MOSES W. LEE, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO
CHARLES J. GRGVE OI YQRK, PENNSYLVANIA.
Application filed April 18,
T 0 all whom it 7220;2 concern:
Be it known that 1, Moses 1V. Len, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strip Printing and Moistening Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to devices for dispensing gummed strips of paper as required for packaging or other purposes; and it consists in improved means for printing and moistening the fed strip as fully set forth in connection with the accompanying drawing and clearly defined in the subjoined claims.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section on the line 11 of Fig. 2, of a device embodying my improvements.
2 is a plan view, with the pivoted printing roll carrier broken away.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sec ional View on the lines 33 of 1 and 2.
As shown the main frame of the device comprises a base portion 10 and laterally spaced longitudinal members 11, 11, rising therefrom; the strip roll 12., which is r-ioun'ted in axle supporting standards atone end of the frame, depending liietwccn said spaced frame members as I. f and a water container 15 carrying a moistening roll 16. being located thercbctwcen at the opposite end.
Intermediate of the strip roll 12 and moistening roll 16. the frame members 11 11 as indicated, carry upon frame flanges 11, 11 a top plate 18 which is separately formed from sheet metal with upturned strip- guide flanges 19, 19. This top plateserves to support the gunnned strip which passes thereto from roll 12 under a suitable guide roller or pin 91; and it also serves, in connection with the printing roll mechanism hereinafter referred to, as a fixed printing bed.
The printing roll carrier frame 25., has removably mounted therein a printing roll 26, and an inking roll 27 therefor pressed into inking contact by springs 28; and it is formed with depending pivoting arms 29, 29 which are connected to the frame members 11, 11 by pivot pins 30, respectively so that the printing roll 26 will be swung into contact with the passing paper strip on top 1923. serial No. 632,818.
plate 18 with a printing pressure as determined by connected springs 31.
As the paper strip is fed from the roll 12 under cooperating action of printing roll 26 and the fixed top plate 18, it is passed through an end passage-way 34 formed by a cutter plate fixedly space-d above the for ward end of the strip supporting top plate; so that any determinedly extending strip portion may be readily severed from the main strip at the forward end of the top plate 18, leaving the severed extremity of the latter resting on the end portion of said plate.
It will be seen that the mounting of the moistening roll 16 in the water container 15, and the positioning of the same at the front of the frame, is so arranged that the periphery of the roll 16 clears the front edge of the top plate 18 on which the severed strip end rests, and also extends above the level of the latter; the purpose and effect of such arrangement being-first that the strip end is supported free of possible contact with the surface of the moistening roll and consequent unintended moistening of the same; and second that the subsequent feeding onward of the strip for further use naturally brings its extremity into contact with the elevated surface of the roll so as to insure satisfactory moistening thereof for proper adhesion. The strip may be convenient y pushed forward by the operators finger to cause such contact with the moistenino; roll and the printing is automatically efli'e'ted as the portion of strip needed is pulled forward in contact with the moistening roll.
What I claim is:
1. A strip-serving mechanism comprising a frame having laterally spaced horizontal members with roll supporting standards at one end thereof; a top plate on said frame members and forming a strip-supporting guide; a roll-carrier pivoted to said frame members and carrying a printing roll arranged to bear downwadly upon a strip supported by said plate; a strip cutter spaced above the forward end of said stripsupporting guide plate; and a moistening roll at the forward end of said frame members.
2. A strip-serving mechanism comprising a frame having laterally spaced horizontal members with roll supporting standards at the rear end thereof, a top plate on said.
frame members arranged intermediate the ends of the-latter and forming a strip-supporting guide, a roll carrier pivoted to said 5 frame members and carrying an inking and a printing r011, means for causing the printing roll to bear downwardly upon astrip supported by said plate, a strip cutter spaced above the forward end of said stripsupporting guide plate, and a inoistening roll at the forward end of said frame members.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
MOSES V. LEE.
