Description
C. A. XARDELL.
DUST SEPARATOR.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 13. 1919.
Patented J an. 20, 1920;
CHARLES A. XARDELL, 0F UTICA, NEW YORK.
nUsT-snPAnA'roR. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. XARDELL, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Dust- Separators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a dust separator adapted for use in cleansing the air passing to the carbureter, of an internal combustion engine or-to an air pump or the like, and has for its object to provide a simple device which will efficiently serve the purpose in tended.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a vertical section of the improved separator, and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing a preferred construction of the internal cone.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes a casing part to the top of which is secured an attaching plate or ring 13 which is perforated or provided with a central egress opening and by whichthe device may be mounted in working position. 'Removably secured, as-by screws 14,'to the upper casing part is a lower casing part 15 within which is centrally mounted an air admission tube 16 extending up into the upper casing part and being provided at its top with a truncated cone 17 which is preferably furnished with spiral wings or blades 18.
Mounted within the upper casing part 12 and spaced apart from the cone 17 is a second cone 19 provided with air escape openings 20, the space between the cones'17 and 19 affording a passage or chamber in which the particles of dust or dirt will be separated from the incoming air, partly ,by, centrifugal action and partly by gravity,
the separated particles falling downinto a deflecting cone'21 located in the lower casing part 15. I v
The lower casing part 15 is preferably provided with a closed spout 22 to enable the chamber of the said lower casing part to be partly filled with oil or water, if desired, so as to more efficiently catch and retain particles of dust and dirt delivered into the chamber of the lower casing part from the deflecting cone 21. To enable the chamber of the lower casing part to be conveniently drained, if desired, a removable screw plug 23 is provided in the bottom thereof. When Specification of Letters Patent. t t 20, 1
Application filed March13, 1919. Serial No. 282,305.
the lower'casing part is to be emptied of dust and dirt accumulated therein said part will be detached from the upper casing part 12 by removing the screws 14 or other devices attaching the two. casing parts together.
In the operation of the separator the air to be cleansed enters at the bot-tom of the tube 16 and passes from the top of said tube to theseparating chamber 24 between the cones 17 and 19, and the cleansed air escapes from said chamber into the chamber 25 of the upper casing part through openings 20 ,in the cone 19. From the chamber 25 the cleansed air passes upward through the opening 26 in the-attaching plate 13, and is delivered where esired.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides a dust separator which may be used for a variety of purposes, and which is simple in construction and efficient in operation in that the air is thoroughly cleansed in v the chamber 21,
casing part and, carrying at its top a trun cated cone, said upper casing part having mounted therein a second cone placed above said truncated cone to aflord a dust separating chamber, said second cone being provided with air escape openings.
2. A dust separator consisting of upper and lower removably attached casingparts, the said upper casing part being-provided with means for. attachment in any desired position, and the said lower casing part hav-' ing a centrally'disposed air ingress tube extending -up into the chamber of the said upper casing part and carrying at its to a truncated cone provided with spiral bla es,
said upper casing part having mounted therein a second cone placed above said truncated cone to afford a dust separating chamber, said second cone being provided with air escape opemngs.
3. A dust separator consisting of upper and lower removably attached casing parts, said upper casing part being provided with means for attachment in any desired position and the said lower casing part having a centrally disposed air ingress tube extending up into the chamber of the said upper casing part and carrying at its top a truncated cone, said upper casing part having mounted therein a second cone placed above said truncatedcone to-afiord a dust separating chamber, said second cone being provided with air escape openings, and said lower casing part being provided with a deflecting cone discharging particles of dust or dirt into the lower chamber of the device.
cated cone provided with spiral blades, said upper casing part having mounted therein a second cone placed above said truncated cone to afi'ord a dust separating chamber,
I said second cone being provided with air escape openings, and-said lower casing part beingprovided with a deflect-ing'cone discharging particles of dust or dirt into the 1 lower chamber of the device.
5. A dust separator consisting of upper said truncated cone to afi'ord a dust separat ing chamber, said second cone being'provided with air escape openings, and said lower casing part being provided with a closed filling nozzle or opening and a removable drainage plug.
6. A dust separator consisting of upper and lower lemovably attached casing parts, said upper casing part being provided with means for attachment in any desired position, and the said lower casing part. having a centrally disposed ingress tube extending up into the chamber of the said upper casing part and carrying at its top a truncated cone provided with spiral blades, said upper cas ing part having moimted therein a second cone placed above said trlmcated cone to afford a dust separating chamber, said second cone being provided with air escape openings, and said lower casing part being provided with a closed filling nozzle or opening and a removable drainage plug.
In testimony whereof I aflix my si ature. 7 CHARLES A; XARD LL.
