IMPROVEMENT IN SCRUBBING-BRUSHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,695, dated October 14, 1873; application filed September 9, 1873.

To allwhom t may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL HEEOLD, of Pitts burg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Improvement in scrubbing-Brushes, of which the following is a speciiication:

The nature of my invention consists in com bining, with an ordinary scrubbing-brush, a reservoir for containing water or suds, which gradually flows out and supplies the brush for a considerable length of time.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved scrubbing-brush. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of a modified form of reser- Voir.

The same letters of reference are used in all the figures in designating identical parts.

The brush A may be of any approved form and construction of hand scrubbing-brushes. Its head A' `carries the reservoir B, which can be made of any suitable material, (tin being preferred,) and of any required capacity. The reservoir shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is simply an inverted dish-like vessel, the rim of which is secured water-tight to the edge of the head of the brush, which thus forms the bottom of the reservoir. The water or suds .is introduced through the hole b in the top of the reservoir,

and ows out to supply the brush through a contracted hole, a, in the head A', the Vhole thereinbeing contracted to effect a slow outflow, which may be entirely stopped at any time by placing a linger over the hole b.

In some cases the hole b may be provided with a valve, B1, as shown in Fig. 3.

There it is desired to supply brushes already in the market or in use with a fountain or reservoir, the latter may be made with a-bottom, B2, so that it can be set loosely on the brush= head Without requiring the making of a tight joint therewith.

I am aware that the application of a fountain or reservoir to brushes, especially shoebrushes, is not new, and do not, therefore, pro pose to claim this idea, broadly.

In adapting it to scrubbing-binslles I have found it to be essential to provide the reservoir with an air-inlet, imder the constant and ready control ofv the hand that manipulates the brush; and in this particular it is distinguished from all fountain-brushes now known.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent, is

As a new article of manufacture, the hereindescribed fountain scrubbing-brush, the reservoir B of which is provided with an inlet-hole, b, luider the convenient control of the hand manipulating the brush, substantially as spec ied.
