Application filed May 3, v1919, Serial `No. 294,545.`
To @ZZ wim/m. t 77mg/ concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Pnnsfron BEALL, a citizen. ofthe United States,.re siding at'Stevenson, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
rllhe present invention relates to `improvements in power jacks.
An important object of the invention is to improve the construction of the apparatus in general, with a view of rendering same more convenient in use, strong and durable.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the power ac J F igure 2 is a plan view of the same,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the bearing, and,
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional View taken on line 5 5 of Figure 1.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral l0 designates Side frame members, which are preferably formed of a rchannel iron bar. Each member 10 embodies a horizontal base 11, a forward upstanding end 12 and a rear upstanding end 13. The end 13 has connection with an upper horizontal portion 14, secured to the lower end of a forward inclined portion 15, also secured to the portion 12.
The ends 12 are connected by transverse diagonal bars 16, and the rear ends of the members l1 and 14 are connected by transverse diagonal braces or bars 17, as shown.
The numeral 18 designates a transverse power distributing shaft, which is journaled within bearings 19, arranged upon the horizontal portions 14, at their forward ends, and at the rear lower ends'of the inclined portions 15. Each bearing 19 embodies a. thrust member 20, carried by a base 21. rllhis base lits in the channel of the portion 14, and is secured therein by bolts 22. Each bearing further comprises a coacting memlows Renewed June 27, 1922. Serial No. 571,280.
ber `23, secured to the thrust member 20, by bolts 24 or the like. Particular attention is called `to the` fact that the members 20 and 23 are inclined from the perpendicular and have their longitudinal axes perpendicular to the inclined portion 15.
The numeral 25 designates drive pulleys, rigidly secured to the ends of the shaft 18, and adapted to engage with the rear wheels 26 of the automobile, carried by the axle` 27. A driven pulley 29 is rigidly secured to the shaft 18, and
is adapted to be engaged by a belt 30, engaging the pulley or like device to be operated. A second driven pulley 31 `may be secured to one end of the shaft 18, if desired.
The numeral 32 designates lifting elements or tines, which are suitably shaped in cross section to lit in the channels of the inclined portions 15, at theirupper ends. These elements or tines are rigidly secured to the portions 15 by bolts 33 or the like, the heads of which are preferably counter'- sunk. The lifting elements or tines extend forwardly beyond the portions 15 for a substantial distance, and their free ends 34, are preferably slightly upturned.
The operation of the apparatus is as fol- The frame is brought in proximity to the rear axle 27, and the lifting elements or tines 32 have their upturned ends inserted beneath the axle. l The rear end ofthe apparatus is now elevated, and when ysuch rear end is depressed, the frame turns on the forwardends of the elements 11. p This serves to raise the wheels 26 from contact with the ground, and the axle 27 slides down the inclined portions 15, until the wheels 26 contact with the drive pulleys 25. The rear wheels 26 are now set into action, and serve to drive the pulley 29.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to without departing fromthe spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In apparatus of the kind described, a frame including spaced side members each constructed of asingle length of bar metal of channel iron cross section with the flanges los outwardly disposed, said bar metal being formed to provide a horizontal base portion, bent vertically upward to provide a front end portion, bent downward from the top or the end portion at an acute angle to said end portion, bent at an obtuse angle to the last portion to lie horizontally and parallel to the base, bent downward and then rearward to provide a rear end portion and foot, the latter resting on the rear end of the base portion and secured thereto, in combination with a pair of bearings each having a base wedge shaped to fit tightly In testimony whereof I aix my signature. 2.5
