DUST CAP.
.application le .april 13, 1920, `Serial No.` 373,539. Renewed April 23, EQ2; Serial No. 557,175. i
To ZZ 107101 it may concern.'
Be it known that l, ll/.lAxIMILniN CHARLES A y A Q Scrrwrrnnirr, a c en or the United States of America, resitiing in borough oit Manhattan, city., county, and State ot New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Dust Caps, oi which the following` is a specification.
This invention relates to dust caps 'for tire valves, and aims to provide certain improvements therein.
ln the application of: Henry l). Krait, filed September 20, V1.919Serial No. 325,097, there is shown and described a quick acting dust cap adapted to be slipped over the valve stem and turned slightly to bringv into action a clamping' device which is therein shown in the :form ot a circular member or ring with means for shortening it circumferen: tially to cause it to engage the valve casing and in his application tiled July i?, 191.9, Serial No. 311,459, thereisshown and described a quicirL acting dust cap adapted to be slipped over the valve stem and yieldingly engage the threads thereof to rictionally hold the cap thereon. According to the present invention l provide a dust cap embodying the combination of these two types of dust caps and therefore possesses the ad-l vantages of each and the advantages resulting from their cooperation.
Referring' to the drawings, which illustrate one -form ot the invention,-
Figure l is an elevation of the cap coinplete.
Fig. 2 is a dianietrical section on an en larged scale showing the cap applied to a tire valve.
Fig. 3 is a similar section of the 'foot portion detached from the tire valve.
Fig. l is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the clamp released.
F ig. 5 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 1.
F 6 is an elevation oit the cap portion removed. t
Fig'. 7 is a cross-section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 2.
F ig'. 8 is a cross section on the line 8-8 in Fig. 2.
Fig'. 9 is an underside view oit Fig'. 6.
Referring to the drawings. let A indicate the cap as a whole which is shown as a dust cap for tire valves, although the invention may be applied to other articles, it desired` B indicates the cap portion and C the foot portion, which as shown are threaded tof ether at l). Between the two yis located a clamping rino? F which may be formed in one or more pieces, that shown being); formed intwo pieces (see Fig. 8). rlhe toot portion is preferably provided with a tapered suria'ce (i, on which the clampingy ring rests. and the cap portion is preferably provided with surrounding .surface H, so that when the cap portion is screwed downwardly, the ring contracted circumt'erentially and binds the threads ot the valve casing. To prevent the ioot portion from turning, it is best formed with flats I (see Fig. 5).
As thus tar described, the cap is essentially tliat shown in the application ot Kraft before referred to.
rccording to the present invention I provide means for holding' the cap in place, irrespective of the operation of the clamping member. Such means may be variously constructed, but l prefer that shown, wherein there is provided a spring` ring1 J (see Fig. 7), the ends of which are turned inwardly, as shown at K K, so that they engage between t-he threads. The construction is such that the ends K K will pass over the threads if sulicient iorce is applied in either direction, so that the cap may be slid int-o position on the valve, or removed therefrom. rlhe ring` d", however, has sufficient hold upon the valve to prevent accidental displacement.
Preferably the ring` J is held in a recess L formed in the lower part of the cap member above vthe flange H. A portion of this flange is cut away, as shown at M (Figs. G and 9), so as to permit the ends K K to be bent inwardly ior engagement with the threads of the valve.
In the use of the cap, the latter is slid down over the valve casing, and when the rim nut is reached, the cap portion is rotated relatively to the foot portion, thus operating' the clamping` ring and positively holding` the cap on the valve casing. Should the user, however, neglect to turn the cap after the same is placed upon the valve, the frictional catch member will hold the cap onvsuiiiciently to prevent its loss.
The invention is applicable to other devices than dust caps, where it is desired to tasten cap or similar member onto a projecting; part.
`While l have shown and described one form ot the invention, it will be understood that do not wish to be limited thereto, since various changes may be made therein Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
lhat I claim is l. In a dust Cap or the like, the combination of means for positively clamping the Cap upon a. tire valve or the like, and a sepa-rate frietional meanS for engaging the ytire valve, said rietional means being adapted to permit the cap to be slid on and off the valve.
f2. In a dust cap or the like, the combination of means for positively clamping the cap upon a tire valve or the like, and a separate frietional means for engaging the tire valve, said frictional means being adapted to permit the Cap to be slid on and off the valve, and Said fi'ietipnal means comprising a ring-shaped member adapted to yielclingly engage the tire valve casing.
3. In a clust cap for tire valves or the like, the combination of a cap portion, a :toot portion, a ring-shaped clamping member adapted to be oireumfe-rentially shortened by a relative movement of the cap portion and foot portion, and a ring-shaped catch adapted to yieldingly engage a valve easing or the like. A
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
MAXIMILIAN CHARLES SCHWENERT.
