To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE Lnwls HooAN, a citizen of the United. States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook andtate of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Roll-Paper Cutters for Printing and Sealing Wrappers, of WhlCh the following is a specification.
My invention relates toimprovements in devices to attach tothe ordinary roll paper cutter whereby the wrapping paper'may be printed as it is pulled ofi the roll and sealed when wrapped around the package, and relates particularly to, first a construction that will'permit the printing roller a free motion to and from the paper roll without having to counteract the resistance due to inertia of the frame carrying the prlntmg roller, second to rovide a simple and quick method of removlng one printing roller and substituting another, third to afford a simple form of springs for feeding the printing roller to the roll paper as it 1s unwound and the roll becomes smaller, fourth to provide a simple form of guard to protect the mechanism and render it easily accessible, and fifth to provide a simple means of sealing the package after wrapped.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustratedin the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the .entire mechanism mounted on an ordinary paper cutter; Figure 2 is an elevation of such mechanism in which the side supports of the paper cutter are omitted; Figure 3 is a plan view of the mechanism w1th the gum tape holder removed; Figure 4.- 1s a erspective view showing the notched bearin and slide covers for the. axis of the printing roller; and Fi re 5 is a part .sectional view on plane 5 illustrating how the cover guard is hinged to the frame work of the machine.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The paper cutter F is of the ordinary type such as used in general trade, G is the roll of paper. The clamp member YZ-W has two downward projecting jaws, a clamp screw 8 is fitted in the front jaw Y by which the upper cross member may be clamped between this clamp screw and the back jaw Z. The clamp member terminates in two car extensions W in the rear to a U shaped frame Q, to
N-N are bearings milled in from the top of the frame of a longitudinal shape being longer in a direction towards the paper roll, the axes EE are made to work loosely in these bearings and the frame is prevented from dropping away from such axes by slide members D-D which are bent over the edges of the frame Q and notched out in their central portion so that when the printing roller is placed in position its axes will be held in these notched bearings by sliding the members D-D to cover the top opening of such bearings.
'X are screw rods screwed into opposite sides of the main clamp member aroun which spiral springs TT are wound one Z and its other end forming an arm that presses down upon the axes of the printing roller E-E thus giving it pressure to follow theinequalities of the paper roll by the freedom of the axes E-E from the frame Q allowing the printing roller to respond puickly without the counteracting inertia o the frame which is used only as a support and to give rigidity for tracking. In order to get a number of turns on the spring '1 I form a recess or narrow the clamp member at the art where the screw rods XX are locate I provide a cover guard to protect the mechanism which is comprised preferably of apiece of sheet metal bent down at the upper end and around screws 0-0 which pro ect through the frame Q, the sheet of metal is then bent to cover and conform with the po sition of the rollers andbent over at its other end to snap over the lower end of the frame The printing roller B is preferably of wood around which type formed of rubber composition may be tacked.
To the main clamp member Y-Z-W I attach an upward extending bar 13 through end of each respective spring resting against which is fixed a screw axis 4 fitted with a bar washer 2 and clamp nut 3 for holding a roll of gum tape in position to allow it to rotate in unwinding about the axis 4. I also attach to this main clamp member another upward extending bar curved outward from the face of the roll of tape and terminating in a knife edge for cutting the tape as 1t is pulled out over its curved surface under a guide band 5. I also attach a moistener preferably a cup and sponge under thls curved member 6 for moistening the tape after it 1s cut off, such cup is indicated by 7 and such sponge by 12.
The operation of the devlce is as follows. The cover C is raised and ink applied to the rollers LK, the cover is then put down and the machine clamped on to the upper bar 20 of the paper cutter. The spring arms T-T will press the printing roller agalnst the roll of wrapping paper which when pulled off will by friction cause the printing roller to revolve and print the outer layer of paper, which is then torn off and wrapped around the package and the operator then takes hold of the end of the gum tape 1 and pulls off as long a piece as desired and, gives it a downward jerk over the knife edge 6 and thus cuts it off and then passes it over the wet sponge moistening the gum and applies it to seal the wrapper.
I claim:
1. The combination with a paper-roll paper roll and the holder, of a printing attachment comprising a support, a printing roller, a frame having spaced side members carrying the printing roller, said frame being pivoted to the aforesaid support to swing in a direction to bring the printing roller into contact with the paper roll, means for loosely supporting the printlng roller in the frame to permit movement toward and from the paper roll independent of the frame, and spring for maintaining the printing contact of the printing roller with the paper roll, said springs being anchored to the aforesaid support and bearing against the journals of the printing roller.
2. The combination with a paper-roll holder, of a printing attachment comprising a support, a printing roller having end journals, a frame having spaced side members between which the roller is located and provided with bearing apertures in which the journals of the roller seat, said apertures being elongated in the direction of the printing roller journals being slidable therein, a support to which the frame is pivoted to permit the printing roller to swing toward and from the paperroll, and springs anchored to the aforesaid support and bearing against the roller journals for maintaining a yielding contact of the printing roller with the paper roll.
