Applicatio fi led February 23, 1921 Serial no. 447,267.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that Bnssrn-Man Bonny, citizen of the United States, residing at Marcelino, in the countyofPLinn andtitate of:.Missouri, has invented certainnew and. useful Improvements in CombinedLids and Washdrains for Nashboilers, ofwhich the following is a specification, referencebeing had to the accompanyingdrawings;
This invention relates to combined lid and wash drain for wash boilers, and'has for its object to provide adevice. of this character which maybe d t df 1m for of boiler'to provide a lid.
Another ob ect is to provldexa device of this characterwherein the lid when inverted serves as a drain-receptacle"forthe clothes after they are removed from the boiler. l.
A further object :of'the invention is r to provide a device of this character having an intermediate'dished portion adaptedwhen the lid is invertedt'o receivethe'clothe's, and
to also serve as asteam dome when the lid; is
maintained in its naturalposition.
A still further object of the-invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the dished intermediate portion of the lid serves to properly support the lid when it is used for draining clothes.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character having novel means for draining the same when in its inverted position. F
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the improved construc-. tion and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described and Referring to the drawings, A designates a conventional form of boiler such as used for washing clothes, the boiler having the usual reinforcing bead B.
A lid 5 is provided for use in connection with the boiler, said lid comprising a sheet;
of material 6 having its intermediate porview of a wash sou curved longitudinally of as sheet.
The ends 8 and 9 areextended in angulan relation to theinterniediate portion 7 and are disposed substantially in the same plane and disposed parallel with the upper edge oftheboiler A. By this arrangement, the
ends 8 and '9 provide substantial supports whenthe device, is being used as a lid. It
will benoted that" the intermediate portion is relatively long and thatthe curvature thereof is gradualso that a-,long;and.rather deep dome isprovided The dome is cone pleted by side members 10 andll. Each;
of said side] members having one of their longitudinal edges curved from end to end so as to conform'to. the contour of the intermediate portion; 7.
The ends 8 an'd9are each provided with anarcuate flange 12'whichydepends from the lower surface of saidends'inwlardly of their edges so that these flanges will engage the inner surface offbead B of the boiler at the endof theboiler; to maintain'th'e lid in its proper position; qAsshown in Figure 2 the flan es 12 coact with the'end ortions 8jand 9 to provide spaced individual trays. To assist in retain ng the 11d in engagement is provided with a reinforcing strip- 13. said strip being secured to the inner side of said side member and adapted to depend below flange capable of cooperating Jwith the flanges 12, said flanges being adapted to engage the inner surface of thebase B; Ex-
with the boiler each side member 10 and 11 the edge thereof. to serve as a retaining tendinglongitudinally of the outer surface of the lid inparallel relation to each other, is a pair of braces 14 which extend to the end "portions 8 and 9 and are adapted to brace the intermediate portion 7. Handles 15 are secured to the upper surface of the end portions 8 and 9 and are supported by said braces. i
Each of the sideslO and 11 has the inter mediate portion of its curved longitudinal edge'provided with a seriesof perforations 16, Carriedby the upper surfaceof each of said sides, is a pair of guide members 17 which extend above and below the perforations. These guide members are adapted to slidably support a slidingjvalve 18provided with an operating knob 19, by means of -which the perforations are closed and opened.
. When lid is in the position as shown in Figure 1, the intermediate portion 7 thereof, Where it will be permittedtoescape When desired by operating the valves 18 so that there is no danger of the steam forcing the lid from the boiler in order to escape. the lid 5 is removed and inverted and positioned transversely of the'boiler as shown inFigure :2. I The lid: then serves as a receptacle capable of receiving clothespreviously deposited in the boiler. When in this position the valves 18 maybe opened so as to permit Water removed with the clothes to pass through the perforations 16 back into the boiler. The individual trays provided byinverting the cover are intended to receive ClOtllQS'tllFtt havebeen drained, ifit is not convenient to move the boiler so as to convey the clothes to another place, thereby leaving the intermediate vportlon of the cover for the reception of other clothes to be drained. It will be noted that the intermediate portion of the dome extends inwardly of the boiler so as to prevent the lid from being accidentally disengaged from the bead B When in its inverted position. It will also be noted that theiflanges 12 and 13 serve to increase the depth of the receptacle so P that a large number of clothes may be deposited for draining.
After. the clothes have been. boiled,
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel device which not only serves as a lid but as a drain capable of being readily positioned for use rithe s js eiri a sp fastening means or strips.
Whatggis claimed is}:
1. A Wash boiler cover clothes drain con sisting of a sheet of metal having its central portion curved longitudinally and having its end portions extended outwardly substantially inthe same plane side members carrie'd by theilongitudinal edges of the curved portion of thesheet, said side member'sterminatingat the junction of the end portions With the curved portion of the sheet.
2. A wash boiler cover clothes drain comprising a sheet of metal having its intermediate portion. curved longitudinally, said curved portion terminating inwardly of the endsef the. sheet, the end portions being fiat and extended outwardly in angular relation to the curved portion of the sheet, side members for thesides of said curved portion, eachfside member having one. longitudinaledge curved and connected to one of the longitudinal edges of said curved portion; the. opposite longitudinal edge of each side' meinber. terminatingin the plane of the lower face of said endportions.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix. my
signature.
