HAIR DRYING COMB.
APPLILZM'ION FILED MAR 20, 1919 Patented Jan. 27, H120.
MH/f/VTUR MlL/ Br W/( 7% A TTURNEV ULRICH xonns'rnm, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIR-DRYING COMB.
To all wlwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, ULRICH KORNS'JEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful 1m rovements in Hair- Drying Combs, of wide the following is a specification.
The present invention-relates to improvements in hair-drying combs, and has for one of its objects to provide an implement of this type wherein the hollow back of the 4 comb is rigidly secured to the handle, suitable reinforcing means being provided for preventing a deformation of the said back.
Another object of the invention is to provide an implement of the character specified which is simple in construction, durable, eiiicient in operation, and which can be manufactured on a commercial scale or, in other words, one which is not so diiiicult to produce as to be beyond the reasonable cost of such an article.
With these and other objects in view, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and pro portion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section taken through a comb constructed in accordance with the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2;2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the comb portion of the implement. This combportion is formed of a heat-conducting material, such as metal, and comprises the usual teeth 11 and a hollow back 12. The teeth and back are, preferably, made of one integral piece, the hollow bac being formed by bending the material of the body ofthe comb beyond, the teeth into tubular shape,
iisclearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
One end of the back, denoted by the numeral fliuhd beyond the body portion of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2'7, 1920.
Application filed March 20, 1919. Serial No. 283,900.
comb and is inserted into a bore 14 of a handle 15. This handle is, preferably, of wood or other non-conductor of heat, so that the hand of the o erator will not be burned in usingthe comb Beyond the ortion 13 of the back the bore 14 is reduce ;to a diameter that corresponds to the inner diameter of the back of the comb, a reinforcing, preferably metallic, rod 16 being inserted into the reduced portion of the said bore, said rod also projecting a substantial gistlpnce beyond the handle into the said Over the inner end of the handle 15 is drawn a ferrule 17, said ferrule, comb, handle and reinforcing rod bein united by a pin 18, passing through these $0111 elements. The portion of the reinforcing rod that is disposed within the reduced portion of the bore 14 may be suitably roughened, as shown at 19, for a purpose hereinafter to be described.
Adjacent the ferrule the body portion of the com-b is notched, as shown at 20, the configuration of the said notch corresponding to the curvature of the outer end of the ferrule, whereby the comb body is adapted to abut against the ferrule, clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
A heating rod or core 21 of a slightly smaller diameter than theinner diameter of the comb back is provided. One end of this rod is reduced in diameter, as clearly shown at 22, and inserted into a bore 23 in a handle 24, of wood or other non-conductor of heat, so that the heating rod maybe handled without danger of burning the hand of the operator. Within the bore 23 is disposeda sleeve 25 of asbestos or similar material, said sleeve'covering the reduced and 22 of the core. 21. A pin 26 passes through the handle 24 and the core 21, to properly unite these two elements.
When the comb is to be used for heating, the core 21 is heated to a suiiicient degree necessary for the purpose, and is then comb is then put in place, after which a hole is drilled through the four elements men tioned, and into the said hole is driven the pin 18. The reinforcing member 16, projecting into the hack of the comb, prevents the latter from being twisted, as is usually the case with the constructions heretofore in use. The notch .20 in the body of the comb allows the said body to be brought us close as possible to the ferrule, thus giving the said body a support in the form of an abutment.
What I claim is:
1-. In a hair-drying comb, the combination with a comb having a hollow back, of a handle having a bore in which. a portion of said hollow back is seated, a reinforcing bar in the bore of said handle, said bar projecting into said back a substantial distance be yond said handle, and fastening means passing through said handle, back and reinforcing bar.
2. In a hair drying comb, the combination with a comb having a hollow back, of a handle having a bore in which a ortion of said hollow back is seated, a ferru e on said handle, a reinforcin bar in the bore of said handle, said bar promoting into said back a substantial distance beyond said ferrule. and fastening lTlBdllS passing through said handle, ferrule, back and reinforcing bar, the body portion of said comb being provided with a notch into which part of said ferrule snugly fits. r
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 14th day of March, A. D. 1919 ULRICH KORNSTEIN.
