Be it known that I, Tnnooonn M. 'Foo'rn, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Allston, in the county f Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have 'invented an Improvement in Strip-ServinggApparatus, of which the following, description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to strip serving apparatus and-particularly to .those in which the strip is drawn manually from a roll or package by the operator.
In order that the principle of the invention-may be readily understood, 1 have disclosed certain embodiments-thereof in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a strip serving apparatus embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the construct on shown in Fig. 1* with parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is a plan view, partially in section, upon the line 3-3 in Fig. 1, of the for ward portion of the apparatus; Fig. 4 is a front elevation with parts broken away of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 55' of Fig. 4. of the forward portion of the apparatus and representing the strip as positioned during non-service; Fig. 6 is a similar view representing the strip as positioned duringservice; Fig. 7 is an enlarged vertical sectional View of the moistening and cooperating portion of a pparatus, parts being omitted for'ol'earness; Fig. 7 is a plan view of a detail of the apparatus; Fig. 8 is a vertical section of the forward portion of a modified form of strip serving apparatus, the parts being in the position assumed during nonservice; Fig. 9 is a similar view, but repre senting the parts as positioned during service; Fig. 10 is a vertical sectional view of the apparatus shown in Fig. 8, the moistener roll being omitted; and Fig. 11 is a plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 9.
Referring more particularly to thedrawings and first to that form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, the base of the apparatus is represented at 1, it having formed therewith or secured thereto a roll or package holder 2, here shown as a substantially cylindrical casing having secured in the fixed vertical face thereof a threaded spindle 3 adapted to receive thereon the Specification of Letters 1 atent.

By ribbing or corrugating or otherwise interrupting the said surface, I prevent the flow of water along said roll and thence onto the strip. In the operation of the device, water may accumulate upon some portion of the rocking frame and were the surfaceof the roll 32 not interrupted as described, this water might come in contact with the surface of the strip. The tension of said spring or springs may beadjusted by engaging one end thereof with the desired pin or pins 38. It is, of course. evident that the pivoted frame may be suitably weighted to effect the same result. It is apparent that in this embodiment of my invention the strip is severed at a point somewhat in advance of the rear edge of the moistened area. Therefore when the free end of the strip is elevated as indicated in Fig. 5. there is thereon some moisture. which under some conditions of use may tend to flow back down the face of the strip to the guard 34. By providing the edge 34 with serrations I prevent any tendency of the strip adhering ob ectionally to said edge during periods of non-use. In other words, any adherence will be merely to the tips of the serrations and the strip may readily be freed therefrom by a slight forward pull. Moreover, the contact of the edge 84 with the strip insures the positioning of the strip the moistener substantially as indicated in Fig. 5.- i
In Figs. 8 to 11 inclusive, l have represented a somewhat different form of my in vention. Therein I provide any suitable .moistening device, such as a roll 39 which may be similar in all respects with the moistener roll 16. Upon suitable standards 40 I pivot, as indicated at 41, a frame composed of side members 42 having a top connecting strip 43, the front edge 44 of which is suitably sharpened or serrated to provide a strip severing edge. Loosely mounted between the arms 42 are pivoted two rolls 45, 46 over and under which the strip passes, as indicated in Figs. 8 and 9. Encircling the pivot 41 of the frame and attached respectively to the frame and to one of the standards 40 is a spring 47 tending normally to hold or maintain the frame in the elevated position indicated in Fig. 8. The standards are provided with an extension 49 constituting a shoulder or stop'with which said frame contacts when elevated and to limit its backward movement. When the strip is drawn upon for use, its contact with the rear surface of the roll 45 depresses the frame, as indicated in Fig. 9, so that the roll 46 presses the strip into contact with the surface ofthe moistener in substantially the manner described in connection with Figs. 5 and 6. The spring or springs 47 yield to permit this depression of the frame, and after a suitable length of strip has been drawn from the roll, it is then deflected upwardly against the severing edge 44, which when the arm brings up against the shoulders 49 severs the strip. The free end of the severed strip remains elevated or separated from the moistener, as indicated in Fig. 8.
It is evident from the foregoing description that onlya sufficient amount of moisture is presented to the gummed surface of the strip to effect the proper moisteni-ng thereof. All excess moisture, which would re suit in undue wetting and weakening of the strip. is excluded or discharged from the face of the moistener before it is presented to the strip. The strip itself is positively pressed into contact with the suitably moistened surface of the moistener. and thereby the gum is instantly softened. After strip severance. the free end of the strip is removed from contact with the moistener.
Having thus described certain illustratlVQ embodiments of my invention, I deliquid to the strip and to prevent the pres entation of liquid in excess of said film, strip severing means, and a strip presser actuated by draft upon the strip to press the strip, when drawn upon, into intimate engagementwvith saidliquid film.
A strip serving apparatus comprising in combination a strip roll support, a nonabsorbentmoistener having means to present a thin film of liquid tovthe strip, strip severing means, and means actuated by service draft upon ithe strip to press the strip into intimate engagement with said liquid film and upon strip severance positively to effect separation of the strip and moistener.
3. A strip serving apparatus comprising in combination a strip roll support, a rotatable moistener cooperating therewith having a non-absorbent periphery, means to present a thin film only of liquid to the strip, means to press the strip into contact with the moistener during strip service, and
means to separate the strip from the moistener after strip service.
4. A strip serving apparatus comprising in combination, a strip roll support, a moistener, a severing blade against which the strip may be manually drawn for severance, and means controlled by strip service and constructed and arranged to press the strip into contact with the moistener during strip service, and to remove it therefrom after strip service into strip grasping position, with its free end supported out of contact with the severing blade.
A strip serving apparatus comprising in combination, a strip roll support, a mois tener, a severing blade against which the strip may be manually drawn for severance, and a pivoted frame controlled by strip service and having a pressing member to engage the strip and constructed and arranged to press the strip into contact with the mois tener during strip service and to lift the strip therefrom after strip service into grasping position with its free end out of contact with the severing blade.

A strip serving apparatus comprising in combination. a strip roll support, a moistener. strip severing means above and in the rear of the moistening point, and a movare employed, they are used in a to position the able strip presser constructed and arranged to engage the strip'and to press it during service into contact with the moistener, and free end of the strip after severance in grasping position between the moistener and the severing blade. v

A strip serving apparatus comprising in combination a striproll support, a nonabsorbent moistener having means to present a thin film of liquid to the strip,.strip severing means, a movable presser actuated by service draft upon the strip to press the strip into. intlmate engagement with the liquidfilm, and co-acting means between which and the presser the strip passes to the moistener, 'said co-acting means being movable with the presser to lift the strip positively off the moistener on the strip severance.

10. A strip serving'apparatus comprising in combination, a strip roll support, a moistener, a movably mounted strip presser actur ated by service the latter against the moistener, and a mo1sture excluding shield and strip lifter movable with the presser.

A strip serving apparatus comprising a strip roll support, strip severing means at one side of the service path of the strip, strip moistening means at the other side of said service path, and means actuated by service draft upon the strip to press the strip into effective contact with the moistener, and having provisions for moving the strip toward the severing means.

A strip serving apparatus comprising in combination, a strip roll support, a moistener, strip severing means positioned above the service path of the strip against which the strip is adapted to be lifted, a strip presser mounted closely adjacent to the moistener, and moved by service draft to press the strip against the. moistener and movable with the strip for strip severance, and a strip lifting and shielding member movable with the presser.

A strip serving apparatus comprising in combination, a strip support from which a strip may be drawn by the hand of the operator, a non-absorbent moistener having means to present a thin film of liquid to the strip, strip severing means, and a strip presser actuated by draft upon the strip to press the strip when drawn upon into intimate engagement With said liquid film.
23.;A strip serving apparatus comprising in combination, a strip roll support, a moistener, a severing blade above the service path of the strip and against which the strip may be deflected for severance, and a strip presser between the moistener and severing blade and constructed and arranged to engage the strip and to press it into contact with the moistener during strip service and to posi tion the free end of the strip after severance in graspingposition between and out of contact with the moistener and severing blade.
