STAT
MAX SKOLNIK, OF E'IINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
FURNITURE.
App1ication filed September 12, 1921.
.T all whom it may concern Be it known .that I, MAX SKOLNIK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Articles of Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to articles of furniture. An object is to provide a construction of such character that articles of furniture may by readily constructed of parts adapted to be packed into a small space, and which may be quickly assembled and put together. While the principle of my invention is intended more partlcularly for use in connection with chairs, the same principle may be applied without material change in connection with various articles of furniture having vertical and horizontal parts which are to be secured together.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description, and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one of the embodiments of my invention,-Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a chair constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 5. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing one corner of the re-inforcing frame in side elevation. Fig. 4 is a view in horizontal section taken just below the seat member. Fig. 5 is a view in section on the line 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a view in section on the line 6--6 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 isa view in section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 8. Fig. 8 is a view in section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
Referring to the construction shown in the drawings which illustrate the invention embodied in a chair, the numerals 10 and 12 designate rear leg members and the numerals 14 and 16 designate front leg members. The rear leg members in the chair construction are extended up further than the front leg members and are connected by horizontal bars 18 and 20 which in turn are connected by a vertical member 22 whereby a back portion is formed. In order to secure the leg members together, I provide a substantially rectangular reinforcing frame having the four side pieces 24, 26, 28 and 30 which are held together at the corners by angular metal pieces or elements, the construction of which Serial No. 500,014.
is best shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Each of these metal pieces is constructed as follows: A middle portion 32 has its two ends bent towards each other through 135 so as to form portions 34 at right angles to each other and these portions are in turn bent outwardly from each other at right angles to form portions 36 which extend at a right angle to each other. As best shown in Fig. 3, the portions 36 are provided with holes to receive screws 38 by means of which the members 24, 26, 28, and 30 are secured to ether, as will be understood by referring to Fig. 4. For the purpose of aflixing the frame member thus produced to the four leg members each of these leg members is provided with a screwthreaded stud 40 fixed thereto and which extends at an angle of from the inner corner thereof. The studs 40 pass through holes or slots 41 in the middle portion 32 of the angular metal piece and are provided with thumb nuts 42. The upper end of each middle portion 32 is bent downwardly at right angles to form lugs 44. The four lugs 44 serve to support a seat member 46 which is held in place by screws 48 passing through holes in the lugs 44, as shown in Fig. 5. A pair of arm members 50 are shown secured in place in the following manner: rear bracket members 52 are secured to the rear legs 10 and 12 intermediate the upper and lower ends thereof and front bracket members 54 are secured to the front legs 14 and 16 at their upper ends. The horizontal portion of the bracket members are provided with slots 56 and 58 as shown in Fig. 8. The arm members are provided with screws 60 and 62 adapted to be slid into the slots 56 and 58 and then turned down to securely hold the arm members in place.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood in connection with the foregoing description. For shipping and packing purposes, the reinforcing frame is disconnected from the leg members, and in case arm members are used, these latter members are disconnected from the leg members also. When the invention is embodied in a chair construction, front leg members are not ordinarily connected to each other except as they are connected by the frame member in assembling the chair but the rear leg members may be conveniently connected together permanently by the bars or pieces which constitute the back of the chair. In assembling the article of furniture the parts are quickly secured together by passing the stud bolts through the holes or slots in the middle portion 32 of the angular metal pieces which are located at the four corners of the frame member. Upon turning down the thumb nuts 42, the leg members will be securely held together in proper position. When members such as the arm members are used, they are readily secured 'in place by sliding the screws and 62 into the slots in the bracket members 52 and 5 4 and then turning down the screws.
I claim:
An article of furniture comprising leg members, a frame member angular metal elements securing the parts of said frame member at the corners thereof, each of said metal elements having'a middle portion with its ends bent toward each other through sub? stantially to form portions extending at right angles to each other, and said last mentioned portions being bent outwardly from each other to form portions extending at right angles to each other and against which a leg'membe-r is adapted to rest, screwthreaded studs extending inwardly with a 45 relation from said leg members. and adapted to pass through openings in the middle portion of said angular elements, and thumb nuts for detachably securing said studs to said angular elements. a
In. testimony whereof 1 hereunto aifix signature.
