WILT-TAM H. UPTON. OF'NEW YORK. N. Y.
PROTECTOR FOR VALVE-S TEMS OF TIRES.
., Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 1918 Application filed February 6, 1917. Serial No. 146.911.
" T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it'knownthat'LJVILLIAn H. Ur'rox, a
- citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Protectors .for Valv e-Ste1ns of Tires, of which the follow- 111 is a specification.
his invention relates to improvements inv protectors for valve stems of tires, with the object in view of providin a device which will hold the valve securely in place and protect it from injury, and'which may be applied and removed with a very slight ma nipulation.
Another object ,is to provide a device which has a closed end capable of being removed to give access to the valve cap, for inflating the tire, without going through the process of uncovering the entire valve stem.
which projects above the folly. v
y A further object consists in providing certain improvements in the form, construc- {ion and arrangementof the several arts ifvhereby the above named and other a vantages may be effectively carried out.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawstain of the parts released and thedevic'e ready to be removed from the stem,
ings, in which?- Figure 1 represents a sideelevation of my device appliedto a valve stem, showing a portion of the felly in section, 4
Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal central section of the same,
F'g. 3 representsa similar view with oer Fig, drepresents a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line IV-IV of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 represents a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line V-V of Fig. 3,
Fig. 6 represents a side elevation of a modified form of device, and
Fig. 7 represents a longitudinal. central section of the same. 4
The invention consists in general of a device designed for use in connection with a valve stem and the felly of the wheel and comprises a sleeve denoted byl, which is of tubular form and has its inner end 2 provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots 3. This end 2 has an interior-1y screw threaded portion 4 which is normally expanded and adapted to yield towardand away trom '6. is manipulated.
thus leaving the device free to the valve stem The yielding movement of the end 2 is controlled by a member 6 which is provided with tongues 7 fitted to slide freely in the slots 3. The number 6 has formed thereon winged extensions 8 by which the member is readily manipulated. The member 6 is also provided with a tubular shield 9 which covers the slots 3 and prevents dust and dirt from entering therethrough.
A washer 10 of leather or other suitable material is held in a recess 11 in; the memher 6 and is arranged to be forced against the telly 12 around the valve stem 5.
To protect the outer end.of the shield 9, the sleeve has formed thereon a housing 1.3, in which the shield moves when the member In Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the sleeve is shown at 15, and provided with ears 16,.by which the cap may be manipulated.
In Figs. 6 and 7 the'sleeve lhasa closed end 17 formed integral therewith.
In using this device, the -sleeve is passed over the projecting valve stem 5 and the member 6 forced wn upon the yielding portion of the sleeve, which causes the screw threaded portion to engage the threads on moved. a
In the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the device must-be removed bodily to leave-the nipple in position to receive the pump for inflating the tire, while in Figs. 1,2 and 3, the closed. end 14 only is removed from the sleeve to expose the nipple to view.
It is evident that changes may be resorted-to in the form, construction and arrangemen't of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my 1nshown with a closed. end 14 which has a screw threadedengagement therewith, as
e bodily re-- vention; hence I do not wish to limit 1n strictlyto the structure herein set forth, but 1 What I claim is 1. A protector for valves comprising a sleeve having a housing and a slotted end, said slotted end havin normally expanded interior screw-thread portions, means slid-.. ably interlocked with the slotted end for contracting-said portions for bringing them into engagement with the valve stem, winged extensions for manipulating said .means and a shield carried by said means and slidable in said housing for covering the slotted end of the sleeve.
- 2. A protector for valves comprising a sleeve having a capped end, a housing and a slotted end, said slotted end having normally expanded interior screw-threaded portions, means slidably interlocked with the slotted end for contracting said portions for bringing them into engagement with the valve stem, winged extensions for mani ulati said means, anda shield carried y sai the slotted end for contracting said 'por-f tions for bringing them into engagement with the valve stem, winged extensions formanipulating said means and a shield car-(35.
ried by said means and slidable in said housing for covering the slotted end of the sleeve.
In. testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 2nd day of February, 1917.
WILLIAM UPTON.
