This invention relates to a strip feeding or dispensing machine.
' More particularly stated the invention relates to a machine for feeding or, dispensing adhesive strips, such as are commonly used for securing wrapped packages. Machines of this type are provided with means for moistening the gummed strip as it is fed and for cutting the strip to the proper length.
The package or article wrapper often places a label on the wrapped package and in the usual machine of this type no provision is made for moistening the label and thus the wrapper must expend a material amount of time in moistening and securing the label to the wrapped package.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide in a machine of the character described eflicient means for guiding the strip to the moistening device and from the feeding means.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a strip moistening and dispensing machine means for guiding a label into contact with the moistening device and out of the machine. I 25 Another object of the invention is to provide a machine of the character specified with a presser for pressing the strip on the moistening device and furthermore to provide means on the presser for guiding a label to the moistener.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine of the character specified with means for preventing buckling of the strip as it is fed through the guideways and between the cutters.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following specification taken in connection with the drawings which form a part of this application, and in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a machine constructed in. accordance with the invention, this view being taken substantially on line 11 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the machine shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and showing the cutter and strip guiding and directing means; and
Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged sectional elevations illustrating the moistener, presser and strip and label guiding means.
The invention briefly described consists of a machine for feeding and dispensing a strip of material, preferably a gummed strip, and means for moistening the strip as it is fed out of the machine. The moistening means comprises a moistening device adapted to feed the liquid upwardly by capillary action, such as a brush, and a presser for pressing the strip into contact with the moistener. Means is provided in conjunction with the presser for guiding the w strip to the moistener and also for guiding a label from the upper surface of the presser therethrough into engagement with the moistener. Means is also provided in conjunction withthe presser for guiding a label to the guide- 65 way formed in the presser. The machine also has incorporated therein means in the form of a resilient member for 'preventing the strip from buckling as it passes between the cutting knives and through a gap formed between adjacent and alined guideways.
Further details of the invention will appear from the following description.
Inv the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings a machine is shown for dispensing a gummed strip and a moistener is provided for moistening the strip as it is fed from the machine. It will be understood, however, that instead of moistening a gummed strip, adhesive or glue may be applied 30 to the strip as it is fed from the machine.
The machine illustrated comprises side frame members 10 and 11 which are connected by end frame members 12 and 13. A cradle 14 is formed integral with the frame member 13 and 5 is provided with a plurality of rollers 15 which extend between the frame members 10 and 11. The cradle and rollers form the support for a roll 16 of paper, the strip being preferably led from the top of the roll, as shown at 17. As the strip is unwound from the roll, the roll will turn freely by reason of its engagement with the rollers 15. However, as the feeding movement stops the roll will rest against the surface 18 at the back of the cradle.
The strip is fed by a pair of rollers 20 and 21, the roller 20 being carried by the spring arm or arms 22 and being pressed downwardly thereby into engagement with the roller 21. The roller 21 is mounted on a spindle 23 disposed between the side frame members and is rotated by a gear 24 which meshes with the gear 25 carried by a spindle 26. A gear 27 is also carried by the spindle 26 and is driven by a gear 28 which is carried by a shaft 29 to which is secured a wheel 30.
The wheel 30 in the machine illustrated has a plurality of radially extending hand engageable handles or paddles 31 formed thereon which coact with a scale 32 formed on the side frame 10 to indicate the length of the strip fed. This feature forms no part of the present invention and a further v description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
A ledge or table 35 is provided in advance of the rollers 20 and 21 and the strip after passing between the rollers is fed through a guideway formed by a pair of guiding members 36 and 37.
The cutting'mechanism comprises a vertical stationary knife blade 40 and a lower vertically mounted blade 41 which is mounted on a fixed pivot 42 and is adapted to coact in shearing engagement with the blade 41.
The strip is normally fed between the knife blades 40 and 41 and passes into a guideway formed by a pair of guide members 43 and 44. The guideway formed by these members is alined with the guideway formed by the members 36 and 37 but is spaced therefrom in order to permit the knife blade 41 to sever the strip after the desired length has been fed. It has been found that any back pressure on the front portion of the strip due to its engagement by the operator or toany other cause tends to buckle the strip upwardly between the guideways just described. In order to prevent this buckling of the strip a spring 45 is mounted in a pocket 46 formed in a member 47 which is carried by or secured to the fixed cutter blade 40. The spring has a tab 50 formed on the central portion thereof which extends through a slot 51 and by means of which the upward movement of the spring is limited. This movement must be provided for since the spring 45 is in the path of movement of the pivoted blade 41.
The pivoted cutter 41 may be operated in any desired manner and in the machine illustrated a link 48 is connected at its upper end to the blade 41 and at its lower end to a bell crank lever 49 which is mounted on a fixed pivot 49'. The other end of the bell crank lever 49 is connected by a link 52 to a lever 53 which is mounted on a fixed pivot 53' and is provided at its free end with a laterally extending handle 54. Thelever 49 is actuated in a clockwise direction by a spring 50. When the operator pulls the handle 54 forwardly the pivoted blade 41 will be swung upwardly thus severing the strip.
After the strip has been fed in the manner described it passes over a moistener which, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, consists of a brush 55 which is mounted in a reservoir 56 and has a band 57 around the lower end thereof which is engaged by a lug or lugs 58 carried by the reservoir. The brush extends upwardly out of the reservoir and the strip is held in contact therewith as it is fed from the machine by means of a presser 60 which is pivotally mounted on a fixed pivot 61. The front end of the presser is preferably weighted, as shown at 62.
The presser is provided on its under surface with a guideway 63 formed by a pair of members 64 and 65. The member 64 extends into overlapping engagement with/the guide member 43. The presser also has a portion 66 beneath which the strip passes and by which it is pressed into engagement with the brush.
In addition to providing means for guiding and pressing the strip against the moistening member the presser is also provided with a guideway '70 for guiding a label through the presser and into moistening engagement with the brush. The guideway 70 is formed by the member 66 described and by a member 71 which is flared upwardly, as shown at 72, at the end of the guideway in which the label enters.
The top of the casing is covered by a lid or cover 75 which is pivoted at 76 and is provided at the front end with a pivoted extension or guide shield 77 pivoted at 78 to the front end of the cover. The extension 77 has a guideway 79 formed between the upper surface 80 of the extension and a guide member 81 which extends over the surface 80. The entrance to the guideway is flared by the upturned edge portion 82 of the member 81. A roller 83 is pivoted in lugs 84 which extend below the member 77, the roller extending through an opening 84 in the surface 80 and into the guideway 79. From a showing particularly in Figs. 4 and 5 it will be seen that the extension or lid 77 rests on the presser 60 and that the guideway 79 leads into the guideway 70 formed in the presser. The position of the extension 77 with reference to the presser is determined by the engagement of the front end of the extension with the presser beneath the upwardly flared edge 72. Attention is called to the fact that the guideway 79 is curved thus guiding the label to the moistener in a curved path.
The machine above described is used in the following manner: When a strip of material is to be fed across the moistener and out of the machine the wheel 30 is rotated thus causing the feed rollers 20 and 21 to feed the strip through the guideways formed by the members 36 and 37 and the members 41 and 43 to the guideway 63 formed in the presser. From this guideway the strip passes beneath the portion 66 of the presser and into engagement with the moistening brush 55. During the feeding movement any tendency of the strip to buckle upwardly as it passes between the stationary and pivoted knife is counteracted by the spring 45. After the strip has been fed to the desired length the cutting mechanism is operated and the strip is severed.
After the package has been secured by the gummed strip or strips a label is placed on the cover 75 and the front end of the label is passed into the guideway 79 over the roller 84 and from the guideway 79 into the guideway 70 and into engagement with the brush 55. It will be obvious that by providing means whereby the label can be moistened by means of a brush 55 and by simply passing the label through the guideways mentioned a material saving of time will be effected in the labeling of the package.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a strip dispensing machine, means for feeding a strip, a moistener, a presser for holding the strip against the moistener during its feeding movement, and means on the presser for guiding a label from a position above the presser through said presser and over and in contact with the moistener.
2. In a strip dispensing machine, means for feeding a strip, a moistener, a presser for holding the strip against the moistener during its feeding movement, means on the presser for guiding a label from a position above the presser through said presser and over and in contact with the moistener, and means on the presser for guiding the strip to the moistener.
3. In a strip dispensing machine, means for feeding a strip, a moistener, a gravity actuated presser for holding the strip against the moistener during its feeding movement, and means on the presser for guiding a label from a position above the presser through said presser and over and in contact with the moistener.
4. In a strip dispensing machine, means for feeding a strip, a moistener, a presser for holding the strip against the moistener during its feeding movement, and a guideway on the presser for guiding a label from a position above the presser through said presser and over and in contact with the moistener.
5. In a strip dispensing machine, means for feeding a strip, a moistener, a presser for holding the strip against the moistener during its feeding movement, a guideway on the presser for guiding a label from a position above the presser through said presser and over and in contact with the moistener, and means for guiding the label to said guideway.
6. In a strip dispensing machine, means for feeding a strip, a moistener, a presser for holding the strip against the moistener during its feeding movement, a guideway on the presser for guiding a label from a position above the presser through said presser and over and in contact with the moistener, and pivoted means for guiding the label to said guideway.

In a strip dispensing machine, means for feeding a strip, a moistener, a presser for holding the strip against the moistener during its feeding movement, a guideway on the presser for guiding a label from a position above the presser through said presser and over and in contact with the moistener, and means for guiding the label in a curved path to said guideway.
10. In a strip dispensing machine, means for feeding a strip, a moistener engageable by the strip, a pivoted presser resting on the moistener, a guideway for guiding the strip to the presser, and a guideway on the presser overlapping said first named guideway.
11. In a strip dispensing machine, a casing, strip feeding means therein, a moistener, a presser for pressing the strip against the moistener during its feeding movement, a cover for the receptacle, and coacting means carried by the cover and presser for guiding a label into contact with the moistener.
12. In a strip dispensing machine, a casing, strip feeding means therein, a moistener, a presser for pressing the strip against the moistener during its feeding movement, a cover for the receptacle, a pivoted guideway carried by said cover, and a. coacting guideway on the presser for guiding a label into contact with the moistener.
