Be it known that I, I-IALFTEN EUGENE OLsEN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Chicago, Illinois, have inventedl ay certain new and useful Improvement in Combined Flushing and Sprinkling Nozzles, of which the` following is a specification. i
This invention relates to nozzles in general. but more particularly to those for use in flushing andsprinkling streets.
Generally stated, the object of the invention is to provide` a novel and desirable form of nozzlejof this general character.
A special object is to provide an improved constructionand arrangement whereby the nozzle cangbe opened to facilitate the cleaning thereof. I L
Another object is toprovide an improved construction and combination whereby the nozzle can be used for either ushing or sprinkling a street. y
It is also an object to provide certain details and features of construction tending to increase the general efficiency and4 desirability of a combined flushing and sprinkling nozzle of this particular character. 4 i
To these and other useful ends the invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed, and shown `in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. lis a longitudinal section of anozzle embodying the principles ofthe invention.`

As thus illustrated, the invention comprises a hollow body 1 forming a head, having a hexagonal portion 2, which body is adapted to be secured to the supply pipe o-r coupling connections of a street flushing and sprinkling machine. The formation of the nozzle also involves the upper and lower walls 8 and 4 forming a ichamber 5 therein, which terminates in an outlet 6 in the form of a slot. The upper and lower edges 7 and 8 of this slot are curved, it will 191s. serial No. 234,130.

The nozzle is Vdivided horizontally along the line 9, forminga lap joint, and transversely along the lines l()A and 11, so that the entire outlet portion (with the` slot 6) and the "upper half of the `chamber 5 (the wall 3) are removable as a unit. This removable section ofthe nozzleis held in place on the wall 4 of the head 1 by a vertically disposed or transverse bolt 12 which isfiXed at its lower end in the wall 4, and which extends upward through the chamber 5 and has itsupper end threaded and provided.A with a thumb nut 13 to clamp the wall 3 down in `place on the lower half of said chamber, so that a tight joint is formed all around.
It will be understood that the nozzle can be used in any desired position.y For convenience of illustration, it is shown in horizontal position, so `that the chamber 5 tapers away from the slot v6, l,when viewed from above (Fig. 2), `and tapers toward said slot (Fig. l) when viewed ina direction at right angles to theplane of said slot andthe plane of the dischargey therefrom.
In Figs 4 and 5 the removable section is like the one previously shown and described, but in this case a number of small'holes 14, in place of the slotl 6, are employed, so that the nozzles can be used for ,flushing or sprinkling. Vhenthe vehicle on which the nozzle is mounted is to be used for lushing thev streets, `the outlet portion having the slot 6 will be used; but when it is desired to sprinkle the streets, then theoutlet pOr-.
tion having the ,holes 14 will be used. In this way the two sections are interchangeable on one and the same nozzle body or head.
Removal of either section, of course, opens the nozzle so that it may be easily cleaned.
fha-t I claim as my invention is:
1. A nozzle having an outlet opening, and a chamber in rear of the outlet opening, said nozzle being divided into sections of diffe-rent size and form to provide a removable section which contains said entire outlet opening and one wall of said chamber, as well as a part of the opposite wall of said chamber, thereby to adord access to the interior of the nozzle for cleaning purposes, means secured in an opposite section to connect the nozzle in place, and fastening means to detachably hold said removable section in place.
2. A nozzley having an outletportion, and. a chamberin rear of the outlet, said nozzle said removable section. in-place, the line ot' said division extending f transversely and f halfway through ythenozzle in rear ofk said chamber, then longitudinally of said chamber, and finally' transversely through,v the other half of the nozzle.
3.y A nozzle structure as speciied in claim l, said holding means comprising a single bolt extending transversely through both sections and through said chamber.
4.. A nozzle having an outlet portion, and a chamber in rear 'of the outlet', said nozzle being divided to provide a removable section which includes said entire'outlet portion and one side of said chamber, thereby to afford access to the interior of the nozzle for cleaning purposes, and means to removably hold said removable section in place, said outlet portion being shaped to produce a fan-shaped discharge, with said chamber tapered toward the outletwhen viewed in the' plane of saidV discharge, and tapered awayv from said outlet when viewed in a direction at right angles to said plane, said line ot division extending for a distance in said plane, and for distances at right angles thereto.
5. A nozzle having an outlet portion, and a'chamber in rear of the outlet, said nozzle being divided to provide 'a removable section which includes said entire outlet portion., and one side of said chamber',` therebyl to afford access to t-he interior of the nozzlel for cleaning purposes, and means toremovably hold said removable section in place, the line of said division extending transversely and half way through the nozzle in rear of said being tapered toward the outlet when L viewed in the plane of said discharge, and tapered away from said outlet when viewed in a direction at right angles to said plane, said line of division extending for a distance in said plane, and for a distance at right angles thereto.
7. The combination of a fluid nozzle comprising two permanently united -roppositely disposed walls from between which the luid is discharged from' the end ofthe nozzle and constituting an outlet member, one of said walls 'having a rear end extension, a head having a wall forming with said extensionl a lap joint between said outlet member and the head with a chamber therebetween, and fastening means to ysecure the head and outlet member together, whereby the nozzle outlet is in a Nsingle part and a separable chamber is formed in the rear thereof.
8. A structure as specified in claim 7, said nozzle being formed to produce a fan shaped dischargev inthe plane of said joint.l l
9. A structure as specified in claim 7, said fasteningmeans 4comprising a bolt inserted through the eXtension and the opposite wall ofthe head. v

said head having a round bore leading to said nozzle, andsaidlfastening `means intersecting the yaxis oflsaid bore.
