SPARKING RATTLE.
Application led November 14, 1921. Serial No. 515,084.
phoric metal 23 is placed in each of the sleeves 22 and is spring pressed against the face of the disk. 7
A convenient means of placing pressure upon the pyrophoric metal is shown in the formof a spring 211 having four arms, one of each of the arms extending into a slot 25 1n one of the sleeves 22 and bearing upon the end of the pyrophoric metal. To anchor the spring the central portion thereof is shown as perforated and pressed over the projecting. end of the shaft 13, through which end a cotter pin is passed, preferably with a washer between the pin and the spring.
When the handle lil is grasped and the rattle is whirled friction between the roughenedsurface 2O and the pyrophoric metal will throw olf a shower of sparks. the sparks being provided inthe form shown at four different points.
To cause the rattling sound a springis shown secured to a side of the block and pressing against the gear wheel 16.
in the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5, 6 and r(the frame 28 is formed in one piece bent upon itself lat 29 and a handie 3() carries rigid therewith a rod 31 which is ournaled in the two ends of the frame 28 being prevented from longitudinal move-y ment by studs 32 and 33.
Rigidly secured to the rod 31 is a gear 34e meshing with a pinion 35 upon the shaft of whichl pinion is mounted a gear 36 meshing with a pinion 37. The shaft 3S carrying pinion 37 projects through the frame 28 and carries rigidly secured thereto an emery wheel 39. lf desired the emery wheel may be produced by providing a disk of wood with a facing of einery paper. The shafts of the pinion 35 and gear 36, as well as the shaft 38, are journaled in the frame 28 as shown.
A piece of pyrophoric metal 110 may be mounted upon the end of a pin l1, which pin is rigidly secured to the end of a spring 42 anchored upon the frame 28. A convenient means of attaching the spring l2 to the frame is that shown, wherein a piece of material 43 is struckiupwardly from the middle of the frame and the spring Ll2 is riveted to said projecting portion.
Vihen the handle 30 is grasped and the frame 28 is whirled thereabout the wheel To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that i, Louis V. rinoNsoN, ay citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and .State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Sparking Rattles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to toys of the watch` mans rattle type. and has as an object the provision of such a toy that Awill produce a shower of sparks while the sound is being produced. i y
illustrative embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. .l is a plan view;
Fig. 2is a side view; l j
F ig.v 3 is a `detail section on line3-3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow;
Fig. l is a detail section on line` lf-L1 of Fig. 1;
Figs. 5 and 6 are a plan and a side view 27 13 F ig. T is a detail bottom plan view of the device shown in Fig. 5, partly broken away.
As shown in Fig. l, the invention comprisesa .frame made up of members 10 and 11, joined together by means of a bolt 12 and by each being screwed to a block 13. The block 13 provides weight to cause the device to spin about the handle 14e when whirled in the well known manner common to watchmens rattles. Rigid with the han die 14 is a rod 15 which is journaled in frame member 11 and an inwardly turned extension 16 of said frame member.
Rigidly secured to the rod 15 is a gear wheel 16 which meshes with a pinion 17, said pinion being rigidly secured to a shaft 18 journaled in the frame member 11 and in the frame member 10. Also rigidly secured to the shaft 18 is a disk 19 provided with a roughened surface 2O on one face, which roughened surface `may comprise an annular member of emery paper cemented to said disk. l
Av cross member 21 is mounted upon the frame member 10 either formed integral therewith or secured thereto as shown in the drawing, and sleeves 22 are mounted in the frame member and in the ends of the cross member and project through these parts into the proximity of the face of the disk 20. f To produce sparks a small portion of pyro- 39 Will be rapidly revolved, causing` friction upon the element l0 and therefore producing sparks.
To produce ay sound when the toy is operated a toothed Wheel all maybe rigidly secured to the rod 3l and a spring 45 secured to a bar 4G comes into contact with each tooth as the Ywheel ed revolves, thereby producinp,- the Well known rattling sound. The bar 4G may be formed 01E such a Width as to be rigidly secured to both sides of the traine member 28, and thereby form an effective spacing; device for the end of the frame 28 "ying the mechanism. ltlinor changesI may be made in the physical embodiment ol" the invention Without departing from its spirit. f
l claim as my invention: i
l. A, toy comprising. in combination,` a Watchmans rattle, a disk mounted upon said rattle, means to revolve said disk when said rattle is operated, and means mounted on said rattle and cooperating With said disk to produce sparks `when the rattle is operated. i
i3. el. toy comprising, in combination, a Watchmans rattle, a disk mounted upon said rattle, means to revolve said disk when the rattle is operated.I a roug'liened surface carried by said disk, a pyroph'oric element spring pressed against said surface whereby sparks Will be produced when said rattle is operated.
3. A toy comprising', Vin combination. a Weight, frame members having one end oi each secured to opposite sides of said Weight and having their vother ends connected, a
handle carrying a rod journaled in the end of the thus formed frame, a gear Wheel mounted to revolve with said rod, a spring pressed against said gear wheel to cause sound -When the gearwheel is operated, a shaft journaled in. said frame, a pinion carried by'said shaft meshingwith said gear Wheel, a disk rigidly mounted upon said shaft and having a: roughened surface, apyrophoric element springl pressed against said roughened surface to produce sparks when the toyvis operated. Y
l. A toy comprising, in combination, a frame, a disk mounted in said trame having a roughened surface, means to revolne said disk when said toy is operated, a. sleeve mounted in said frame adjacent said roughened surface and having a longitudinal slotI therein, a pyrophoric element loosely seated in. said sleeve, and a spring projecting into said slot nressine' said element a'Uainst said' roughened surface.
5. A toy comprising, in combination, a frame, a disk mounted in said trame, means to revolve said disk When said toy is operated, a plurality of sleeves mounted insaid frame each sleeve having a longitudinalslot, a pyrophori'c 'element loosely seated in each sleeve, a springliaving a plurality `of arms; the end or' each arm projecting into one of said slots and pressing the pyrophoric ele# ment in each sleeve into engagement '-ytith said roughened surface, vmeans toholdthe center of said `springin fixed relation to said frame.
