Application filed November 16,` 1213. Serial No.
To all 'w hom may concern. j
Be it known that We, filmt PnNwnLL and HARRY lil. BROWN, citizens ot the United States, residing at Eldorado, in the county of Butler, 5i-tate oi Kansas, have invented a new and useful idjuster, oi which the iollowingl is a specilication,
rlhe subject ol? this invention is an Vadjuster for the polishedrod ot an oil punip.
A main object oi the invention is the provision of an adjuster which will not score` or injure the polished rod. j
Another object olf the invention is the provision ot means 'lor drawing the polished rod into adjusted positions.
rlhe invention also contemplates generally improving the eonstruction and enhancing the utility oit adjusters.
lWith the foregoing and other objects in view, which Will appear as the Vdeseription proceeds, the invention resides in the conibination and arrangement oit parts and in the details oi construction hereinatter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment oi" the invention herein disclosed can be inado within the scope oi' what is claimed Witiiout departing troni the spirit olf the invention.
A practical structure tor carrying out the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a view in side elevation oi an adjuster constructed in accordance with the invention, the saine shoivn in place on the end ot a Walking beam;
Fig. 2 is a vieuT in iront elevation o'l the saine;
Fig. is a bottom plan view oit 'the adjuster, ren'iote parts removed;
Fig. 4: is a plan vieuT oit` a moditied torni oi elamp;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation et the saine;
Fig. G is a plan vieu7 oit a further modilisation oi' the clamp; i
Fig. 7 is a view in side elevation oi the saine.
Reterringto the drawing by numerals of reference A. fragment oli the usual Walking beain through which the punip oi' an oil Well is operated is shown at l, and upon the beam is mounted the adjuster board 2, which is held in place by the usual T-bolt 2. The ends. of the Walking1 beam and adjuster board are biturcated and grooved in the usual manner for the reception oi' the head Speeilieation ol Letters Patent.
Patented liteb. il., 19251.
of the adjuster tively.
The adjuster consists in a head 5, formed `with an eye 5 in which hook may be in sorted `for the purpose of handling the adjuster. The head 5 has trunnions il which rest in the aliningjI grooves formed in the beain and board and support the adjuster.
fdeeured to the head 5 in any suitable manner, and depending therefrom, is a hollow rod t3 which is formed With a longitudinal. slot l". The slot 7 slidably receives the apertured lug il which is lsvviveled or otherwise secured to the head end of the polished rod 9, which rod is slidable in the hollow rod G. j
The eirtending` apertured lug' 8 permits a hook or rope to be attached thereto so that the polished rod i'nay be moved to various adjusted positions without it being necessary ior the worlnnen to inount the Walking benin. t this beam is a considerable distance above the derriek door, a large amount olf time is lost in adjusting the rod, and the operation is accompanied by more or less danger to the Workmen.
(in the lower end oil? the hollow rod 6 is mounted a lleshaped clainp l() which strad dles the rod ll, and the extending ends of which may be drawn together by a clamping screw il ttor the purpose of actuating' the elainp l0 to con'ipress the end of the hollovv rod and bind it tirinly against the polished rod 9. A set screw l2 threaded into one oit the.extending` ends oit the clanip lll, with its end adapted to thrust against the other entendine; ond ot the elainp and :torce the ends apart and open the clamp. A
and its trunnions, respecportion, i3, ol the yoke of the clamp is inade thin so that the clamp niay be readily sprung.
ln the modified torni oi? clanip shown in Figs. fl and 5, the clanip comprises. clamping bars l0?, `which are drawn together at one end by the clamping bolts ll and, at the other end, by the clamping bolts 131.
ln the torni shown in Figs. 6 and?, the clamp comprises bars 10b, which are hinged together at 13b, and may be drawn together at their other ends by the clamping bolts 11b.
lroin the foregoing it Vwill be seen that there is no holding device Which will score or mar the polished rod and cause leakage about the same Where it passes through thc stu'tlingi` box.
lt isY thought that the operation of the device will be amply apparent from the oregoing description Without an extended and special. explanation thereof.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and seek by Letters Patent, 1s
An adjuster of the class described, comprising a head, a tube having one of its ends received in the head, the other end of the tube having a single longitudinal slot defining conipressible arms, the edges of the slot being parallel throughout the entire length of the slot, the Slot terminating short of the head, a polished rod in the tube between the arms,y a clamp comprising approximately parallel melnbers having seats receiving the arms oft' the tube and located nearer to one end of the clamp than to the other end thereof, means for connecting said members at that end of the clamp which is nearest to the seats, a tightening device connecting said members at that end ot' the clamp which is niost remote from the seats, and :1 thrust element cooperating with said lnelnbers and located between the tightening device and the seats, the thrust element con stituting means for opening the clanip, the polished rod being provided with an outstanding lug received slidably in the slot when the clamp is opened by the thrust element, the lug being of suliicient width to be, gripped between the arms when the clamp is contracted by the tightening device, the lug having an opening whereby the rod may be sus )ended when the clamp is loosened.
n testimony that we clailn the foregoing :1s our own, we have hereto aiixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
