UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
AZEL II. BELL, OF CEDAR FALLS, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-HOLDER WElGHlNG-SCALES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,658, dated October 14, 1873 application filed February 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. H. BELL, of Cedar Falls, in the county of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bag-Holder and Scales; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my invention with bag removed. Fig. 2 is a view ndth bag attached.
My invention relates to a combined scale and bag-holder; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the arms which support the bag and their arrangement with. relation to the weighing apparatus; also the construction and arrangement of the parts whereby they constitute a platformscalc when. not in use as a bag-holder; all as hereinafter particularly described.
In the drawing, A represents a table or stand, consisting of four legs and one side brace and two end braces. In the center of the upper sides of the end braces are standards a, in which are holes which serve as bearings for the knife-edges of the scale-beam. B is a metallic bar, which is bent so as to form three sides of a square. Attached to one of the ends and extending backward parallel therewith, is the scale-beam O, which is graduated in the usual nianner and provided with the ordinary sliding and hanging poises. Both ends of the bar Bare provided with knife-edges, which engage with the holes in the standards a. D is a bar, which is bent in the same form as the bar B, but is somewhat longer, and serves as a brace and support for the top or platform E. Attached to the inner sides of the bar D,
near its ends, are the upper ends of two bars, G, at the lower ends of which is a board, H, which supports the bottom of the bag. Near the upper ends of the bars G are holes which engage with knife-edges on the inner sides of the bar B, thus connecting the bag-holding devices with the scale-beam. Attached to the under side of the platform E are two bars, I, with grooves formed in their outer edges and thin bars or strips J pivoted at their inner ends. The mouth of the bag is hung on the bars I, so that a portion of the cloth hangs over on each side, so as to be forced into the grooves and held by the bars J. hen the bag-holding devices are used, the platform E is turned up on. its hinges, as shown in Fig. 2, and held by a brace, 0; but when they are not in use the platform is turned down, as in Fig. 1, and the apparatus serves as a platfornr scale.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a bag-holder, the grooved bars I and pivoted bars J, attached to the platform E, for holding the mouth of the bag, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination and arrangement of the platform E, bars 13 D, and scale-beam 0, substantially as shown and described.
3. A platform-scale, having its platform E hinged to revolve up ard, forming the sup porting-arm of a bag-holder, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
AZEL II. BELL.
