To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANA L. STEARNS, residing at Martelle, in the county of Jones and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Vehicle Jack and Lifter, of which the ollowing is a specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improved construction of supporting means for ifting and sustaining motor vehicles and 1t primarily has for its object to provide an apparatus of this character of a simple, eco-' nominal and durable "construction and particularl designed so that under one adjustment t ereofthe vehicle can travel over it and under another adjustment it effectively raises the vehiclebodily and jacks it to hold it supported by its axles resting thereon and in position for conveniently lubricating the bearings, making re airs and for other purposes and also in suc manner that the vehicle can be readily moved about in thegarage or other places of stora e.
With other objects 1n view that will be hereinafter fully explained In invention comprehends a suitable portable base or frame, lifting means mounted thereon, foldable down against the base under one adjustment, vertically movable to engage the under side of the vehicle axles or body and'devices that cooperate with the frame and the lifting means for uniforml raising and lowering the iaid means, operab e by a single crank mem- In its more complete nature, my invention consists in certain details of construction and novel arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, specificall )ointed out in the aplustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1., is a top plan view of my invention the lifter beams being in their elevated positions. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section thereof, the parts being as in Fig. 1, and horizontal axles and wheels of a motor vehicle bein shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3, is a 'sim' ar view, the lifter beams being at their lowermost position and the pinion conve ing frame being lowered, to allow the vehic e to pass. Fig. 4, is an enlarged longitudinal section of the crank gear and adjusting screw sleeve and rod. Fig. 5, is an enlarged detail perspective view of an end of the pinion carrying support and its latching means. 6, is a perspective view of one toggle connection for the lifter beams. Inthe practical construction, my invention com rises a main frame 4 preferably of rectan u ar shape and which may be of hard wood ut is preferably of angle iron as shown, it having a suitable number of caster Wheels 13, secured on the under side. so the frame with the ob'ect supported thereon may be easily move about the garage.
Upon the upper side of the side bars 4040 of t 1e, frame 4 are secured brackets 3-3 arranged in sets, four sets being shown, in each set of which are mounted the pivot intles 30 on the lower ends of the toggle egs 12 12 that cooperate. with mates 12 that are ivotally connected at the inner ends to the egs 12 by the joint pins 55 and whose outer and lower ends have stud bolts 2, each of which carries a friction roller 18, as clearl shown in Figs. 2 and 6, by reference to whic it will be also noticed that the legs 12 of each set of tog le legs are joined by a rod 6, the ends of which join with the bolts 2, the forward set of bolts 2 also forming the connectin means for the inner ends of an A-shaped pu 1 frame 7 that has a forwardly projected central pull rod 8 for the purposes presently explained.

So far as described, it is apparent that when the beams are at their lowermost position they lie liatwise on the base frame 4 andthe latter being on the floor, as it were,
the vehicle can readily be driven over the frame and the beams being in the position shown in Fi 3, and when in such posltion the front and rear axles of the vehicle will be transversely over the beams 11 and the latter can be lifted together and uniformly by pulling the rod 8 in the direction indicated by the arrow :13, it being understood the beams11 will engage the axles and raise' them as they. are further lifted by suitable force.
For conveniently, quickly and eflectlvely moving the rod 8 forwardly and backwardly and at the same time provide for holding it to its longitudinally adjusted positions, I employ the means best shown in Fig. 4, by reference to which it will be seen the thrcar ed end of rod 8 engages a long internally threaded sleeve 10 integrally or otherwise fixedly formed on the back of the large cog wheel 14 that also has a shoulder 22 for engaging the bearing block that rises from a casting 9 bolted to the front cross member {12 of the frame 4 and in which the sleeve 10 is rotatably mounted.
Coactmg with the cog wheel'14 is a smaller cog gear 16 journaled in a bearing 17 formed on the upper end of an arched support 17 ivotally connected at the lower end as at 17 -17 to the frame 4, such connection being provided so that the wheel 16 and the support can be swun down as indicated in Fig. 3, that the wheei lo and the arched member 17 will be cut of the way and not interfere with a low body motor vehicle in driving the same over the elevating and supporting apparatus.
Wheel 16 has a crank handle 15 for turn" ing it and the frame 17 has a latch member 17 for holding it to its elevated position which is tripped when it is desired to lower the arch 17 and the wheel 16.

From the foregoing, taken in connection wlth the accompanying drawings the complete construction, the operation and the advantages of my invention will be readily ap parent.
It will be understood that the beams when down, he fiat on the bottom frame 4 and thus make it convenient to drive the machine over the beams, and when the axles are over the beams 1-1, the latter, by simply turnng the crank 15, the gears 16 and 14 being 1n mesh, extend the toggle levers vertically whlch raises the beams 1-1 to en age the underside of the vehicle axles, w ich are acked up as it were, by a uniform movement of t e beams under a screw feed and are held to their adjustment without the necessity of providing special means for bolding the beams locked to their different positions.
By using m apparatus the motor vehicle can be held e evated when not in use, with 1ts wheels off the ground and thus save the wear and strain on the tires, incident in havmg the weight of the machine thereon when standing in the garage and further, by holding the vehicle in the manner stated it can be moved around sidewise and endwise to admit of easy access to all the parts and the convenient oihng, cleaning or adjusting thereof, it being understood that the operation of raising, lowering and locking the beams to their adjustments is effected by the turning of the crank 15 as the screw feed devices shown and described cilects the movement and locking of the beams.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. The combination with a portable frame, of two or more sets of oppositely disposed toggle levers at each side of the frame, each set of levers having the free end of one member pivotally connected to the frame and the free end of the other member slidable on the frame, the slidable members at each side being linked together, a lifting beam mounted on the toggle joints of each set of levers at each side, and a means mounted on themain frame connected with the toggle levers for extending or contracting the toggle levers and locking them to their adjusted positions.
2. The combination with a ortable frame; of two or more sets of opposite y disposed toggle levers, at each side of the frame, each set of levers having the free end of one member pivotally connected to the frame and the free end of the other member slidable on the frame, the slidable members of each side being linked together, a lifting beam adjustably mounted on the toggle joints of each set of levers at each side'and a means mounted on the main frame connected with the tog le t e levers for extending and contracting toggle levers and locking them to their adjusted positions.
3. An apparatus of the character described, comprising in combination with a portable platform, disposed sets of toggle levers, a lifter beam mounted on the fulcrums of the said toggle levers, one leverof each set of tog le levers being pivotally secured to the plat orm, the corresponding end of the other toggle lever bein slidable on the platform, means for coup ing the slidable members of the toggle levers, a rod for shifting the said lever connecting members and another meansfifor pulling the said rod backward and forward and locking the same to its adjusted positions.

In an apparatus of the character. described, the combination with the base frame, of toggle levers mounted on the base frame in oppositely disposed pairs, lifter beams mounted on the fulcrums of the toggle levers, means for extending and contracting the toggle levers, said means including a pull rod havin a threaded end, an internally threaded s eeve rotatably mounted on one end of the main frame and adapted to receive the threaded end of the pull rod, and means for rotating the sleeve.
