Description

A. B. HUBAHD.
REENFORCED JOINT.
APPLICATION man luNE 6.1921.
L., Patented Oct. 241, 1922?.
l l l 4To all .Qc/tom it may] concern.'
Fatainted @sin 2da salaire Be known that l, ARCHIBALD B. Hn-
ing` at (incinta, county ot li/lontgomery and titateiot Pennsylvania.,havefinvented a new f :and ruietnl .improvement in "Feentorced Joints, of which thei'ollowing is a full,
clear, and exact description, reference being` `hadfto the accompanying' drawings, which.
form a part of this specification.`
This invention relates to an` improved means for reinforcing the joint between.
two adjacent composition board members,
or card board members, and more particu- `la-rl for reinforcinc' the 'oint between card boardboX or,
adjacent members oit' a container. j
The precise nature of myy invention will `be best v.understood by reference tothe accompanying drawings, which will now `be described. it being premised however, that various changes maybe made in the details j ot construction without departing from the j spirit and scope of `myinvention, as defined"` in the appended claims.
Figjh of vthe drawing; is a perspective view ot' one side oit' oneform of joint made Y .in accordance with my invention.`
` thereof.
.Fiw 2, is a similar view of theother side `used `in making the` oint.
l0 is a perspective view showing how the staples are bent about `the anchoring., devices.
ln these drawings 2 and 3 designate the two members connected to eachother by the reinforcing devices.
l The joints shown vin Figs. 1, 2j., 5, 6 and 7 are reenforced bv be plain as shown fore bending, as shown in Fig. 5, and then learearr j' incarnato nonnen, `orfoo,#ravira` rnnnsrnvnmn;
. j j `other,`to the nano, a citizen .otthe United States, resid- .consists of a perforated sheet means of staples shown inl Figs; S and 9, havinnbody members l `and leg 5 at each end thereof, which extends at right angles to the body. These legs may in Fig. 8, or crimped as .i shown `in Fig. 9. i
Where possible l` reinforce 'the jointl be` j @dit or" nnnnroacnn sortir.
Application filed June 6, 13121. Serial No. 475.227.
bend the numhprs 2 and 3 relative to each positions? showninFigs. l to 41,6 and 7. i" i t vin.Ereinforcing joints as above described, the cardboard isiirst scored in theusual dotl and dash line in Fic'. 5, if the members 2 and: 3 `areiormed `from anintegral piece, ortwo piecesare placededgeto edge. The legs 5- of the staples are then passed through the bodies of members 2 and 3 and are bent f. about anchoringy devices 7 so as to forni crimps in the legs as shown. The one memberv is then bent to a position at right angles .to the other along` the line6,or along` the adjacent edges of the members 2 and 3, and
when bending, the staples as well as the anchoring means are simultaneously bent when either of said membersextcnd across the junction between the members 2 and 3. j j
in Figs. l and 2,`t,he anchoring `means 7. extends back and forth across the junction, and in this case both staples and reinforce are bent when the one member is bent rela tive tothe other. In Figs. 5 and 6 the anchors 7 consist of straight wires, which extend parallel to the line oi? the junction betweenthe members.
The anchor Z in the iorm shown in Fia. `'l' metal plate, through which the legs 5 dicated at 8, so asto increase theresistance against withdrawal of the staples. ln the `remainder of the forms shown this resistance is increased by kinlzing` the legs about the wire anchor.`
.it desired. this resistance maybe further increased by corrugating the legs, as indicated in Fig).
ln the term shown in Figs. 3 and t the joint is reentorced by an Aexternal plate 9 through which the staples eXtend`.` ln this form `the staples do not extend across the jmani'ieralong the line 6, as indicated by the f extend, and in which'case l prefer to kink. the legs as 1njunction betweeny the members 2 and 3, there being one set-fot staples which extend through. the` plate `9` and the member 2, while another set extends through the plate 9 and the member 3.
The plate anchor 7` of Fig. lfand the plate 9 loit Figs. 3 and 4f, reinforce the .joints against compression stresses, as they form columnslwhen inI a vertical position and beams when in a horizontal position.
`The advantages oi?v my invention result from the provision of a reentorced joint choring,` means or legs being as well as the proVlSlOIl 01"? the members,
, means vtor reinforcing the joint vagainst compression and extension. stresses, both trans-l lVerse and longitudinal.
I claim: l. A. reinforce Jfor a. joihnt betfveen two members having staples provided with legs which extend through the members, and. anchoring means with which the legs are crimped. f
2. A reinforeefor a joint between two membersyeomprising devices having body portions and legs which extend through the members end 'anchoring means on the sides olf the members opposite the sides on which the bodies of the devices are located` with which the legs are crimped.
.it reen'liorced joint between two box forming;` members, comprising devices huw ing bot y port-ions on one side of euch member and legs which extend through the menlbers, and anchoring devices on the sides oli the members opposite the sides engaged by said body members, said legs being; crimped into engagement with seid :nnchoring devices, one of said devices extending across the joint.
In testimony of which invention, I have hereunto set my hand, at Philadelphia, on this day of June.r 1921.
ARCHIBALD B. I-IUBARD.
