This invention relates to certainnew'and useful improvements in row locks and has particular reference to a row lockembodying a universal joint for supporting an oar above the gunwales of the boat. a
i The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a row lockembodying a universal joint, a part of which joint "is permanently connected to the oar, whi-lethe remaining portion of the joint is carried by the gunwale of the boat.
Theinvention further includes in arow the face plate 2 carries-a pairof perpenlock of the typeabove setforth, a pivotally mounted bracket arm constitutinga portion of the universal joint of the row lock with means fonholding'the bracket arm in the position for properly supporting the remaining-portion of: the universal joint.

Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated a .row lock embodying a mounting base frame 1 adapted to be suitably secured to the gunwale of a boat, having a face plate 2 suitably secured to the upper face thereofsupportring the row lock mechanism.
As shown more clearly in Figs. 1, 2 and 7,

An upwardly extending curved bracket arm'7 is carried by a normally horizontal leg 8 that is preferably formed integral therewith, the forward end of the leg 8 and the lower end of the curved bracket arm 7 at their angle connection being guided between the blocks 3. The outer end of the leg-8 is pivotally mounted on the pin 9 extending between the blocks 41 and 5. while the terminalouter end of said leg is curved asat 10, shown in Fig. 1, to permit pivotal movement on said pin 9. i r
As shown more clearly in Fig. 1, a universal joint supporting an. car 11 is associated with the face plate 2 and the upperend of the curved bracket arm 7, a strap bearing 12 havinga. bolt 13 journaled transversely thereof that freelyexten'ds through an openmg in the oar-11 to permit free pivotal movement of the'oar'on said bolt. The lower side of the strap bearing 1.2carries a pin ll that is freely rotatable in a socket bearing 15 formed. in the adjacent end otthe face plate 2,apin 16 carried by the upper side or" the strap hearing 12 being associated with theupper end of the curved bracket arm 7. The :free end of the bracket arm 7 is provided with a threaded perpendicular bore within which a screw plug17 is adjustably mounted, said plug having a socket in the lower side thereof for receiving the bearing pin 16 upon the upper side of the strap bearing, said screw block 17 being adjustable in the threaded bore by the finger ring 18 and maintained in adjusted position by the set nut 19. With the strap bearing 12 positioned as illustrated by full lines in Fig. 1, the same is permitted to move on a vertical axis, while the bolt 13 extending transversely of the strap bearing provides free vertical movement of the oar 11 during the swinging-or rowing motion thereof.
i A locking and shifting device for the leg 8 and curved bracket arm 7 carried thereby is provided, and includes a perpendicular stub shaft 20 carried by the faceplate 2 adjacent the blocks 3, upon which asleeve 21 formedintegral with and depending from a locking lever 22 is received, the locking lever 22 being pivotally mounted upon the shaft 20 and locked thereon against accidental disengagement by the screw device 23 shown more clearly in Fig. 6. The upper inner end of the locking lever 22 carries an angularly directed foot 24 having a beveled side face 25 adapted for engagement with the beveled edge 26 formed on the upper face of the leg 8 adjacent the sleeve bearing 20 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5. As shown more clearly in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, the lower end of the sleeve 21 carries an extension foot 27 having a beveled side face 28 that is adapted for engaging the beveled lower side edge 29 of the leg 8, while a block 30 depending from said'locking lever 22 is adapted for engagement with the leg 8 to permit the closing movement thereof. Fig. 3 of the drawings shows a locking lever 22 detached from the row lock and illustrates the bottom face thereof, showing the angular feet extensions '24 and 27 and the stop block 30. To retain the lever 22 in its locked position, a latch device embodying a head'31 has the shank 32 thereof extending through an opening in the outer end of said locking lever, a flat spring 33 fixed at one end as at 34 to the bottom face of said lever hasthe free end thereof secured as at 35 to the lower side of the shank 32 of said knob. A latch lug 36 depends from the shank of said knob and is adapted for engagement with the keeper latch lug 6 upon the block 5 as clearly shown in Fig. 7. In the operation of the device, assuming that the row lock mechanism as in the full line position shown in Fig. 1, and it being desired to remove the strap bearing 12 and car 11 therefrom,
the knob 21 is elevated against the tension of the spring 33 to disengage the latch lugs 6 and 36 to permit springing movement of the locking lever 22 upon the stub shaft 20.
During this movement, the foot 27 presents the beveled edge 28 thereof for engagement with the beveled edge 29 upon the lower side of the leg 8, the foot 27 riding beneath ,bearing socket in the screw plug 17. In
the reverse operation of the device, the foot 27 is displaced from engagement with the beveled wall 29 of said leg, and the foot 24 carried adjacent the upper end of said sleeve 21 presents the beveled edge 25 thereof for engagement with the beveled edge 26 at the upper side of said leg, thereby depressing the leg and lowering the upper end of the curved bracket arm 7, while the latch device at the outer end of the locking lever cooperating with the keeper lug .6 upon the block 5 retains the lever 22 in its locked position.
From the above detail description, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, and while there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes, may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as claimed.
What is claimed as new is 1. In row lock mechanism, a mountin member, a horizontal leg pivoted thereto,,a vertically extending curved bracket arm carried by the free end of said pivoted leg, a universal joint connection for an oar disposed between the mounting plate and the free end of the curved bracket arm, and means for shifting the bracket arm to disconnect the universal joint.
2. In row lock mechanism, a mounting member, a horizontal leg pivoted thereto, a vertically extending curved bracket arm carried by the free end of said pivoted leg, a universal joint connection for an oar disposed between the mounting plate and the free end of the curved bracket arm, and a locking lever pivotally mounted on the mounting member and cooperating with the leg for raising and lowering the curved bracket arm during reverse pivotal movement thereof. 7
3. In row lock mechanism, a mounting member, a horizontal leg pivoted thereto, a vertically extending curved bracketarm carried by the free end of said pivoted leg, a universal joint connection for an. oar disposed between the mounting plate and the free end of the curved bracket arm, and a locking lever pivotally mounted on the mounting member and cooperating with the leg for raising and lowering the curved bracket arm during reverse pivotal movement thereof, said locking lever carrying extensions at the upper and lower sides thereof for engaging said legs to effect movement thereof.
In a row lock mechanism, a mounting member, a horizontal leg pivoted thereto, a vertically extending curved bracket arm carried by the 'free end of said pivoted leg, a universal point connection for an oar disposed between the mounting plate and the free end of the curved bracket arm, a look ing lever pivotally mounted on the mounting member and cooperating with the leg for raising and lowering the curved bracket arm during reverse pivotal movement there of, said locking lever carrying extensions at the upper and lower sides thereof for engaging said legs to effect movement thereof, and cooperating means carried by the looking lever and mounting member for holding the lever in its locked position.
5. In row lock mechanism, a mounting member, a normally horizontally disposed leg pivotally mounted thereon, an upwardly extending curved bracket arm carried by the free end of said leg, a universal joint connection for an oar disposed between the mounting member and the upper free end of the bracket arm, a locking lever pivoted on the mounting member, extensions carried by the upper and lower edges of the looking member and said leg having beveled edges at the upper and lower sides thereof adapted to be engaged by said locking lever extensions for shifting the legs to raise and lower the upper free end of the curved bracket arm with respect to the universal joint.

In row lock mechanism, a mounting member, a normally horizontally disposed leg pivotally mounted thereon, an upwardly extending curved bracket arm carried by the free end of said leg, a universal joint connection for an oar disposed between the mounting member and the upper free end of the bracket arm, a locking lever pivoted on the mounting member, extensions carried by the upper and lower edges of the locking member and said leg having beveled edges at the upper and lower sides thereof adapted to be engaged by said locking lever extensions for shifting the legs to raise and lower the upper free end of the curved bracket arm with respect to the universal joint, and alock carried by the locking lever adapted to engage said leg for limiting the closing movement of the locking lever.
7. In a row lock mechanism, a mounting member, a normally horizontally disposed leg pivotally mounted thereon, an upwardly extending curved bracket arm carried by the free end of said leg, a universal joint connection for an oar disposed between the mounting member and the upper free end of the bracket arm, a locking lever pivoted on the mounting member, extensions carried by the upper and lower edges of the locking member and said leg having beveled edges at the upper and lower sides thereof adapted to be engaged by said locking lever extensions for shifting the legs to raise and lower the upper free end of the curved bracket arm with respect to the universal joint, a lock carried by the locking lever adapted to engage said leg for limiting the closing movement of the locking lever, and a tensioned latch device carried by the locking lever adapted for cooperation with the mounting member for holding the lever in locked position.
