Description

E. T. HURLEY.
CLAMP FOR ARTISTS, CANVASES.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 17. 1920.
Patented @ct. l7, 1%22.
UNHTED STATES PATENT @FFHQE.
CLAMP FOR ARTISTS GANVASES.
Application filed March 17, 1920.
To all whom may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD T. HURLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, .in the county of 5 Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps for Artists Canvases, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to provide clamps for holding artists canvases that will preclude possible contact between the painted surfaces when the clamps are applied. This and other objects are attained by the means described herein and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a clamp embodying my invention in an extended position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale of two canvases in condition for transportation and being secured by a clamp.
Fig. 3 is an end view on an enlarged scale of an attached clamp.
Fig. 4; is a perspective view on reduced scale of canvases secured by several clamps. My invention consists of two clamps pivotally attached at one end, and having thumb screws adapted tosecure the frames holding canvases.
Clamps A and B are hingedly attached by pivot C. The thumb screws on and b are employed to secure the frames D in the clamps. When the canvas holding frames are to be placed in the clamps, the clamps are extended to assume a position as shown in Fig. l, thereby avoiding possible contact between the wet surfaces. After one or two clamps have been attached to the same sections of the canvas holding frames the canvases and clamps are moved upon the pivots C until the canvases assume a parallel position as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. Additional clamps are then attached to the opposite edges of the canvas holding frames as shown in Fig. 4. A strap or carrier can be attached to the clamps through the openings Serial No. 366,488.
a and 72 for convenience in carrying the canvas.
These clamps may be utilized to engage and secure two sections of stage scenery.
What I claim is.
1. A holder for artists canvases compris ing two clamps, a pivbt connecting said clamps and means for spacing and holding in parallelism a pair of canvases.
2. A holder for artists canvases comprising two U shaped members, a pivot connecting said members, means on each member for positioning a canvas thereon, the mem bers being adapted to be moved to an extended position to permit positioning of the canvases thereon and to be moved to con tracted positions whereby the faces of the canvases are untouched and retained in spaced relation to one another.
3. A holder for artists canvases comprising two clamps, each having means to position a canvas thereon, and means hingedly connecting the clamps, whereby the canvases may assume a relatively extended position and a relatively contracted position having their opposed faces spaced from one another and extending in substantial parallelism.
4-. A. holder for artists canvases comprising two clamps each being of a structure such that each clamp may be mounted on the inner and outer edges of the frame of an artists canvas and leave the canvas face free from engagement with any part of said clamps, and a hinged connection between the clamps whereby the clamps may be caused. to assume an extended position for mounting each clamp on separate canvases and to as some contracted position for holding the canvases in a relation such that the faces of the canvases are disposed in spaced parallelism.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto sub scribed my name this 13th day of March,
EDWARD T. HURLEY.
