Be it known that l, DANIEL lVnns'rnn Roi-inns, a citizen ofthe United States,l and a resident of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Permutation Padlock, of vwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.v
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in padlocks, and more particularly pertains to padlocks known as permutation padlocks.
lt is one of the primary objects of the 1nvention to provide a permutation padlock in which the use of a multiplicity of tumblers is dispensed with. t
It is a further object of the invention to so construct a padlock that the locking means is positively actuated to release the shackle of the padlock.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide new and improved permutation means for changing the combination of locks of this character.

Referring more particularly to the drawings` the reference character 10 designates the lock housing, and said lock housing is provided with a recess 11 preferably circular in form. Mounted within the lock housing in the ordinary manner is a shackle 12, and said shackle 12 is adapted to be forced outwardly to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 5, by means of a spring 13 surrounding a guide rod 14, and having its upper end en- Serial No. 520,321.
gaged with the free edge of one of the legs of said shackle 12, as more clearly shown in said ligure. (lne of the legs of the shackle 12 is provided with a notched portion 15, and adapted to engage the notched portion 15 to retain the shackle in its closed position, is a sliding bolt or similar member 16. This sliding bolt 16 is mounted in a recess 17 in the upper portion of the vlock and between the openings in which the shackle operates.
Mounted within the recess l1 of the lock housing 10, is a pivoted lever 18, said lever being pivotally mounted by means of a screw 19 or the like, and surrounding said screw is a spring 20, one end of which is received in the lock housingl 10, as indicated by the reference character 21, the other end being attached to the pivoted lever 18, as at 22, which construction is clearly shown in Fig. 3. One end of the lever 18 is received in a cut-out portion 23 in the sliding bolt 16, and the other end of said lever is provided with a rigid pin 24, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The reference character 25 designates a rectangular plate adapted to be rotatably mounted in the front wall of the housing 10, and said plate has an extension 26, by means of which it is mounted. Projecting from the extension 26, is a square extension 27, and mounted on said square extension 27 is a dial plate 28. This dial plate 28 is retained in position by means of a spring washer 29, and a nut 30, which latter engages the reduced screw-threaded end 31 of the extension 27. By this construction it is apparent that as the dial plate 28 is turned, the plate 25 on the interior of the lock housing will be likewise rotated.
Carried by the plate 25 and pivotally secured thereto, as at 32, is a pawl or dog 33, and said pawl or dog 38 is provided with a cut-out portion 34E, which forms a passageway therethrough. This dog or pawl is so positioned with respect to the plate 25,
that as the plate is rotated, the dog or pawl 33 passes into the path of the stationary pin 24 on the pivoted lever 18. One end of the passage formed by the cut-out portion 34: is closed by means of a pivoted pawl mounted as at 36 and normally maintained in position to close the passage formed by the cut-out portion 34; by means of a spring 37. This dog or pawl 33 is provided with a plurality of notches 38, and slightly offset with respect to the end of the pawl or dog 33, is a notch 259. The pawl or dog 33 as more clearly shown in Figs. et and 5, is maintained under normal conditions in alinement with the rectangulary plate 25 upon which it is mounted, by means of springs t() or the like, secured tov the underr` gaged with the notches 38 and the notch and will pass around t0 the opposite side of the pawl i `without actuating the rocking lever 18, W'hen the dial plate is rotated to the left in said ligure, the pin passes through the passage formed by the cut-out portion 34 and engages the pawl 85, which permits oit its passing entirely through'the passage formed by the cut-out portion 34' without actuating the pivoted lever 18.
To open the lock, a definite combination must be known, and said combination is determined. by the relative position 'of the dial platef28 and the rectangular plate 25 upon which the pawl oridog 33 is carried within the lock housing. Assuming the combination be as follows: 30 and 8(5.
lThe dial plate is moved to the rght until the numeral 30 thereon is opposite the iiidicatiiigrmember on the lock housing 10. After this has been done, the parts will be positioned as `shown in Fig. 4,1, in the following manner.: The pawl ordog has moved into engagement with the pin 24- and the notches 38 have successfully engaged with the pin and the latter is finally positionedl inthe notch 39 as showii.- With the parts so positioned, the dial plate is then moved'tothe left tour notches, as shown by the arrow in Fig. 5, which action' rocks the pivoted lever 18about` its pivotal point and slides the bolt 16 out of' engagement with the notched portion l5 ot the shackley l2 and permitsr the shackle to move to the dotted line position shown iii Fig. 5, under the influence foi" the spring 1.3. The lock is then opened;
iVlien itis desired to change tliecombination, the nut 30 is removed after which the dial plate is free to be removed and shi'lfted relative to the squared extension 27 of the rectangularr plate V25, after which it is obvious that a new set ot' figures will have to be employed to properly position the parts to open the lock.
- From= the foregoing.. it is apparent that the present invention provides a new and improved form` of permutation lock kin which the useof a multiplicity ot tumblers is dispensed with, and, at the same time,'a lock which isboth simple in construction and easy oit operation is obtained..y
I claim:
-l. In a lock, a lock housing, a shackle, means for engaging the shackle to retain the shackle within 'the lock housing', means for operating' said shackle-retaining means,
and means for operating the shackle-retainv `ing means operating means to release the shackle, said last-mentioned means' comprising a rotating member 'and' a springpressed pawl carried thereby'.
2. In a lock, a housing, a shackle 'carrled thereby, means for retaining said shackle in position inthe housing, said means compris= ing a sliding bolt, a pivoted lever for operating said sliding bolt, a rotatable member mounted within the housing, and a fpivoted resilient pawlad'apted to operate said f pivoted lever to release the shackle-retaining fmeans.
3. In a lock, a housing, a shackle carried by the housing, a sliding bolt for engagen ment with the shackle to retain the same within. the housing, a pivoted lever for actuating said sliding bolt to release the shackle, a spring-pressed pawl iforoperating said pivoted lever, and a rotating inember carrying said spring-pressed pawl.
