To all whom t mayconcern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. VAN HORN, a lcitizen of the United States, residing at Nutley, in the county of Essex andl State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Door Operator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closure operators, and aims to improve the construction as shown in my Patent Number 1,388,533, and which was granted to me under date of August 23,1921.
The primary object of the invention is to provide novel means designed for opening garage doors or the like, means including a structure operable from a point remote from the closure, eliminating the necessity of a person alighting from his car to accomplish the opening of the closure.
Another object of the invention isto provide means for holding the closures against movement or rattling while in their closed positions, the kmeans being also capable of cushioning the movement of the closures as the same engage their frames.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention residesY in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from thespirit of theinvention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmental rear elevational view of closures disclosing the same in their closed positions.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the latch mechanism disclosing the position of the same when the closures are in their open positions.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through one of the plungers and its housing.
Figure 4 is a longitudnal sectional view through one of the connecting arms disclosing the adjustable construction.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the frame in which the hinged closures 6 and operate. A bracket 8 is supported by the frame, and embodies a pair of arms 9 that are provided with openings to accommodate the vertical shaft 10 that supports the head 11.
' This head 11 is formed with an extension 12 that provides av seat for one extremity of the coiled spring 13, the spring being shown as having one end thereof seated in the opening 14 formed in the head 11. The opposite end of the coiled spring has connection'with a rotatable adjusting head 15 which is provided with teeth formed in the lower surface thereof, which teeth cooperate with the teeth formed in one of the arms 9of the bracket 8. Thus it will be seen that the tension of the spring 13 may be regulated by rotating the head 15, it being understood that the tension of the spring forces the teeth into engagement with each other to prevent rotary movement of the head with respect to the arm 9 associated therewith.
A connecting arm indicated at 16 has one end thereof threaded and positioned in a threaded opening ofthe head 411, as clearly shown by Figure 4 of the drawings, there being provided an opening adjacent the outer end of the arm to accommodate the cotter pin 17, which connects the opposed sections of the arm. A tubular member 18 houses the arm 16 and is provided with spaced openings 19 which may be brought into registry with the opening in the arm 16 to accommodate the cotter pin and hold the tubular member in various positions vof adjustment with respect to the. arm 16 to lengthen or shorten the throw of the arm. As shown, the tubular section is provided with a threaded portion to accommodate the head 20 which is formed with a keeper 21 to cooperate with a latch member 22 that moves vertically within its housing 23. lThe housing 23 is formed with lateral elongated openings designed to accommodate the transversely 'extending pin 24, whereby movement of the latch member 22 within its housing is restricted.
Forming a part of thelatch member 22 is a rod 25 that extends through an opening in one end of the housing and connects with a suitable ieXible connecting member 26 that has connection with the bell crank lever 27, whereby movement of the bell crank lever, results in a relative movement of the latch member 22, it being understood that the latch member is moved against the tension of the coiled spring 28 that is positioned in the housing 23 and embraces portions of the rod 25.
The head 20 is also provided with a cut out portion formed under the 'keeper V21 t'o receive the extension 30 forming a part oit the plunger 3l, which plunger is mounted'intlie housing 32 and operat'esagainst:the'tension of the coiled spring 33. v
