Be it known that I, MEYER STEiN, a citi-v zen of the United States of America, residing in Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented the quick detachable type.
certain new and useful Improvements in Dust Caps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to dust caps and aims to provide certain improvements therein.
The present invention more particularly is directed to dust caps for tire valves of Dust caps of this general type have been heretofore ably being provided with internal screw threads whereby it may function as a base nut for the valve stem. A detachable connection between the foot portion and the cap portion is provided by a pin and bayonet slot connection between the parts, spring means being employed to retain the v cap and foot portions in assembled relation.
Referring to the drawings wherein I have shown the preferred embodiment of my iii-- vention:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the assembled Fig. 2 is a view partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section showing the cap mounted on a valve stem;

Referring to the drawings let A indicate the dust cap as a whole which consists of a cap portion B and a foot portion C, as best seen in Figs. 2 and 3. The cap portion as herein shown consists of a substantially cylindrical member the outer end of which is closed and the open end of which is preferably somewhat enlarged as shown at D and provided at its open end with diametrically opposite bayonet slots or grooves E. The slots E are preferably formed with a reverse groove portion a the function of which will be apparent as the description proceeds. V
The foot portion C, according to the present invention, is preferably formed with. an internal screw thread F adapted to engage over the threads of the valve stem G and serve as a base nut for said valve. A wrench engaging surface H is preferably formed on said member for facilitating the application of a turning force thereto in order t provide a tight engagement between said member and a felloe I of the vehicle wheel through which the tire valve G passes. As is common practice the base of the foot portion is provided with a packing washer K and the filling piece L in a. manner well known in the art. To accommodate the cap portion and retain it on the foot portion suitable means are provided. As herein shown these consist of a bushing M, transversely extending pins N carried thereon, a spring pressed collar 0 and the helical coiled spring P. The parts M, N, O and P are preferably carried by the foot portion. As herein shown the bushing M is formed integrally with the foot portion C and extends up wardly from the screw threaded portion F but is of slightly larger diameter so as to clear the threads on the valve stem G. Adjacent its upper edge it carries the transversely extending pins N which are designed to enter the bayonet slots E in the cup portion. These pins may be affixed to the bushing M by riveting, soldering or in any other desired manner. The spring P which is carried by the bushing'M is preferably so positioned thereon as to be entirely enclosed from the action of the elements and weather. To accomplish this the bushing is formed of double walls m m between which the spring is positioned and the upper end of the spring enclosed by the collar 0 which is telescopically mounted on the bushing below the pins N. The pins N thus limit the upward movement of the collar O and prevent it from falling oif the bushing.
In the operation of the device the foot portion C is permanently carried by the tire valve. To apply the cap portion it is slipped over the projecting portion of the valve stem until its bottom edge contacts the pins N. It is then slightly turned until the bayonet slots E engage over the pins N whereupon by continuing the rotation and applying slight downward pressure against the action of the spring pressed collar 0 the pins N snap into the reverse curved por-- tion 0 of the bayonet slots and are held therein by the outward pressure of the spring pressed collar acting against the base of the cap portion. To remove the cap it is merely necessary to slightly turn the cap in the opposite direction whereupon the pins N will be caused to disengage the bayonet slots and the cap may be lifted ofi.
While I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention it will be un derstood that I do not wish to be limited to the details of construction as set forth since various changes may be made therein with out departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
A dust cap comprising a foot portion having a combined base nut and cap bush ing, said bushing having a pair of spaced walls, the inner wall extending beyond the outer wall a spring in said bushing between the walls, a collar slidable on the inner wall and telescoping over the outer wall, said collar being urged outwardly by the action of the spring, projections on the inner wall limiting the outward movement of the collar and a cap portion having bayonet slots for engaging the projections.
