FURNITURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14 1915,
Application iled October 21, 1914. Serial No. 867,688.
Ta7/'fwhom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD WV. VALLI., J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Ora'dell, in the county of Bergen, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact disclosure. My invention relates to an article of f ur- '.nitureawhich .may be'used either as a seat or table and which may be easily converted from one to the other by a simple raising and lowering ofthe parts thereof.
For a detailed description of two forms of my invention, reference may be had to the following specification and to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof,
which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the device showing a part of the top thereof cut away to disclose the arrangement of parts when used as a seat; Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the device arranged as a table; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form.
Referring to Fig. l, the numerals 1 and 2 indicate two leaves hinged togetherv as at 3. The leaf 1 has two transverse strips 4: attached to its under side and which project a suitable distance beyond its inner edge, as indicated at 5, to form a support forl the opposite leaf 2, when said leaves are arranged as a table, as in Figs. 2 and The strips l are pivoted at 6 to uprights 'Z lextending from the rear legs 8 which are connected with the forward legs 9 in any suitable way but preferably by a frame which forms a box or other receptacle 10. Two members 11 and 12, hinged together' at their inner ends to form a toggle -joint,- are pivoted respectively to the strips et and theframe or box 10 as at 13 and 11. These members 11 and 12 form a strut or support which holds the two leaves 1 and 2 rigidly in position when ar-- d5 ranged either ask a seat or table. When -the parts are in the position of F 1g. 1, the spring of the projecting ends 5 of the strips 11 toward the front by reason of the limit of movement of the leaf 1 caused by the upleaf 1 forming'the back in upright position.
IVhen the seat is to be converted into -a a table the members 11 and 12 are first pushed i downward by hand, leaving the strips 4 'free rights 7, produces a pressure-between ther to move forward and to be raised to the position shown in Fig. 2 in dotted lines at 15. The members l1 and 12 either swing by Y momentum into-alinement as shown in full In the modification of Fig. 3 where the pivoted bars 16 form the ,strut and support for the seat and top, their outer ends are provided with a stud or bracket' 17 which engages recesses 18 and 19 in the strip 4 whenv the parts are inthe respective positions as a seat or table.-
It should be noted that the leaf 2 forms a convenient cover for the receptacle 10 which may be so proportioned as to be utilized as any useful household apparatus such as a tireless cooker or as an ice box.
The article as a whole may be made in varions sizes and proportions to adapt the same to different vuses. For example, the leaves may be shaped to form a square top when raised,- the-reby adapting the device for use as a card table.
I do not wish to be understood as being limited to the form and arrangement of parts set forth in the drawing for various changes may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scopeof my invention, but
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: v
1. An article of furniture, comprising two leaves hinged together, means for maint-aim ing the same in one plane, a frame having uprights on which one of said leaves is pivoted, supports between said frame and said means, and devices connecting said means and said frame withsaid leaves in two positions, to extend said leaves toA form a table A top, and to lock said leaves in angular relation as a back and seat.
2. An article of furniture, comprising two leaves hinged together, means for maintaining the same in o e plane, a frame having uprights on whic pivoted, and collapsible supports pivoted to said frame and to said .means to cause said leaves to forma table top, and adapted to lock said pivoted leaf upright in angular relation to saidother leaf to forma back and seat.
one of said leaves is4 3. An article of furniture, comprising two leaves hinged together, means for maintaining the same in one plane, a frame having uprights on which one of said leaves is pivoted and intermediately hinged bars pivoted to said frame and to said means and adapted when in alinement to support said leaves to form a table top and to lock said pvoted leall upright in angular relation to the other leaf to form a back and seat.
4. An article of furniture, comprising two leaves hinged together, strips fixed to one of said leaves and adagted to maintain said `'leaves in one plane, a frame having uprights EDWARD W. VAILL, J n.
