FRED NEWMAT, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
FLUE CLEAN-OUT.
Application Icd June 2,
T @ZZ 'LU/7mm t may concern.'
Be it known that l, FRED NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of lentucliy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F lue Clean-Outs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the clean-outs of chimneys or iluesD and has for one of itsobjects to provide a simply constructed attachment whereby danger of the escape of ignited soot and cinders through the clean-out is obviated, and at the same time means provided for the easy removal of accumulations of soot and ashes and the like.
lll/'ith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in thev drawing illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure l is a front elevation of the iinproved device.
2 is a verticalsection taken on the line 2-2'of Fig l.
The improvement comprises a shell or casing l0 of sheet metal and adapted to be built in or inserted in an opening in a chimneyor flue at the lowest possible point, the walls of the Hue being indicated at ll. The shell l0 is preferably formed with an external flange l2 and internal flange 13,
, the external flange supporting an outer closure or door lei, hingedly connected at l5 to the flange 12 and provided with a suitable catch 16.
Disposed within the shell l0, and. preferably near its inner edge, is a combined cutoff and chute comprising bottom portion 17 and side franges or guards 18. The combined chute and cut-o is hinged at 2O to the bottom member of the shell and when 1922. Serial No. 565,500.
in vertical position as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, completely closes the interior of the shell and forms an effectual out off and coacts with the door lli, to effectually prevent the escape of any ignited soot, sinders or the like. The member 1T is provided with a handle 2l to facilitate its handling. lVhen the door let is opened, the cut-olf meniber may be turned down into the position shown by dotted lines in 2 and thus form an effectual 4chute to facilitate the removal of soot and ashes from the Chinmoy.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawing and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood .that modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention what p is claimed as new is l. A device of the class described coinprising a shell adapted to be set in an opening in a flue, a closure for the outer end of said shell7 a combined chute and cut-oil movably disposed within said shell and when disposed in one position forming a guide means for the removal of ashes and'soot through the shell.
'2. l device of the class described com prising a shell adapted to be set in an opening in a flue, a closure for the outer end of said shell7 a combined chute and cut-off hingedly connected to the bottom of the shell and extending beyond the outer face of thc saine when in. lowered position to form a guide means for the removal. of ashes and soot through the shell.
ln testimony whereof, aiiix my signature hereto.
, FRED NEeWll/IAN.
