Be it known that LEWALD E. STURK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Cannon, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a toy cannon and has for its principal object to improve upon the structure shown in Letters Patent Number 1,358,125 issuel to me on November 9, 1920. Another important object of the invention is to provide a novel spring hammer which is effective forimparting momentum to the projectiles so as to force them through the barrel of the cannon. Another object of the invention is to improve upon the projectile receptacle so as to provide the same with a slanting bottom whereby the projectiles will be delivered to the rotary drum and properly aligned with the barrel of the cannon.
A still further object of the invention is to generally improve upon toy cannons of this nature by providing a device which will be extremely simple and eilicient in construction, reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
\Vith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more'fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the toy cannon embodying my invention, a portion thereof being broken away so as to show the interior of the barrel and the projectile casing.
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken through the device on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the device, a portion thereof being broken away.
Figure. 4 is a transverse section taken sub stantially on the line 4l-4L of Figure 3 and Figure 5 is a detailed view showing the construction of the rotary drum.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the cannon is mounted on the wheels 1 by having their axles pass through the support 2 which may be designed in any preferred manner so as to appear similar to the cannon having the trail 3. A cylindrical receptacle 4- is mounted on the support 2 and a barrel 5. This barrel 5 is mounted so as to slide longitudinally of the cylindrical receptacle 4 which is open along its upper end as is shown in Figure 2 so that when the barrel is pulled forwardly projectiles may be passed through this opening into the receptacle. This receptacle is provided with an inclined bottom 6 which is substantially Vshaped in cross section and leads to an opening 7 in the rear wall thereof. A rotary drum 8 is mounted on the bar 9 which is supported in the rear of the cylindrical receptacle 4t and is provided with a plurality of annular arranged pockets which are adapted to be placed in registry with the opening 7 and the barrel 5 which are arranged. diametrically opposite each other preferably.
A spring hammer 11 is fixed at one end to the support 12 for the rotary drum 8 and is curved so as to form a loop 12 and an arm 13 extends upwardly therefrom. The bolt 9 passes through the arm 13 intermediate its ends and also passes through a bow-shaped spring 14c which has its ends bearing on the arm 13. The upper end of this bow-shaped spring 14; is formed with a pair of spaced oll'set lips 15 which embrace the arms 13 as shown to :njlvantage in Figures 3 and 4-.
A series of teeth are arranged in a circlc on the drum 8 one tooth being situated adjacent each pocket in the drum as is indicated to advantage in Figure These teeth are provided with one slanting edge and one straight edge. is adapted to engage the hammer so as to force it away from the drum at its ends until it meets the straight edge when it is released and will snap back to itsoriginal position and a lug 32 is provided on the hammer for projecting into the pockets of the drum so as to force a projectile therefrom and through the barrel 5. It will be noted that a finger 33 extends from the upper terminal of the arm 13 for engagement with these teeth 20.
In order to rotate the drum I have fulcrumed a lever 35 on the bolt 9 so that the same will be positioned between the bowshaped spring 14 and the nuts 36 and this lever 35 extends through the guide frame 37 and is normally held in a horizontal position by a spring 38 which is attached to the sup-- port 12 by an eye bolt or in any other suit able manner. It will be seen that by de- The slantin edv-e ment of parts may be resorted to without departing from the scope of this invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is r 1. In combination, a container having a longitudinal opening in the top thereof, a barrel having a bore therethrough, slidably mounted directly below and contiguous to the opening of said container, means for delivering projectiles from the container in alignment with the bore and means for toremg the pro ect1le when in alignment with the bore therethrough.
2. In combination, a-container having a longitudinal opening in the top thereof, a barrel having a bore therethrough slidably mounteddirectly below and contiguous to the opening of said container, a longitudinal bar mounted in the rear end of said container, and adapted to extend a substantial distance beyond the same, a rotary drum provided with a plurality of annular arranged pockets, mounted on said bar, a spring hammer mounted on saidbar, a bowshaped spring mounted on said bar, the ends of said beuwshaped spring adapted to engage the spring hammer, an actuating means to rotate the bar mounted near the end of said here, said bow-sl1aped spring being situated on the bar between the spring hammer and the actuating means.
