Be it known that we, FRANK A. Tri'rn- MORE and CHARLES S. RnNwIoK, citizens of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Contra Costa and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumping Apparatus, of'which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in portable air brush plants of the t pe disclosed in Letters Patent No. 13477 90,

The invention has for its principal objects to provide a suitable air pump operated preferably by a small electric motor, and
which is connected through a flexible hose or connection with any of the conventional forms of air brushes now on the market, the brush being attached preferably to the discharge end of the hose and having associated therewith a small receptacle for containing the liquid to be applied, there being positioned in the hose adjacent the point of its attachment to the air brush, a condensation receiver and separator, which is capable ofbeing readily carried by the operator, and there being also associated with the apparatus a handle to facilitate the transporting thereof, and an air filter for removing the oil and other impurities from the air after it leaves the pump.
Another object is to provide a handle and an air filter of simple construction, and so mounted as to permit the ready cleaning of the filter and the supporting of the handle at one end of the filter casing.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to .Without departing from the Referring more particularly to the drawlngs, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts1 indicates a suitable portable base on which rests a small electrlc motor 2, the armature shaft 3 thereof being connected by a gear 4 with another gear 5 secured to the shaft 6 of a suitable air compressor 7. In the illustration, the air compressor is of the four-cylinder type, each cylinder discharging into an exhaust channel 9 in which is preferably mounted a pressure gauge 10.
To the discharge end of the exhaust channel is attached a suitable form of oil separating or filtering apparatus 11, which is adapted to trap any lubrication-which may be forced from the interior of the compressor into the exhaust channel 9 by the operation of the compressor pistons, thus preventing the oil from passing into the hose or flexible connection hereinafter described.
The separator comprises a bottom Wall member 11' upwardly from which extends a cylinder 112 resting thereon, and secured the same extends a handle forming pipe 115.

Threaded into the channel in the cap or cover 114 and extended into the cylinder 112 is an outlet pipe 31 for the filtered air, and the same mounts at its lower end within the cylinder a conical baffle 32 of a diameter slightly smaller than the interior of the cylinder. Suitable perforated plates 33 are carried by the pipe 31 above the baf fle 32, and the plates retain between them layers of finely divided or fibrous material 34, such as hair, wool or the like, capable of filtering the air as it passes downwardly therethrough and separating the oil therefrom. The air entering the cylinder through the channel 9 and carrying oil from the pump intermixed therewith passes downwardly through plates 33 and filtering material 34 where the oil is separated therefrom. The separated oil drains from plates 33 and filtering material 34 downwardly over the bailie 32 and drops from the edge thereof into the collecting sum B at the base of the cylinder 112 from w ich it is withdrawn through the drain opening 35.
.Connected to the discharge end of the handle forming pipe 15, through a suitable coupling 12, is one end of a flexible hose or connection 13, of any suitable length, the outer end of which is attached through a suitable connection 14 with av conventional form of air brush A, the form illustrated comprising a handle 15 into which the connection 14 leads, said handle being provided with a regulating valve 16 for controlling the air volume to be discharged from the hose 13 through the nozzle 17.
The nozzle 17 is preferably carried on the surface of the plate 18, which is attached to a suitable container 19 and forms a closure therefor, The plate or cover 18 is provided with a siphon opening 20 which terminates adjacent the discharge end of the nozzle 17, whereby the air discharged from said nozzle will withdraw the liquid from the chamber or receptacle 19 and project the same in the form of a spray, which is applied by the air force to the surface to be coated.
It will be apparent that on the operation of the motor, the air compressed by the compressor 7 is forced through the flexible hose 13 and the operator in applying the fluid is merely required to move the air brush A over the surface to be coated. this air brush being of comparatively light weight, is easily handled and the flexible hose permits of the ready moving of the same over the surface to be coated.
Interposed'in the hose 13, adjacent the coupling, 14 and adapted to be carried by the operator, is a small tank or trap 21, into which the air passing through the hose 13 is discharged, said member being connected at one end to one portion of the hose 13 by a coupling 24, the other portion of the hose 13 being detachably connected to the opposite or up er end. of the member 21 by a coupling 25. hould any condensation take place in the air while the same is passing through the hose, the same is trapped in the base of the member 21 and is capable of being withdrawn therefrom by the opening of the outlet valve 26 in the base thereof.
A safety valve or pressure relief member 9 of any well known type capable of opening on the accumulation of any predetermined pressure in the hose 13 is provided preferably within the cap or cover 114, said member 9 enabling a uniform pressure to be maintained within the air hose without the employment of a tank or accumulating chamber and at the same time preventing the bursting of the hose by any undue pressure therein.
We claim 1. A portable air compressor, comprising a portable base and an interconnected motor and compressor carried thereby, a vertically disposed tubular reservoir carried by the base, a connection between the compressor and reservoir, a portion of said reservoir being horizontally disposed longitudinally oy'er the base with its end secured to the m0- tor and affording a handle for the base.
2. A portable air compressor, comprising a portable base and an interconnected motor and compressor carried thereby, at opposite ends thereof, a tubular reservoir secured to the base adjacent said compressor and including a base plate, a shell detachably secured thereto. a tubular cap for closing the shell and a tubular extension from the cap disposed to overlie said base with its free end secured to the motor affording-a handle for the transporting of the base.
