2 Claims.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in musical toys for mounting in cribs or play pens of infants, and more particularly to animated toys which will become more apparent from a consideration of the accompanying drawing, constituting a part hereof.

In the drawing Figure l is a front elevational view of an animated musical toy embodying the principles of this invention;

Fig. 2 a cross sectional view taken through the vertical center of the toy, partially in elevation; and Fig. 3 a cross sectional view in a horizontal plane transversely of Figure 1.

Referring to the drawings, numeral l designates a drum shaped housing having a circular face 2 and a circular rear wall 3 in which are journaled a plurality of shafts t and 5 on which are mounted gear wheels 5 and '1 that interact with a pinion 8 on a central shaft 9. Mounted on the latter is a barbed drum ID in which the tines 9, project to engage the leaves 12 of a tuning bar 83, which is shown in Fig. 3 as leaves of graduated length to produce variations in tunes as the leaves are actuated by the tines H of the drum It. The drum i9 is actuated by a pulley 14 mounted on shaft 9 having a circular groove 85 in which is mounted a chain I5 consisting of beads which, when pulled, causes the drum E9 to rotate and actuate the musical leaves 52 to produce musical sounds.

Mounted on the front end of shaft 9 is a disc ll which has painted thereon nostrils i8 and mounted on the ends of shafts 4 and 5 are discs !9 and 29, respectively, having slitted portions 2! simulating eye slits. Mounted on the shaft 9 is an eccentric disc 22 that engages the arm 23 of a lever pivoted at 24 on a lug extending on the inner face of the Wall 2. The projecting end of the lever designated by the numeral 25 is in the shape of a tongue that extends through a slot 25. Ears 21 are provided for receiving attaching cords 28 for fastening the toy on a cradle or in a play pen or bed, and the face of the toy is printed with lines to simulate eyebrows and .whiskers and a smiling mouth, so that the whole structure resembles a cat.

The operation of the above described device is briefly as follows.

When the infant pulls on the beaded chain It, the pulley 95 rotates shaft 9 and drum II! which produces the musical sound as described. Simultaneously the eccentric 22 actuates the tongue 25 to make it reciprocate vertically, and the wheels ll, l9 and 29 revolve to give to the entire toy a comical expression attractive to infants.

Although one embodiment of the invention has been herein illustrated and described, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the principles herein set forth.

We claim:

1. In an animated musical toy, a drum having facial or other characters on one side thereof, a plurality of shafts mounted transversely of the face of the drum for rotation therein, said shafts having gear Wheels interacting to simultaneously subject them to rotary movement, a pulley mounted on one of said shafts having a beaded chain constituting an endless loop disposed therearound and extending outside and beneath said drum, and a musical implement mounted on the pulley shaft to be actuated by the chain to produce musical sounds, the shafts having the facial or other characters mounted on th end thereof to subject them to movement when the pulley shaft is actuated by the beaded chain.

In an animated musical toy, a drum having facial or other characters on one side thereof, a plurality of shafts mounted transversely of the face of the drum for rotation therein, said shafts having gear wheels interacting to simultaneously subject them to rotary movement, a pulley mounted on one of said shafts having a beaded chain constituting an endless loop disposed therearound and extending outside and beneath said drum, an eccentric mounted on said pulley shaft and a lever pivotally mounted on the drum having one arm engaging said eccentric and the other arm projecting beyond the face of the drum, and a musical implement mounted on the pulley shaft to be actuated by the chain to produce musical sounds, the shafts having th facial or other characters mounted on the end thereof to subject them to movement when the pulley shaft is actuated by the beaded chain.
