ARTICLE CARRIER.
Application filed June 7, 1921.
To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoriN S. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane. in Spokane Cormt and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Article Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improve ments in article carriers of the hand type, designed especially for use in carrying milk bottles and convertible for use in carrying packages, boxes etc in connection with a cord or chain. The primary object of the invention is the provision of a package or article carrier of this type which hand supported and particularly adapted for applying to the neck Of a milk bottle. By the utilization of my invention as embodied in the device hereinafter described. the bottle may be held in one hand and the device applied thereto with facility while grasped in the other hand, and the loop for embracing the neck of the bottle may be adjusted to various sizes of necks.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts whereby a comparatively inexpensive device of this character may be manufactured in large quantities and either sold directly to users or given away as advertising novelties, and to this end involves a minimum number of parts of simple construction, rendering the device durable, and facile in maui pulation and use.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the phys ical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the device in use as a milk bottle carrier, showing also in dotted lines the position of parts when applying the device to the bottle.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device in position for use.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the converted carrier applied for use in connection with a cord about a box of fruit, illus trating the manner of carrying a package.
In the preferred form of the invention as illustrated in the drawings I have utilized a bottle B of the type used for delivering Serial No. 475,816.
milk and provided with a ribbed neck N with which the device of the invention designed to co-act when carrying the bottle.
The carrier is preferably made of non rusting metal as galvanized iron wire and the handle,-in the form of a U-shape hail is composed of two pieces 1 and 2 having their ends bent at right angles thereto, fiat toned as at 8 and 4t, and these ends are Welded or soldered together by suitable process or tools as shown.
The rigid flattened ends 3, 4, not only form a handle to the bail, to be held in the hand for carrying the article, but they also form means for receiving advertising matter. or identification data which may be stamped thereon in suitable dies when the ends are flattened to :iorm the hand-grasp oi the handle or bail. 7
At their lower ends these wire pieces 1 and 2 of the bail are bent at an angle at 5 and 6 respectively and then fashioned with curved arms 7 and 8 to form a portion of a loop as shown. One of these arms is bent or offset as at 9, and the ends 10 and 11 of the arms overlap as shown .in Figure 2 to provide a continuous loop, which because of the fact that the wire arms oi the loop are of resilient formation, adapt the loop :for extension or contraction and permit the loop to adjust itself to bottle-neck of various sizes.
A third member 12 is utilized to complete the loop which is flattened as shown and may have stamped thereon suitable inscriptions for advertising or identification. This portion of the loop is also U-shaped, and its curved arms terminate in bends 13,13 which merge into return bends 1 1-. fi l: to form a loop about the handle arms 1 and 2 at their bonds 5 and 6. A right angle bend 15 is formed on the return bends 14:, and these bends 15 terminate in sharpened prongs l6 projected downwardly from the final bends 15, to be utilized for insertion. into the bottle cap or stopper for removing the latter.
It will be noted that the U-shaped portion 12 and the curved arms 7, 8 form a complete loop, and the bends in the U-shape portion 12 provide retaining slots about the lower ends 01 the handle or bail, whereby the loop may it up under the head at the neckor" the bottle in Figure 1, and the bail be utilized as a handle for carrying the bottle The U-shape portion 12 of the loop is supported by its slotted ends on the bail, and the arms 1 2 of the bail may be slipped down through these slots in order that the space between the loop portions may be elongated and in this position the carrier may readily be slipped over the top of the bottle in dotted lines Figure 1., After slipping the device over the bottle neck, the handle 3-i is grasped and the bail pulled upwardly bringing the two portions of the loop up under the opposite sides of the bead of the bottle to complete the circular loop and provide a support for the bottle through its head, the handle being employed to carry the bottle in an upright position without danger of spilling its contents. .lfn this position the bail of handle is retained in a symmetrical position in a vertical plane at right angles to the horizontal plane of the complete loop, and the prongs 16 which also stand in a vertical plane parallel with the handle bars of the bail are :t'rictionally engaged with the bottle neck to aid in holding the device in stable position.
By the utilization of a cord C a package or box F may be carried, in which case the 'ord is passed around the package, over the bends 5 and 6 of the handle bars and be tween these bends and the bends 13 of the loop portion 12. The arms 7 and 8 lie flat onthe top of the box, but because of the prongs 1.6, whose ends rest upon the top of the box, the loop portion 12 is tilted upwardly with the bends 13 at the highest point of this loop portion 12, to form retaining means for the cord and prevent-its displacement from the carrier. As shown in Figure 3 the carrier may thus readily be applied for carrying boxes or packages and the bail or handle utilized in usual manner for carrying the package.
thus supported.
arise The three parts composing the carrier are stamped or fashioned in suitable machines or by the use of proper tools, and as before stated the slotted connection between the handle portion and the loop portion of the device permits ready application of the clevice over the bottle neck at which time the device is held by the hand grasping the handle bar 3-d. The device is retained in place by frictional contact and resiliency of the loop, and in Figure 1 it will be apparent that by first pushing down on the handle or bail and swinging the bail to the right, the connection between the bail and loop may be suliiciently loosened to permit ready withdrawal of the carrier when not to be used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination in a carrier as described with a bail having angularly disposed complementary curved arms of resilient metal and overlapping ends, of a U-shaped loop portion complementary to said arms, said loop portion having return bends forming slots about the junction of the bail with its arms.
The "combination in an article carrier with a bail having a flattened handle bar and angularly disposed curved arms one of which is provided with an oil-set, said arms composed of resilient wire and fashioned with overlapping ends, of a complementary U-shaped loop portion having return bends forming slots about the junction of the bail with its angular arms, and said return bends having downwardly projecting prongs at their extremities.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
