Description

H. A. SWITZER- FLAG RETAINERI APPLICATION FILED JAN. I5, 1920- ]Patented Nov. 211, 1922.

(F -n a -a e s l" i CL Y HARRY A. SWITZEB, 03E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FLAG RETAINER.
Application filed January 15, 1920. Serial No. 351,636.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. Swrrznn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia. in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flag Retainers, of which the following is a spec1 fication.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in iiag retainers. and has for its object to provide an exceedingly, simple and effective device of this description, which may be readily applied to a flag and the pole carrying the same, and thereafter so guide the ropes to which the flag is attached as to retain said into close alignment with the pole when it is raised.
A still further object of my invention is to provide for the ready attachment of the guiding device to the pole and V lVith these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains. may un dcrstand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which Fig. 1, shows a. flag pole and a flag thereon having my improvement applied thereto.
Fig. 2, is a. plan view of one member of my improved retaining device for attachment to the flag pole.
3, is a side elevation of Fig. 2.
Fig. i, is a. plan view of the clip for securement to the flag.
Fig. 5, is a side elevation of Fig. 4.
In carrying out my invention as here cmhodied, 1 represents the guideinemher consisting of band of metal so bent as to conform to the cross section of the flag pole 2 and provided with the ears 3 through which the attaching bolt 4. passes. By this arrangement this guide member may be readily placed in the desired position upon the pole and secured thereto by tightening up upon the bolts 4. 5 represents an eye which is formed from a partially cut out portion of the band 1 through which the rope 6 passes.
7 represents a clip having an eye 8 formed therein, said clip also having the holes 9 for the passage of eyelets or rivets whereby it may be secured to the inner lower corner of the flag 10. The eye 8 of this clip is intended for the passage of the rope 6.
@ne of the holes 9 may have engaged therewith a ring or rope loop 11 or the rope 12 may be attached through this hole as desired.
In practice the rops 6 is passed over the pulley 13 through suitable holes in the cap 14 secured to the upper corner of the flag or to a short rope carrying the flag, the other'end of the rope being threaded through the eye 5 of the band 1 and through the eye 8 of the clip 7 while the rope 12 is attached to the lower corner of the flag as before described. Thus when the flag is drawn upward by hauling upon the rope 6 the eye 8 riding up this rope will come in contact with the eye 5 and retain the lower corner of the flag in juxtaposition to the pole and thereby prevent the position of the flag from being distorted regardless of the force of the wind.
When the flag is being lowered by hauling downward upon the rope 12 the eye 8 slides downward upon the rope 6 preventing the flag from dying away from the rope 6 and lessening the tendency of its becoming entangled.
While I have here shown my improvement applied to a one piece pole it is obvious that it will work with equal facility upon the sectional poles or upon poles held hori- Zontally or at any angle.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and. useful is:-
In a flag retainer the combination with a flag pole provided with means for the attachment of a hoisting rope. said hoisting rope and a flag, to the upper end of which is fastened the hoisting rope, of a guide member, means for detachably and adjustably mounting said member on the pole below the point of attachment of the hoisting rope and a' clip carried by the lower end of the flag, said hoisting rope passing through said clip and guide member.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto afiixed my signature.
