Description

COMB. APPLICATION FILED JAN.
Patented 00$. 31, 11922 k\ H m A iii? than! till GHABLES FBEDEICK BECK, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNDR, BY IVIESNE ASSIGN- IPEENTS, TO ELIAS GLEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Application filed Janna To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that Bren, a citizen of the ing at Newark. county New Jersey, have invented certain 11 useful Improvements in Combs. of the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to an impro in combs, and more particularly handle of combs.
COMB.
1, CHARLES l nnnnion United States, residof Essex, State ot ew and win ch vement to the T he type of comb to which my invention is particularly ap )llfllblfi is a relatively heavy metal comb which. is used to take the curl or kink out of hair. In using the comb to accomplish the indicated purpose the teeth of the comb are passed through the hair substantially parallel to the scalp to straighten the hair initially and then the teeth are turned outwardly in a direction away from the scalp and the back or body of the comb is used to press or further smooth the hair to retain it in straightened condition. In this operation considerable strain is applied to the handle, which in. the constructions at present generally shaftt inserted in the comb body helix encirclin the shaft.
and
employed comprises a a wire it found in practice that with this construction there was not suiiicient rigidity between the handle and the body of the comb to permit the latter to operate efliciently, particularly during that part of the combing operatic n when the back of the comb is pressed against and moved along the head. comb turned relatively to seriously detracting from of the device.
iiith the foregoing in mind, the
the hand.
gal object of my invention is to provide an Frequently the le. this the effectiveness princiimproved construction of comb in which the handle is rigid with the body and the wire helix which surrounds the handle is firmly anchored to prevent turning thereof.
The invention is illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the comb, and
2 a fragment shown in section.
in the drawing,
of the comb with parts 10 denotes the back or body of the comb provided with the teeth 11.
The comb is, above stated, pre
ferably ry 19, 1920. Serial no. 252,450.
made of metal and is relatively wide at the body portion l0 tapering towards the teeth ll. Cue end of the comb body is provided with the substantially cylindrical stub extension 12 from which projects the integral shaft 13 having the header knob its outer end.
Encircling "he shaft 13 is a wire helix 15 forming the handle proper, and having its lower end formed as a ring 16 and its upper end relatively tightly coiled and laid in circumferential grooves 17 in the stub extension 12, these grooves extending spirally about such extension.
It will be noted that the helix is of greatest diameter at its middle part to afford an adequate hand hold, while lower end abuts and is braced by the knob 16 and its upper end is tightly coiled about the extension 1:2 in the grooves thereof. As a result of this construction there is no danger of the comb turning in or relatively to the helix 15 no matter how strongly the comb be pressed againstche head.
I claim.
1. A. comb comprising a body portion having a circumferentially grooved extensiom a shaft formed integrally with and smaller in diameter than said extension and a helix surrounding said shaft and having the coils at one end thereof laid in the grooves of said extension.
A comb comprising a body portion having an integral cylindrical extension provid ed with spiral circumferential grooves, a shaft integral with and smaller in diameter than said extension and having an enlargement at the end thereof opposite said extension. and a helix surrounding said shaft and having one of its ends braced against said enlargement and the coils at its other end laid in the grooves in said extension. one of said coils engaging the end of the extension adjacent the shaft.
In testimony whereof I have aliixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
