Be it known that I, Emvs'r ZnscHMAn, a former subject of the Emperor of Germany, who have declared my intentions'ot becoming a citizen of the United States, am a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of lllinois', and have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in Match Boxes, of which the following is a speciiication.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in match boxes, and has for its object the provision of a match box which will be simple in'structure, economic in man ufacture7 and highly` ellicient in use.4

Another object is the provision in a match box of means :tor discharging the matchesj contained within the match box, individually.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. v y

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying `drawings forming a part of this specification, and in` which,

The approved form of construction comprises a hollow rectangular match container 4:. The container is constructed from a single piece of. metal which is bent or swaged so as to form three sides of the container. Secured to the side walls of the container is a suitable back 26. The back wall 26 may be secured to the remainder of the container in any suitable manner7 such as by the usc ot bolts or rivets employed in conjunction with brackets. The side walls of the'mcmbcr Llf are provided adjacent their upper rear corner with an opening 5. The opening 5 is 'formed by punching a hole in the side wall and at the same time cutting a slit'which extends to the upper edge of the side walls. The upper edge oil the portion 8 projects through an eye formed adjacent the end of a downwardly turned. portion 7 of a cover 6.

Mounted upon the t'ront wall of the member 4f is a downwardly inclined shelf 9. Mounted upon the rear wall 26 is a downwardly inclined shelf 10. As shown in Fig.

1, the front wall oit the container d, at its lower edge, is provided with a notch 11, which is formed by pressing a portion oi the metal inwardly to form the inwardly projecting tongue 12. Projecting through the side walls of the member .4t and journaled therein is a shaft 18 upon which is pivotally mounted a tray le. rl`he tray 14 is provided, preferably formed by swaging, with a raised portion 15, which is adapted to seat in the slotll, when in one position. The member 141 at its rear end is provided with a slot 16 formed by punching a tongue out of the metal thereby leaving the rear portion of the member 14 bifurcated. The bifurcated portion of the member 14, at its extreme end, is curled to form knuckles 13 through which the member 13 projects7 thereby rotatably mounting the member 14 upon the member 18.

The portion of the member 14 which is punched out to form the member 16 is utilized to form a feeding andr agitating member.l This member serves to discharge the matches from the match box individually and also serves to agitate the matches contained within the match box, so that matches will `always be present at the discharge opening.

The tongue which is punched out of the member 14- is :bent upwardly to form a yoke or U-shaped member. @ne leg ofthe U-shaped member is bent to form a semi-circular 'portion 17. The bight 18 of the U-shaped member is inclined relatively to thelegs, the purpose of which will be explained hereinafter.v The `free leg 1.9 of the U-shaped portion projects below the member l0 in a recess or notch 20 provided therein. As shown in Fig. 3 the member 10 terminates approximately on the central line of thev bight 18. Mounted upon the shaft 13 is a torsional spring 21, one end 22 of which engages against one of the bifurcat'ed portions of the member 14, the other end 23 of which projects through an opening 211 provided in the member 267 and is clenched therein. The opening 24k is provided adjacent the lower end of the member 26 and an additional opening 25 is provided adjacent the upper end ofthe member 26. rFliese openings are constructed in the shape of a keyhole with the large rounded portion at the bottom, so that the device may be hung upon the wall by inserting the head of a nail 27 through the rounded enlarged portion and allowing the JOQX t0 move downwardly until the nail;

27 engages in the narrowed or neck portion of the opening. A base 28, which is preferably formed from cast iron is secured to the container beneath the bottom member 14. T his member 28 is secured to the match container by any suitable means such as bolts 29. The base 28 is provided with a dish portion 30 which forms a receptacle for the used or burnt matches. T he member 30 is provided with a corrugated portion 31, which may be utilized for striking matches on.

1n operation, the container is filled with matches 32. The matches are directed toward the U shaped member by means of the inclined members 9 and 10. As shown in Fig 2, a passage is provided between the U member and the front wall of the container. At the base of thisl passage, the semi-circular portion 17 is present when the member 111 serves as a closure for the discharge opening. The'member 12 directs the match which passes down the passage into the semi-circular recess which formed by the portion 17. Upon the downward movement of the member 14, the match contained within the semi-circular recess is afforded clearance, so as to be permitted to pass below the inclined member 12. When the match clears the member 12, it is then permitted to roll down the inclined tray or closure 14. The eXtreme end 14,-l of the member la is curled lupwardly so as to form a stop for the match andl also so as to afford a convenient portion for moving the `member 14: downwardly. At the time the match clears the member 12, the leg of the U which is a continuance of the portionA 17 contacts with the member 12 and prevents any of the other matches in4 the passage from moving downward and out of the discharge opening.

It is thus seen that the opening through which the matches are discharged is closed simultaneously with the 'discharge of a match. It is also apparent that but a single match may be discharged at a time. When the member 14 is moved downwardly its maximum distance, the bight 1S lies in the same plane as the member 10, and its upper surface lies flush with the upper surface of the member 10. This is due to inclining the bight, as already mentioned. It is, therefore, evident that the matches resting upon the member 10 will have a tend-4 ency to move downwardly so as to cover the. bight 18. The torsional spring is ntil-` ized for the purpose of restoring the member 1114 to closing position. As the U shaped` member moves upwardly, the matches contained within the container are agitated and adjusted, and thus the` matches which lie upon the member 18 are `directed toward the `passage which. isf formed between the U l. shaped member and the front wall of the i container. It is thus seen that I have provided a match box which prevents the obtaining of more than one match at a time and at the same time agitates or adjusts the remaining matches, and assures the discharge of all matches contained within the container through the discharge opening, inasmuch as the parts within the container are .arranged to direct the matches toward the discharge opening.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred fo-rm of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within 'the scope of the appended claims.

2. A match boX comprising a match container, having a discharge opening; an inclined shelf on the rear wall on said container for directing the matches towards said opening; an inclined shelf on the front wall for directing the matches towards said first mentioned shelf; means for closing said opening; and a U-shaped means mounted on an intermediate portion of said closing means and containing a recess for discharging said matches through said opening, substantially as described.

3. A match box comprising a match container, having a rigid front wall and a discharge opening therein; directing means mounted on the rear wall and extending adjacent to the front opening; an inclined bottom pivotally mounted in said container; and a recessed yoke mounted on said bottom movable between said front wall and said directing means adapted to hold a match in said recess fory immediate discharge, and a successive row of matches between said yoke and Vfront wall, and to agitate and adjust the remaining matches in said container, substantially as described.

Amatch box comprising a match con# tainer, having a rigid wall anda discharge opening therein; an inwardly directed vmatically closing said flange on said wall adjacent said opening; a pivotally mounted bottom in said container; a curved tongue mounted on said bottom for adjusting matches in said container, said tongue having a semi-circular portion cooperating with said flange for receiving` and discharging individually through said opening the matches adjusted by said tongue; and spring means mounted on the pivotal mounting` oi said bo-ttom and cooperating with said bottom for autodiscl'iarge opening; substantially as described.

5. A match box comprising a front and rear wall, and a match container therebetween; an inwardly extending ange on said *front wall and a discharge opening beneath the same; means above said flange for directing matches rearwardly; guide means beneath said means for directing matches forwardly; a pivoted bottom for closing said opening; a yoke-shaped portion integral with said bottom adapted to enter an opening between said iiange and said guide means for adjusting said matches; a curved portion in said with said yoke, said flange; and said front wall for discharging said matches individually; and spring means connected with said rear wall and said bottom for auto matically closing said opening and actuating said match adjusting means, substantially as described.
