Specication of Letters Patent No.V 1,434, dated December 18, 1839.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Jol-IN PRICE, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented an improved burner or apparatus for the purpose of burning pine-knots, light-wood, or other substances of that character when used as a substitute for candles and other modes of obtaining artificial light; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.

I make an instrument resembling a common candlestick, consisting of a vertical tube, or other suitably formed body, placed upon an appropriate foot, or stand, within which tube the material to be burned when split or broken to a proper size, is to be put. Said tube may be of any desired size, but one of two inches in diameter, and from eight to twelve inches in height will be a good ordinary size. Within this tube I usually place a spring slide, to be moved up and down by means of a knob, in the manner of the slide in a chamber Candlestick. Through the sides of the vertical tube I make a number of holes for the admission of air to the burning material; these holes may be half an inch, more or less, in diameter, extending downfrom the top,.to the lowest point on which the burning material rests. This burner I place under a funnel, furnished with a smoke pipe, which leads into a chimney, or elsewhere1 for the purpose of carrying off the smoke; the smoke pipe should be larger in diameter than the tube of the burner. I usually make my burner of metal, but it may be made either of earthen-ware, or any other article which will be' durable, and can be wrought into the proper form.

In the accompanying drawing, A, A, is the vertical tube of my burner, standing on the foot, or base, B. The openings through the ktube for the admission of air are shown at a, a, a; and C is the knob of the slide for raisingy and lowering the light wood.

It has been the uniform practice, hitherto, where pine knots, or analogous substances, are burned for obtaining light, to burn them without t-he employment of any apparatus adapted thereto; but by the simple device above described a much more intense and brilliant light is obtained from a small portion of the material than can be gained from a much larger quantity burned in the ordinary way; the effect of the draft of air through the sides of the vertical tube being similar to that produced by the glass burner in the Argand lamp, a considerable portion of the smoke which would otherwise escape being made to undergo combustion; while what does escape, is carried off by means of the funnel and pipe.

l/Vhat I claim as my invention in the above described apparatus, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l The use of a vertical tube, or other suitably formed body, perforated with holes for the admission of air to the burning pine knot, light wood, or other analogous material, which is to be placed therein, as herein setforth; and the burner set under a funnel and smoke pipe, or other analogous fixture.
