To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GoDrRnY R. DAMiANI, a citizen'lof the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful'lmprovement in Door Silencersnof which the following is a full, clear, concise,
and exact description, referencebeing had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication.
My invention relates to door silencers, and has for its principal object the provision of a device of this kind which will effectively eliminate rattling and'other noisesincident drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of those parts of the device which are secured to the door frame;
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on the line 2 2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated byl the arrows; I
Figure 3 is a sectional view of one of the parts of my door silencer, this view being taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4; is a view'in elevation, showing the several parts of .the device in position upon a door and its frame, the door being closed;

In the drawing, 9 indicates a door hung within a door frame 10 and adapted tovabut the usual stop strip 11. Secured to the door by means of the screws 12 is a .pad of rubber or equivalent compressible material 13. rllhe door'frame is recessed at 14 for the reception of a plate 15 of channel shape, having parallel flanges 16 and 17. The plate 15 is secured to the door frame by means of screws 18-18 extending through the apertures 19-19 in the plate. As best shown in Figures 1 and 6, the plate 15 is adapted to pivotally support a pai-r of bell crank levers 20-20 which are mounted on the plate 15 by meansV of rivets 21-21 extending through the portions 22 of the levers 20--20- -The flanges l'and 17 .are provided with studs 24- and 25 and the levers 20-20 are provided with studs 26 and 27. 'Between the studs 24.- and 26 andthe studs 25'and 27 are disposed springs 28-28 tending to force the levers 20-20 toward each other. To limit the movement of the levers 20-20, the plate 15 carries stops 29-29 which vengage the portions 22 of the levers 20-20, as best illustrated in Figure 1. As the door is closed, the resilient pad 13 enters between the Jfaces of the levers 20-20-and the closing of the door is impeded by reason of the vertical pressure exerted on the vpad 13 by the levers 20-20. As indicated in Figure 1, the receiving faces of the levers 20-2O are formed to permit the reception of thev pad 13, and the distance between the receiving faces of the levers is substantially the same Vas the width of the pad 13, so that, when the door isv opened and the pad 13 removed from between the levers 20-20, the levers will have been brought into engagement with the stops 29-29 gradually.
I prefer to have the pad 13 slightly tapered, being narrower at the Aportion of the pad last to leave the engaging faces of lthe levers 20-20 when the door is opened.
This avoids the noise that would result from having the pad 130i a width greater than the distance between the yengaging faces of the levers. i
Mounted in alignment with the stop strip 11, and held to the door frame lO-'by screws 30-30, isa support 31 having. a wall 33.
vExtendingthrough the'aperture 34 of the v 'support`31 is aA guide pin 35'threaded at 36 ,A and having a head 37. The guide pin 35 has threaded enga-gement with and is secured to a slidable plate 38 which carries a rubber or other resilient pad 39. The rubber pad may be secured to the slidable plate 38 by means of screws extendingy through the apertures 40-40. rThe slidable plate 39 carries therewith a pin t1 which is arranged to extend through the slot 42 in the wall 33. A helical compression spring-43 extends between the support 31 and a iiut 44 abutting the slidable plate 38. The pin 35 being slidably mounted in the aperture 340i the support 31, the rubber pad 39 will, therefore' be movable inwardly against the tension of the spring 43. Disposed between the head 37 and the support 31- is a cushioning washer which is intended to permitthe spring 43 to operate the slidable parts without noise.
From the foregoing description, and by reference to the drawings, it will be apparent that, on closing the door, the rubber pad 13 enters between the faces of the levers 20-20- The pressure exerted on the pad 13 or the spring pressed levers checks the travel of the door until the door and pad 13 engage the' yielding pad 39 which moves against the tension of the spring 43 to permit closing of the door. When the door is in closed position, the same is prevented from rattling ing formed to receive between them the resilient pad carried by the door, the distance between the receiving faces of the levers being substantially equal to thewidth of the portion of the pad arranged first to engage the levers, a yielding member comprising a support carried by the frame, a slidable plate provided with' a resilient member, said slidable plate having pin and slot conneccured to the slidable plate, spring means disposed'b-etween the slidable plate and the support, said guide pin provided with a head disposed on the opposite side of the s'ziipport, and a resilient member between the pad Vand the support.
2. ln combination with a door,` a door frame, a silencer comprising a resilient pad attached to the door, a plate attached to the door frame, a pair of levers pivoted to said plate, spring means arranged to move said levers toward each other, said levers being tormed to receive between them the resilient pad carried by the door, the distance between the receiving faces of the levers being substantially equal to the width of the portion of the pad arranged i'irst to engage the levers, a yielding member comprising a support carried by the frame, a slidable plate providedfwith a resilient member, said slidable plate having pin'yand slot connection with the support, a guide pin extending through the base of said support and secured to the slidable plate, spring means disposed between the slidable pla-te and the support, said guide pin provided with a head disposed on the opposite side of the support, a resilient member between the pad and the support. l
3. ln combination with a door, a door frame, a silencer comprising a resilient pad attached to the door, a plate attached to the dooi frame, a pair of levers pivoted to said plate, spring means arranged to move said levers .toward each other, stops toA limit the movement of said levers, said levers being formed to receive between them the resilient pad carried by the door, ithedistance between' the receivingfaces of the levers` being substantially equal to the width of the portion of the pad arranged irst torengage the levers, a yielding member comprising a sup port carried by the frame, a slidable plate, said slidable plate having 'pin andslot connection with the support, aguide pin extending through the base of said support and sel cured to the slidable plate, spring means disposed between the slidable plate and the support, said guide pin provided with a head disposed on the opposite side of the support, and a resilient member between the pad and the support.

In combination with a door, a door frame, a silencer comprising a resilient pad attached to the door, a plate attached to the door frame, a pair of levers pivoted to said plate, spring means arranged to move said levers toward each other, stops to limitA the movement `of said levers, said levers being formed to receive between them the resilient pad carried by the door, the distance between tlie receiving faces of the levers being ,i substantially equal to the width of the portion with the support, a guide pin extending through the base of said support and setion of the pad arranged first to engage the levers, a yielding member comprising a support carried by the frame, a slidab e plate provided with a resilient member, said slidable plate having piir and slot connection with the support, a guide pin extending through thebase of said support and secured to the slidable plate, and spring'means disposed between the slidable plate and the support. r

In combination with a door, a door frame, a silencer comprising .a resilient pad attached to the door, a plate attached to the door lframe, a pair'of levers pivoted to said plate, spring means arranged to move said levers toward each other, said levers being formed to receive between t em the resilient pad carried by the door, a yielding member comprising asupport carried by the frame, av-slidable plate provided with a resilient member, said slidable plate having pin and slot connection with the support, a guide pin extending through the base of said support and secured to the slidable plate, and spring ,Aramees means disposed between the slidable plate and the support, said guide pin provided with4 a head disposed on the opposite side of the support.
6. In combination with a door,. a door frame, a silencer comprising a resilient member, a yieldable member arranged to engage the resilient member, a support on the frame, and a yieldable abutment slidably mounted in said support andlhaving pin and slot connection therewith. e

In combination with a door, a door frame, a silencer comprising a resilient member, a yieldable member arranged to engage the resilient member, a support on theframe, a guide member extending through the support and having attached thereto a slidable member, and spring means between said support and slidable member, said slidable member having a pin extending therefrom and co-operating with a slot in the support.
8. In combination with a door, a door frame, a silencer comprising a. support, a
guide member extending through the sup-' port and having attached thereto a slidable member, and spring means between said sup port and the slidable member, said slidable member having a pin extending therefrom and eo-operating with a slot in the support.
9. A' door silencer comprising a resilient member, a support, a pair of levers pivotally mounted on the support, said levers having broad engagement faces to receive the resilireceive the resilient member, the distance between the receiving faces of the levers being substantially equal to the Width of the resilient member, and spring means adapted yieldingly to present the engaging faces of the levers to the resilient member.
11. A door silencer comprising a resilient member, `a channel-shaped support carried by the frame, a pair of levers pivoted to the support, said levers being provided with broad engagement faces, lugs carried by said levers and the flanges of the channelshaped support, and spring means disposed between the levers and the channel-shaped support and positioned by said lugs yieldingly to present the levers to the resilient member.
