Patented Nov. 28, 1922.A
mareas RUBBER HEEL.
Application filed July 13, 1922.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, JAMES MoGr-n, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Rubber Heel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rubber or cushion heels. The rimary object of the invent ion is to provi e novel means for increasing the cushion effect of the heel, by providing an air chamber within the heel.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for securing the heel to the shoe, the means including a novel form of washer adapted to overlie the cavity formed in the rubber heel to insure against the heel becoming displaced from the shoe or boot to which the same is secured.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and 1n the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the shoe engaging portion of a heel constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 3. n
Figure 3 is va vertical sectional view through a heel.
Figure 4i is a perspective view of the securing plate.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates a rubber heel, the shoe engaging surface thereof being formed with a cavity 6 which is preferably circular in formation.
The cut out portion or cavity 6 is formed in such amanner as to define the rib 7 and a transverse rib 8, which ribs being formed integral with the walls of the cavity, strengthen the walls of the cavity to permit the heel to -flex at points adjacent to the cavity, but at the same time, prevent breaking or tearing of the rubber at this point.
Serial N0. 5 74 ,662.
,Y The rib 7 is formed with a recessed portion 9 which is preferably rectangular in formation, which recessed portion is of a size to accommodate the securing plate 10 that is formed with a central threaded portion 11 and nail openings 12. n
Embedded in the body portion of the heel at a point in proximity to the ground engaging portion thereof or tread of the wheel, is a washer 13, which embodies arms 14, the central portion of the washer being provided with an opening to accommodate a securing bolt. The heel is formed with a re cessed portion 15 disposed substantially centrally thereof, which recessed portion provides a clearance for the head 16 of the securing bolt 17.
The securing plate 10 in use, is nailed to the heel portion of a shoe, as clearly shown by Figure 3 of the drawing. The heel proper is now positioned on the heel portion of the sole of a shoe, the recessed portion 9 being fitted over the securing plate 10.
The securing bolt 17 is now positioned in the opening of the washer, 13, the threaded portion of the bolt being positioned inthe threaded opening 11 of the securing plate and moved to a. position to draw the heel into close engagement with the heel portion of the sole of the shoe.
Thus it will be seen that due to the cavity 6, the rubber heel will be exceptionally resilient, relieving the person wearing the shoe provided with a rubber heel of this character, of sudden jars incident to the heel contacting with hard surfaces.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l 1. A cushion heel including a body portion formed of elastic material, the body portion being formed with a central cavity constructed to provide ribs, one of said ribs having a cut out portion, a securing plate formed with a central threaded opening, a washer embedded in the body portion, a securing bolt extending through the washer and having its threaded portion positioned in the threaded opening of the securing plate, and means for securing the securing plate 'to the sole of a shoe.
2. A cushion heel including a body portion formed of elastic material, said body gagging the securing holt to prevent the se- 10 curing bolt from tearing the body portion.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto ziflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
