Be it known that l, HUGH W. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to typewriting machines, and more particularly to paper-feeding and controlling devices therefor.
In conducting bookkeeping in which the items are typewritten on loose leaves by means of a typewriting machine, or a combined typewriting and computing machine, it is desirable to print items simultaneously with the aid of carbon-paper, upon a bill or monthly statement of the customers account, upon the customers loose-leaf ledgersheet, and upon a proof-sheet. The lines along which typewriting is to be effected may be and usually are at different heights upon the various sheets, and it is necessary, therefore, to assemble the sheets on the platen with the proper portion of each of the sheets at the writing line of the machine. The adjustments necessary to properly assemble the sheets in the machine have been found to be troublesome and time-consuming, and it is a desideratum to obtain simple and efficient means whereby the sheets may be fed to the platen and subsequently adj usted with reference to each other. Mechanism designed for this purpose is disclosed in my Patent No. 1,294,456, dated 1February 18, 1919.
In the embodiment of my invention herein disclosed, the feed-rolls in engagement with the margins of the ledger-sheet are mounted independently of the feed-rolls engaging the statement-sheet, the latter sheet being of less width than the ledgersheet, which, in turn, is less in width than the proof-sheet. K
ln order to facilitate the adjustment of the statement-sheet `with reference to the ledger-sheet, and both the statement and ledger-sheets with reference to the proofsheet, provision is made of means whereby movement of a finger-piece to one position will effect withdrawal. from effective position of the feed-rolls opposite the statement-sheet, and movement of the linger-piece to a second position will also effect withdrawal of the feed-rolls normally in engagement with the margins of the ledgersheet.
In order to detain or hold the statementsheet when the 4feed-rolls normally co-operating therewith have been withdrawn and the ledger and proof-sheets are advanced by the platen, provision is made of detaining devices arranged for engagement with the margins of the statement-sheet; such devices, as herein disclosed, comprising friction members of rubber or other suitable material. Similar detaining devices are provided for co-operation with the margins of the ledger-sheet.
F or the purpose of controlling the detaining devices, provision is made of means whereby, upon movement of a finger-piece to one position, the detaining devices associated with thel statement-sheet will be made effective thereon, and, upon movement to a second position, the detaining devices associated with the ledger-sheet will be rendered effective thereon.

It follows from this arrangement that direct actuation of the finger-piece associated with the feed-rolls will cause them to be withdrawn from the platen, independently of any movement of the detaining devices, but that actuation of the detainingdevice finger-piece will effect` actuation of the other finger-piece.
Provision is also made of a detent device associated with the feed-roll controlling finger-piece. This detent device is effective on the finger-piece in two different positions thereof, and, preferably, is insufficient in strength to maintain the linger-piece in position against the action of its restoring means, the principal purpose of the detent device being to indicate the positions to be assumed by the feed-roll controlling fingerpiece to obtain certain results.
It will be understood that by actuation of one finger-piece the statement-sheet feedrolls may be released or all the feedrolls may be released without affecting the detaining devices. Movement of the other finger-piece to its intermediate position will, however. not only withdraw the feed-rolls from effective position with respect to the statement-sheet, but will render certain of the detaining devices eifective on this sheet.

The platen 1, of the usual cylindrical type, is carried by an axle 2, journaled 1n end-frames 3 and 4, which' are connected by cross-bars 5 and 6. Finger-wheels 7 and 8 for actuating platen 1 are provided on the ends of axle 2, and suitable line-spacing mechanism may be provided.

Mounted on shaft 9 are threearm levers 12, six in number, the forward arms 13 of which are pivoted at 14 to carriers or yoke-pieces 15 at lpoints intermediate of their ends. The yoke-pieces 15 eX- tend transversely of the platen and beneath the same, andare provided at their ends with shafts 16 and 17, carrying forward feed-rollers 18 and rear feed-rollers 19, respectively. In order to hold the feed-rollers 18 and 19 in effective position relative to the platen, helical springs 20 are connected to cross-bar 5 at one end, and, by means of screws 20a, to depending arms 21 of the threearm levers 12. It will be seen that engagement of thescrews 20 in the coils of the helical springs 20 enables adjustment ofthe tension of the springs.
The shafts 16 and 17, opposite the central portion of the platen 1, are of greater length than the others, and each of them carries three rolls. Only one roll is supported on each of the other shafts.
In order to control the position of the three-arm levers 12 and the efectivenessvof the feed-rolls, shaft 11 is provided with s finger-piece or operating member 22 and with arms 23, secured at different angular positions on said shaft. Upon rotation of shaft 11 by the linger-piece 22, the arms 23 will actuate the corresponding upwardlyextending arms 24 of the three-arm levers 12, and causewithdrawal of the carriers or yoke-pieces 15, and consequently of the feed-rollers 18 and 19 from effective position with respect to the platen. `The an lar arrangement of arms 23 is `such that t e central feed-rollers will be Withdrawn in advance of the end feed-rollers. Provision is also made of detent means comprising a resilient arm 25, fixed on cross-bar 6, ,and provided with two downwardly-facing depressions to engage an offset portion 26 of linger-piece 22. lTreferably, the strength of the resilient arm `25 is insufficient to .maintain finger-piece 22 in position against the urging of the returning means (shown in Figure 1 as a spring 26a coiled about the shaft 11 adjacent the end-frame 3) and the detent device serves principally to indicate the positions to be assumed either for withdrawal of the central feedrolls alone or for the withdrawal of all of said feed-rolls. Y y
It will be noted that the pivots at 14 are situated to the rear of the middle points of yoke-pieces 15. As a consequence of this arrangement the forward rolls 18 are withdrawn from the platen before the rear rolls 19, and, in order to insure withdrawal of said rear feed-rolls, resilient members 27 are secured on cross-bar 5 in position to co-operate with the forward feed-roller shafts 16. As seen in Figure 1, each of `the end members 27 serves to support one end of a shaft 16, while each of the intermediate members 27 supports the ends of two of said shafts and is forked-to better adapt it for that purpose. Obviously, each of the forked members 27 may be replaced by two single members.
A paper-table 28 is pivoted at 29 to forwardly-extending arms 30 of bell-cranks pivoted 0n the shaft 9 and having depending arms 31 connected by springs 32 to the cross-bar 5'. It will be seen that the springs 32 tend to maintain the paper-table in position to co-operate with the platen. At the rear, the paper-table rests floatingly against maarre certain of the parts supported on shaft 11. The depending arms 31 are provided with lugs 38 extending to the rear of the outside depending arms 21, so that withdrawal of the outer feed-rollers will effect withdrawal of the paper-table.
Upon movement of finger-piece 22 to its extreme rearward position, the feed-rollers and the paper-table will be moved away from the platen to permit the insertion of the work, which, in this case, comprises a statement-sheet A opposite the central rollers, a ledger-sheet B having its margins eX- tending beyond the margins of the statement-sheet and in position to be engaged by the outer rollers, and a proof-sheet C extending laterally beyond the edges of the ledger-sheet, carbon-sheets being interleaved between the work-sheets. Upon release of the finger-piece 22, the feed-,rollers and paper-table will be returned to their normal positions.
W'hen the work-sheets are placed in cooperative position with the platen as just described, the lines along which typewriting is to be done may be at different heights upon the sheets. lt will then be necessary to effect a relative adjustment of the sheets. 'lo this end, provision is made of detaining devices whereby the statement-sheet may be held against movement while the ledgersheet and proof-sheet are fed by the platen, or both the statement and ledger-sheets may be held while the proof-sheet is fed.
For the purpose of detaining or holding the statement-sheet A, provision is made of two friction members 34 of any suitable material, such as rubber, carried by resilient arms 35 secured to a. bar 36, Said bar 36 is supported by levers, each of which comprises an arm 37 attached to one end of the bar, a collar 38 loosely mounted on shaft 11, and a rearwardly-extending arm 39. Provision is also made of ledger-sheet detaining means comprising levers 4() loosely mounted on shaft 11 and carrying friction members 41 at their forward ends. The friction members 34 are correctly laterally positioned for engaging the margins of the comparatively narrow statement-sheet A, while the friction members 41 are more widely separated for engaging the projecting margins of the wider ledger-sheet B. A
Control of the detaining devices is effected by means of a shaft 42 carrying at its left end a finger-piece or operating member 43 bent to extend across the front of lingerpiece 22. Secured to shaft 42 are cam arms 44 to engage arms 39 and cam arms 45 to engage levers 40, arms 44 and 45 being so positioned that arms 44 will cause movement of friction members 34 into engagement with the margins of the statement-sheet A, before continued rotation ofthe shaft 42, to operate the cam arms 45. Shaft 42 may be further rocked by finger-piece 43 to bring friction members 41 into contact with the ledgersheet B. lt will be understood that resilient arms 35 serve to compensate for a slight overthrow of the cam arms 44 relatively to the cam arms 45, in order that both sets of friction members 34 and 41 may be brought into eective position. Shaft 42 is carried by brackets 47 fixed on cross-bar 6, and the forward movement of finger-piece 43 is limited by stud 48 mounted in an arm 49 xed on said cross-bar 6.
Operation of the device by means of tinger-piece 43 is substantially as follows: Upon rearward movement of said fingerplece 48, finger-piece 22 will be moved to the rear, and when said finger-piece 22'reaches the position to co-operate with the first `depression in the resilient detent arm 25, the central feed-rollers will be withdrawn from contact with the statement-sheet A, and the friction members 34 will be moved into engagement with said statement-sheet A. llVith the parts in this position, movement of the platen will cause feeding of the ledger and proof-sheets with reference to the statement-sheet. Further movement of fingerpiece 43 to bring finger-piece 22 into position for its offset portion 26 to co-operate with the second depression in the resilient member 25, will cause the withdrawal of the outer feed-rollers from engagement with the margins of the ledger-sheet B, and will effect movement of friction members 41 into engagement with said margins. With the parts in such positions, movement of the platen will effect feeding of the proof-sheet with reference to both the ledger and statement-sheets. The surface of the platen may be roughened to insure proper feeding of the proof-sheet C, and, if desired, provision may be made of the usual rollers supported in position to engage the margins of the proofsheet C.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, ll claim:
1. A paper-feeding device comprising, in combination, a revoluble platen to receive a plurality of superposed sheets diminishing in width from the platen outward, feed-rolls arranged longitudinally of said platen, a pair of friction devices arranged to engage the margins of one of said sheets, and means to withdraw to ineffective positions the feedrolls opposite ,the same sheet, and to effect engagement' of the margins thereof by the friction devices, thereby enabling the feeding'by the platen of a sheet lying beneath the sheet engaged by the friction devices while the latter sheet is held against moveme'nt. c
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination Vwith a revoluble platen around which two superposed work-sheets and an interleaved carbon are fed, the margins of the inner sheet extending beyond the side edges of the outer sheet, of releasable feedrolls to engage the outer sheet to press the sheets agalnst the platen, feed-rolls togengage the exposed margins of the inner sheet to press the same against the platen, and a normally ineffective lfriction device for lightly engaging the outer face of the outer sheet and pressing the latter toward the platen, when the first-mentioned feed-rolls are released, thereby detaining the outer work-sheet to permit the inner work-sheet to be fed relatively thereto by the platen.
3. In a typewritin machine, the combination with a revolube platen around which two superposed work-sheets and an interleaved carbon are fed, the margins of' the inner sheet extending beyond the side edges of the outer sheet, of releasable feed-rolls to engage the outer sheet to press the sheets against the platen, feed-rolls to engage the exposed margins of the inner. sheet to press the same against the platen, a normally ineffective friction device for lightly engaging the outer face of the out/er'` s eet and pressing the lattertoward the platen, when the first-mentioned feed-rolls are released, thereby detainingthe outer work-sheet to permit the `inner work-sheet to be fed relatively thereto by the platen, a finger-piece, and means controlled by said finger-piece for concomitantly releasing the first mentioned feed-rolls and rendering said friction device effective.
4. 'A paper-feeding device comprising, in combination, a revoluble platen to receive a plurality of sheets comprising a sheet of a certain width and a narrower sheet overlying the same, a paper shelf for directing said sheets to said platen, central feed-rolls engaging the narrower sheet, outer feedrolls engaging the margins of the first-mentioned sheet lying outside the margins of the narrower sheet, means whereby said central feed-rolls may be withdrawn from the narrower sheet and the latter held against movement while the wider sheet is fed by the platen, means to withdraw the outer rolls from effective position, and means actuated by said outer roll-withdrawing means formoving said paper shelf away from said platen.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen around which a plurality of superposed work-sheets and interleaved carbone are guided, said work-sheets diminishing in width progressively from the platen outwardly and com prising an outer sheet, an intermediate sheet and an inner sheet, of releasable feed-rolls to engage the outer sheet to press the sheets against the platen, releasable feed-rolls to engage the margins of the intermediate sheet at each side of the Outer sheet to press the intermediate sheet against the platen, a detaining device for the outer sheet comprising friction members to engage the outer face of the latter adjacent its side edges, when the first-mentioned feed-rolls are released, to press the outer sheet lightl toward the platen and detain it while t e intermediate sheet is fed by the platen, and a detaining device for the intermediate sheet comprising friction members movable to engfage the outer face of Vthe intermediate sheet near its side edges, when the first-mentioned and second-mentioned feedfr'olls are released, to press the intermediate sheet lightly towards the platen and detain it while the inner sheet is fed by the platen.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen for feeding a plurality of sheets, including an outer sheet and a wider sheet, thereunder, friction members spaced so as to be capable of engaging the margins of the outer sheet,r friction members spaced for engagement with the margins of the wider sheet, and means for bringing the first-mentioned friction members into engagement with said outer sheet to prevent feeding movement thereof by the platen, and for subsequently bringing said second-mentioned friction members into engagement with the wider sheet while maintaining the first-mentioned friction members in effective position.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a pair of normally ineffective frictional detaining members for engaging the margins of a sheet f on said platen to prevent feeding movement thereof by the platen, another pair of normally ineffective frictional detaining members for engaging the margins of a sheet wider than the first and |underlying the same to prevent feeding movement of this wider sheet by the platen, and operating means including an operating member for successively moving said pairs of frictional detaining members into effective position one after the other, said operating means including yielding supports for the pair of said frictional detainin members first moved into effective position, to assure that both pairs of said frictional detaining members will be moved into effective position by said operating means.
8. In a typewriter, the combination with I a revoluble platen, of a series of feed-rolls arranged longitudinally thereof, supporting devices for said feed-rolls including movable members and springs to maintain said members in position to render the respective rolls effective with' respect tosaid platen, a sl1aft,and arms fixed upon .said shaft opposite said members and arranged at different angular positions, whereby actuation of said members may be eected in succession by suitable rotation of said shaft.
9. In a typewriter, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a series of feed-rolls arranged longitudinally thereof, means to maintain the central rolls in effective position, including levers and springs urging said levers into position to render said rolls effective, similar means for holding the end feed-rolls in effective position, a shaft having arms arranged for simultaneous engagement with the levers -associated with the central rolls, and arms on said shaft positioned differently from said first-mentioned arms to actuate the end-rolls simultaneously and at a dierent time from said central rolls.
10. rlhe combination with a revoluble platen, of means associated therewith to enable simultaneous feeding thereby of a plurality of sheets progressively diminished in width from the platen outward, and feeding of one of said sheets relatively to another, comprising a series of feed-rolls arranged longitudinally of the platen, groups of friction devices, those in each group being spaced in accordance with the width of one of said sheets, and means to release the feed-rolls corresponding to certain sheets, and to move the friction devices of the corresponding groups into engagement with said sheets, thereby enabling one of said sheets to be held against movement, while another sheet is being fed by the platen.
11. lin a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen sheet-feeding means comprising a feed-ro for engaging an outer sheet on the platen, feed-rolls for titl engaging the projecting margins of a wider sheet underlying the outer sheet, a frictional detaining device for engaging the outer sheet and lightly pressin it toward the platen to detain it while t e wider sheet is shifted by the platen, a pair of frictional detaining devices to engage the margins .of the wider sheet, while a work-sheet underlying the same is shifted by the platen, and feed-roll-release means to release from the control of the platen each work-sheet detained by said detaining devices.
12. A paper-feeding device comprising, in combination, a revoluble platen, a set of feed-rolls for maintaining a sheet in operative relation with said platen, a set of feedrolls to engage the margins of a sheet of greater width and underlying the firstmentioned sheet, a pair of friction members to engage the margins of the first-mentioned sheet, a pair of friction members to engagev the margins of the second-mentioned sheet, means for withdrawing the first set of feedrolls from the first-mentioned sheet, .and subsequently the other set of rolls from the second-mentioned sheet, and mea-,ns for placing the first-mentioned pair of friction members lin engagement with the irst- 75 mentioned sheet, and subsequently the second-mentioned pair of friction members in engagement with the second-mentioned sheet.
13. A paper-feeding device comprising, in combination, a revoluble platen, a set of feed-rolls for maintaining a sheet in operative relation with said platen, a set of feedrolls to engage the margins of a sheet of A greater width and underlying the ,iirst- 85 mentioned sheet, a pair of friction members to engage the margins of the first-mentioned sheet, a pair of friction-members to engage the margins of the second-mentioned sheet, means for withdrawing the first set of feedrolls from the rst-mentioned sheet, and subsequently the other set of rolls from the second-mentioned sheet, means for placing the first-mentioned pair 'of friction members in engagement with the first-mentioned sheet, and subsequently the secondmentioned pair of friction members in engagement with the second-mentioned sheet, and means whereby actuation of the friction-member moving means will effec-t actuation of the feed-roll-withdrawing means.
14. rlhe combination,with a platen, of a set of intermediate feed-rolls for engagement with a sheet on the platen, a set of outer feed-rollsY for engagement with the margins of a second sheet underlying the first and extending beyond the edges thereof,` detaining means to prevent feeding of the first-mentioned sheet by the platen, detaining means for said second sheet, means 110 to withdraw said intermediate feed-rolls from eective position, means to withdraw said outer feed-rolls from effective position, means to render the detaining means for the first sheet e'ective thereon, and means 11e :for rendering the detaining means for the second sheet effective thereon.
l5. ln a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen around which two superposed work-sheets and an interleaved carbon are guided, of releasable feedrolls to engage the outside sheet to press the sheets against the platen, feed-rolls to en 4 gage the inner sheet to press the same against the platen, and a friction device tat movable to engage the outer face of the outside sheet, when the first-mentioned feedrolls are released, to press the latter sheet lightly toward the platen and detain it while the inner sheet is advanced by the platen. le@

17. The combination with -a revoluble platen, of means including an intermediate feed-roll for engaging a sheetcarried by said platen, outer feed-rolls for engagement with the margins of a wider sheet underlying the first, a shaft, means whereby actuation of said shaft to one position will withdraw said intermediate roll from Ysaid platen, means whereby a further rotation of said shaft will withdraw said outer rolls from effective position, and a detent device to determine the positions assumed bysaid shaft when said intermediate roll only has been withdrawn and when said outer rolls have also been withdrawn.
18. The combination with a vrevoluble platen, of means including an intermediate feed-roll for engaging a sheet carried by said platen, 'outer feed-rolls for engagement with the margins of a wider sheet underlying the first, a 4pair of detaining devices to engage the margins of the first sheet, a pair,
of detaining devices for engagement with said second sheet, means including-a fin erpiece whereby said intermediate roll wil be withdrawn when said finger-piece is in one position, and the outer rolls will be withdrawn when said finger-piece is in the second position, means including a second fingerpiece for successively rendering the pair of detaining devices effective, and means whereby movement of the first-mentionedy finger-piece to withdraw the feed-rolls may be effected. independently of the second finger-piece, but movement of the second finger-piece to render the pairs of detaining devices effective will operate said first-mentloned finger-piece.
19. The combination with `a revoluble platen, of means for controlling the feeding by the platenof sheets associated therewith, comprising friction members arranged for engagement with the margins of a sheet on said platen, friction members arranged for engagement with the margins of a second sheet underlying the first, levers for controlling all of` said friction members, and cam members for actuating said levers, the cam members for actuating the friction members associated with the first sheet being positioned in advance of the others, and provided with dwell portions to enable an additional movement thereof without further actuation of the corresponding levers.

In a typewriting-'machinm iny combination, a revoluble platenl to receive a plurality of superposed worksheets including a wider underlying sheet of which the margin projects laterally beyond a narrower top sheet, a normally ineffective friction-member movable into frictional `engagement with the narrower top sheet to ho d the same stationary while the wider underlying sheet is fed forward or backward by the platen, a similar normallytineffective friction-member movableinto ffictional engagement with the projecting margin of the wider underlying'y sheet for hold- Aing this sheet also stationary whilel another sheet underlying this said wider sheet is fed forward or backward bythe platen, and
manually-operable means including a fingerpiece for lfirst moving the first-mentioned friction-member into effective position in engagement with said narrower top sheet and for subsequently by continued movement of said fin er-piece moving said lastmentioned frictlon-member into leffective position in engagement with the projecting margin of said underlying wider sheet While maintaining the first-mentioned frictionmember in its effective position in engagement with-said narrower top sheet.
21. In a typewritingmachine, in combination, a revoluble platen to receive a plurality of superposed work-sheets includlng a wider underlying sheet of which the margin projects laterally beyond a narrower top sheet, a normally ineffective friction-member movable into frictional engagement with the narrower top sheet to hold the same stationary'while the wider underlying sheet is fed forward or backward by the platen, a similar normally ineffective friction-member movable into frictional engagement with the projecting margin of the i wider underlying sheet for holding this sheet also stationary while another sheet underlying this said wider sheet is fed forward or backward by the platen, and manually operable means including a finger-piece for first moving the first-mentioned fricl tion-member into effective position in enagement with said narrower top sheet and Laaeaie its eeetive position in engagement 4With. saidv narrower top sheet, said manually operable means including a yielding support for said inst-mentioned friction-member to lassuma that both of said friction-members will be moved into effective position by said manually-operable meane.
