T 0 all 10 hom it m my concern Be it known that I. Ososn RODRIGUEZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago. in the county of (look and State of Illinois. have invented new and. useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valves for use on brake lines steam lines and the like. the principal object of the invention being to provide means for locking the valve in its open and closed positions so that there is no danger of the valve being turned from one position to the other by the jarring of the train or the like.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide means whereby the air may leak through the valve from the closed part of the line when the valve is in closed position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views. and in which Figure l is a side view showing my improved valve as connecting two parts of e pipe line together,

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view with parts in elevation.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the upper of the valve body, with the other parts removed therefrom.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a column.
Figure 6 is a. fragmentary view of the upper part of the handle.
In these views 1 indicates the valve, 2 the pipe leading from the steam or air supply and 3 the pipe for leading the steam or air to the point of use, these pipes being suitably connected with the valve casing, as shown. The valve member 4 is provided with the usual port 5 for permitting the steam or air to pass through the valve casing when the valve member is turned to place the ort in alignment with the end portions 0']: the casing but when the valve member is given a quarter turn the port will be placed crosswise and the passage part closing the passage through the casing this recess will register with the forward part of the passage so that the steam or air in the pipe 3 may pass into said recess and through the groove 9 into the lower part of the chamber, which is occupied by the spring '7 and pass through the vent 10 formed in the blu Thus the air or steam in the closed portion of the pipe line will escape when the valve is closed.
The stem 11 of the valve member projects through the top of the casing and a disc 12 has a square hole in the center there of for receiving the stem and the disc is secured to said stem by the pin 18 passed through the hole 25 as shown in Figure iis disc has its lower face engaging the flat top of the casing and this part of the casing has a recess 14 therein which is onefourth of a circle and the disc carries a pro jection 15 which fits in said groove. This recess and projection limit the rotary move-- ment of the disc and valve member to a quarter circle. A cross shaped projection 16 is formed on the upper face of the disc. A handle 17 is provided for actuating the valve and this handle is provided with circular head 18 of cup shape to fit over the disc 12 and this head is provided with cross shaped opening 19 for receiving the cross shaped projection 12 on the disc. Ears 20 are formed on the head and an ear 21 is formed on the disc, this ear 21 fitting be tween the ears 20 and a pin 22 passing through the ears hinges the handle to the disc. The handle is bent downwardly to conform to the shape of the casing and the inclination of pipe 3. The handle carries a projection 23 on its under face for engaging the locking projections 24- on the upper part of the casing. these projections holding the handle and the valve member against further movement when they are in engagement with each other.
It will thus be seen that when the valve is to be moved the handle must be swnng u iwardly on the pin 22 so as to tree its projection trom the lockingprojections on the casing. Then the handle is turned to rotate the valve to open and closed position. The cross shaped projection 16 engaging the opening 19 will permit vertical movement of the handle in relation to the disc while transmitting the rotary movement of the handle to said disc and valve member.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement oi? the several parts. provided. that such changes tall with in the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is 1. A valve of the class described comprising a casing, a valve member therein for controlling the passage through the casing, said member having a recess and a groove therein for permitting the steam in the torvard part of the pipe line to leak into the lower part of the casing below the valve member and a plug closing said lower part of the casing and having a vent therein.
2. A valve of the class described comprising a casing having a vertically extending chamber therein, a valve member in said chamber, a screw plug closing the bottom of the chamber and having a vent therein, a
spring located between the valve member and said plug, said valve member having a recess in one side and a groove for permitting the steam of the forward part of the easing to leak into the lower part of the cham ber and through the vent when the valve member is closed.
A valve of the class described comprising a casing, a valve member therein, a disc connected with the valve member a handle member having ahead enclosing the disc, means for hinging the handle member to said disc, a cross shaped projection on the upper part of the disc and the head ha ving a cross shaped opening for receiving said projection and interlocking projections on the head and casing for holding the valve in its open and closed positions.

A valve of the class described comprising a casing. a valve member therein, a disc connected with the projecting end of the valve member, a projection on the disc and the casing having a groove therein for receiving said projection, said projection and groove acting to limit the turning movement of the valve to a quarter turn, a handle member having a head enclosing the disc, means for hinging the head tosaid disc and interlocking projections on the head and casing for holding the valve member in open and closed positions.
