Application iiledAdguSt 31, i920. {Serial No. 407,074.: a I
To all whom it may concern: i Bait-known that I, WILLIAM H; .BRA vs- Ton, a citizen of the UnitedStates, andresiding at 'Brooklynpin thecounty of Kings andState ofllew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inChimneys, of which the following isaspecification,fsuch as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to :make and li se the same. p This invention relates to chimneys and particularly to chimney top structures, and
the object thereof is "to provide an improved device ofthisclass which ispreferably made complete of concrete or similar :Inaterial', and wh ch may be used in the place of, or
as asubstitu'te'for ordinary chimney tops,
built up of bricks or similar material and forming a continuationof or outlet for the fines or chimney struotures in thewalls of houses of various kinds and classes, a fur} ther' ob ect belng to provlde a chimney top structure of the class-described whichmaybe mounted on "or used-in'connection with a plurality of fines orichimney structures arranged side by-sid'e or in closeprox-w imityin the walls-ofbu'ildings; a still fur: ther object beingto provide a structure of the class described which may be used in the manner above set out and 'which'will operate to prevent backdrafts andcause a steady and continuous draft at all times and nder varying weather conditions.
The invention is fully disclosed in the folo lowingspecifi cation, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in whichthe separate parts of my improvement aredesignated by suitable reference i characters each of the views, and in which Fig. l is a central longitudinal vertical section of my improved chimney'or chimney structure; 1 Fig. 2 a top plan'view thereof; Fig. 3 a bottom plan view; and, Fig. 4 a side view thereof. In the practice of my invention I provide a chimney top structure a-of the class specified which is made in the form shown of concrete and preferably integral and is approximately rectangular in form and oblong in cross section, and comprises a bottom or base portion 7) and an enlarged top portion a, the enlargement being in the direction of the narrower sides of the bottom or base portion or in the direction of the greatest portion.v i
, f Said. opening transverse dime @III the top of the chimney top structure is a centralopemngdflhe opposite side-wallsof whichpinfthedirection of ,theigreatestsions of said bottom .orbjase c dimensions of. the bottom orbase portion are curvecl, i11wardly and downwardly as shown vat e insuch manner that-"the bottom f of theropeningld is much sm'aller than the I v.flhe narrower sides -g ofthe top of the chimney top: structure are also inclined downwardly and in the top portion of the narrower sides thereof and just below the top are openings k, the sidewalls of which arein'clined inwardly and downwardly,
Inthe central portion of the'chimney-top structure is *azVehaped transverse body and partition portion c, the sidewalls jof which divide the bottom orl'base portion thereof into two separate side passages 79*,which are narrower'at the top than-at the bottom, and the body portion z'is provided centrally of the top with a raised vane or partition member m which preferably .fexten'ds about two-thirds ofthe' distancelto the top opening; d, and which divides .the v. bottomportion of said opening into separateside passages n,- and openings halso co mmunicat'e with thelpas 1;
sage-ways, the inner. end portions of which are dividediby the: partsiowofathe central member, which open outwardly and laterally to the openings 72 and said central member is provided with a downwardly directed portion which divides the bottom part of the device into two passage-ways which communicate with the opening at the bottom of said device and all of said passage-ways are in communication; and when the chimney top structure is in use the heated gases from the fines pass upwardly through the device in the direction of the arrows w and out through the top side openings h, as indicated may, in the construction thereof, divide said structure horizontally into separate parts, preferably along the dotted line y-zy of Fig. 1 in order to facilitate and cheapen the process of manufacture but, in this event, the separate parts would be cemented together or otherwise.connected so as to make the complete device of substantially integral construction. i a
My invention is not limited to the'exact form or shapes and the comparative dimensions of the various parts thereof, herein shown and describedpand changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and while I have shown and described my improved chimney structure as of approximate- 1y rectangular form in horizontal section,
" my invention is not limited to this exact shape, and the said chimney or chimney structure may be made circular or oval, or of any other desired shape in horizontal sect-IOD. A: t
It will also be understood that while I have described the chimney asbeing prefer-. ably composed of concrete, the same may be composed of, or formed from any desired and suitable material.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A chimney structure of the class de scribed comprising a hollow body portion open at the top and'bottom and at the top of the oppositesides, all/of said openings beingin communication and a transverse division body mounted in the body portion aproximately centrally thereof and adapted to subdivide the communications between the top and bottom openings and said side openings, said transverse division body be ing approximately V-shaped in form. and provided with an upwardly directed vane located centrally of the top opening, and means subdividing the communications between said side openings and, said top opening.
2. A chimney top structure composed of a hollow body portion open at the bottom and provided centrally of the top thereof with an opening and in the top of the opposite sides with other openings, all of which communicate with the interior of said body portion and a central partition member within said body portion and having parts which divide said openings into separate passages.
3. A chimney top structure composed of a hollow body portion open at the bottom and provided centrally of the top thereof with an opening and in the top of the opposite sides with other openings, all of which communicate with the interior of said body portion and a central partition member within said body portion and having parts which divide said openings into separate passages, all of said passages being in communication.
a. A chimney top structure of the class described comprising a hollow body portion open at the top and bottom and the opposite sides of which are also provided at the top with openings, all of said openings com munic ating with the interior of the bodyportion, and a central partition. member h ving upwardly, and laterally and'upwardly directed parts which divide the top and side openings into separate passages, said central partition member being also provided with a part which extends downwardly and divides the bottom opening into separate passages. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing! as my invention 'I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 28th day of August 1920.
