Abstract

1,274,137. Mechanically animated toy. KOHNER BROS. Inc. 21 Aug., 1970 [16 Feb., 1970], No. 40287/70. Heading A6S. A toy comprises a stationary frame 12 carried on straps 14 for suspension from the sides of a cot and includes an animatible activity member, e.g. a miniature roundabout, 18, mounted for movement in the frame and connected via an operating mechanism to an handle 48 adapted to be gripped by both hands of an infant whereby the member is animated by pulling on the handle. The operating mechanism incorporates a device effective to store energy during pulling of the handle and to release such energy on release of the handle to restore the handle and member to their original positions. This device may be a spiral coil spring connected to a bobbin on the base of the e.g. roundabout, a cord from each end of the handle being wrapped round the bobbin for operation thereof (Fig. 4, not shown). Alternatively the handle may terminate inside the roundabout in a helically twisted strip which engages a slot in the base of the roundabout and wherein a helical compression spring acts to return the handle (Fig. 5, not shown). The frame may take the oval form shown and be provided with small bells 80 which are struck by the figurines 78 of the roundabout as they swing outwards when the roundabout rotates. Additional handles 84 may be rotatably mounted on the frame for an infant to pull himself up with.
