To all whom e't may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HAZARD, a citizen of the Jnited States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grease Guns, of which the following is a Specification reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in grease uns and is particularly intended for dispensing either grease or oil for lubricating automobiles, though it is equally well. adapted for lubricating other kinds oi? machinery.
My present improvement pertains to that type of grease or oil guns in which its plunger is provided with a toothed plunger rod reciprocated by a hand-operated pinion.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved gear housing for the hand operated gear which engages the toothed plunger rod.
Another object of my invention is to provide a combined gear and plunger rod housing composed of two separate longitudinal parts, which has its inner end within and clamped by the barrel of. the gun and the opposite reduced end of the twopart housing held by a suitable ferrule embracing its outer end, whereby the coinstruction is cheapened and the assembling oi? the parts can be easily and conveniently accomplished.
Another object of my invention is to provide a toothed plunger rod made from sheet metal and bent into rectangular TOUR.
another object of my invention is to provide the nozzle end of the gun with a simple and effective clamp, whereby it can be quickly and reliably clamped in position or released and removed from the gun.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a grease gun which embodies my present improvement.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the upper end of the device in central longitudinal section.
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the lower end of the device, showing the nozzle end clamped in position.

Referring now to the drawings in which similar reference characters denote the same parts, 1 a gun-cylinder carrying at oneend the gear-housing 2, and at its opposite end the nozzle 3. This gear housing is composed of two separate longitudinal parts 2 and 2". The inner end of this housing 2 is enlargelh as shown at T, and {its within the end of the cylinder 1. The inner enlarged ends 7 of the two parts of the housing are provided with flanges 8, fittingwithin the cylinder 1, and this flange has an inwardly extending annular groove 9. Each of the flanges 8 have their adjacent ends provided with cut-away portions 7 whereby they can be separated and placed within the end of the cylinder 1, with the bead 10 of the cylinder in the grooves 9 oi? the flanges 8, the plunger rod 5. the gear 19 and its shaft 11.8 being in position in the lmusing. in this way the inner ends of the two-parts ot the housing 2 are firmly held in position in the cylinder 1. The outer ends of the two parts of the housing 2 have an outwardly extending reduced annular portion 11, which is tightly embraced by a suitable ferrule 12. By means of the ferrule 12 and the heads 9 and 10 the twopart housing 2 wit-h the plunger rod, gear and shaft are firmly held in operative position within the end of the guncylinder 1. The reduced portion 11 forms a housing for the plunger-rod 5. This plunger rod 5 is made from sheet-metal and bent into rectangular form, as shown. and has one edge provided with teeth 13. Each of the two-parts of the housing 2 is provided with laterally extending ears 14- and 15, and the inner sides of these ears are recessed to form a gear-receiving space or housing 16. The ears 15 of the parts 2 and 2 have a laterally extending shaft-housing 17, which forms a bearing for a short shaft 18. A gear 19 is suitably connected to the inner end of the shaft 18 and is in mesh with .the teeth 13 ofthe plunger rod 5. This shaft 18 projects beyond the bearing 17 and carries a suitable hand-operated wheel 20, by which the shaft 18 is revolved in either direction, for the purpose of moving the plunger-rod 5 and plunger 41- in either direction within the cylinder .1. A suitable handle 21 is attached to the outer end of the plunger rod 5, whereby the plunger rod may be quickly moved back and forth within the cylinder without turning the wheel 20 by hand.
By this construction the cup leathers are assembled on one .end of the plunger rod, and the button welded on the other end, and all. assembled in thehousing 2 when it is placed'in the cylinder as before described. This construction enables quick assembling, and they can be quickly and readily taken apart.
Referring to the plunger-rod 5 the meeting edges 5 of the sheet from which the plunger is formed, is at the edge opposite the teeth 1.3.
Referring now to the nozzle end 3, my improvement consists in providing the nozzle 3 with a clamping bail 22, which serves to lock the nozzle to the cylinder end or to release it therefrom, and this is accomplished by the following construction.
The nozzle end of the cylinder 1 is turned laterally outward, as at 23, forming an outwardly extending annular flange. Two ears 2 i extend inwardly from the nozzle 3 and close to or against the out-turned flange 23.
.The ends of the bail 22 are pivoted to the ears 241- and 25, whereby the inner ends 26 ofthe bail form cams for engaging the annular flange 23. hen the bail 22 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the cams 26 engage the under side of the annular flange 23, and clamp the nozzle to that end of the cylinder, there being a suitable packing 27 between the offset portion 28 of the nozzle and the outwardly extending flange 23. hen in this position, the nozzle will be firmly held to the end of the cylinder 1. By turning the bail 22 outward, as shown in Fig. 5, the cams 26 are carried out of contact with the flange 23, whereby the nozzle 3 may be laterally removed from the end of the cylinder or laterally moved over the end. of the cylinder to be clamped thereto by turning the bail upward to the position shown in Fig. 1. For the purpose of assisting in the positioning of the nozzle 3, on the end of the cylinder, the nozzle is provided with a longitudinally extending ear 29, which will engage the periphery of the flange 23, when the nozzle is in the proper position. The ears 24 and 29 therefore serve to properly position the nozzle on the end of the cylinder and before the bail 22 is turned upward to clamp it to the gun cylinder. It will be noted that the ear 29 is positioned between the ears 2%, whereby it performs the function just referred to.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to Secure by Letters Patent is 1. An improved grease gun, comprisin a cylinder, a gear and plunger rod-housing consisting of two separate longitudinal parts recessed at their inner faces to form a gear and plunger rod housing, the gear and plunger rod housing carried above the cylinder with its lower portion clamped therein and means for clamping the upper portions of the housing together.
2. An improved grease gun, comprising a combined gear and. plunger rod-housing, the housing made up of two longitudinal parts and recessed at their inner faces to receive a gear and the plunger, theinner ends of the two parts clamped by the cylinder and a fer rule embracing the outer ends of the two parts.
An improved grease gun comprising a cylinder, a combined gear and plunger rodhousing made up of two longitudinal parts, the inner end of the housing clamped within the cylinder, a ferrule embracing the outer end of thehousing, the inner face of the parts recessed to form a housing for a gear and a plunger rod.
4. An improved grease gun, comprising a combined gear and plunger rod-housing, the housing made up of two separate longitudinal parts, the inner ends of the parts clamped within one end of the cylinder, the outer portion of the housing reduced and having laterally extending ears, the reduced portion and the ears having their inner faces recessed to form a housing for a gear and for a plunger rod.
5. An improved grease-gun comprising a cylinder, a combined gear and plunger rod housing attached to one end of the cylinder, the housing having a longitudinal rectangular, internal, elongated recess to form a plunger rod guide, a plunger rod composed of sheet metal bent rectangular to fit within the housing guide, the edge of the plunger rod adjacent the gear housing having teeth, whereby a'positive engagement of the plunger rod teeth with operating gears in the gear housing is insured.
6. A plunger rod for grease guns made of sheet metal doubled to transverse rectangular hollow shape, one edge of the rectangular rod having gear teeth, for the purpose described.
7. In a grease gun, a cylinder having a lateral flange at its nozzle end, a nozzle carrying a clamping bail having its inner ends provided with cams adapted to engage the upper face of the flange "for clamping the nozzle to the gun-cylinder.
8. An improved grease-gun, comprising a cylinder having at its nozzle end an outwardly extending flange, a nozzle, a bail having its ends intermediately pivoted to the nozzle, the extremities of the bail having a cam surface engaging the upper face of the flange for clamping the nozzle to the gun cylinder.
9. An improved grease gun comprising a cylinder having at its nozzle end an outwardly extending flange, a nozzle having oppositely disposed longitudinal projecting cars at opposite sides of the cylinder flange, a clamping member secured to the said ears and having cam-shaped ends for engaging the cylinder flange, the nozzle having an inwardly extending ear located between the first said ears and adapted to engage the cylinder flange to assist in positioning the nozzle on the end of the cylinder.
10. an improved grease gun, comprising a cylinder, a housing consisting of two separate longitudinal parts, the two parts having depending flanges, the flanges and cylinder having engaging projections and grooves, and the ends or" the flanges cut away for the purpose described.
11. An improved grease gun, comprising a cylinder, a housing consisting of two longitudinal parts, the inner portions of the two parts fitting in the cylinder and having their ends cut away, the said inner ends of the housing and cylinder interlocking, and means for clamping the outer portions of the two-part housing.
