RIVET HOLDER.
lApplication filed February 26, 1921. Serial No. l148,225.
To ZZ al1/mm t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD HAHNEMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Kaulrauna, .in the county of Outagarnie, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain newl and useful Improvements in Rivet Holders, of which thev following is a specification. y
This invention relates to improvements in rivet holders particularly adapted, though notV necessarily limited in its use for holdingrivets for boiler flue sheets.
Heretofore considerable difficulty and inconvenience has been experienced in riveting boiler flue sheets in position in that portions of the water space are very small and narrow, rendering it diiiicult to insert a rivet holding bar or jack thereinto, lwith the result that oftentimes it is necessary to insert several pieces of material or shims to build up a brace between the outer wall or shell ofthe boilerand the headoi: the rivet. To overcome these diiliculties and objections and to provide an improved rivet holding device which may be readily inserted into a small space and hung upon the iue sheet or other support, is one of the objects of the present invention.
A Jfurther obj ect is to provide an improved device of this character which 'is adapted to be actuated by fluid pressure and which device also operates to draw together the.
parts that are to be riveted. n
A further object is to provide an 1mproved, simple, durable, cheap, compact and portable device 'of this character, which may be readily handled and which will be effective and eiicient in operation.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear the invention consists in the features of novelty in substan tially the construction, combination and ar! rangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimedandshown in the accompanying drawing illustrating: y
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged .vertical sectional. view.
Figure f1 is a sectional View taken on line 41E- 4, Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a view taken on line 5-5, Figure.
Referring more particularly to the drawing thel numeral 10 designates the iiue sheet which is to be secured in position and together with the fire boxwall 11, and the numeral 12 designates the wrapper sheet of the boiler which extends around or over the fire box.`
The flue sheet 10 is provided with the usual circumferentialv Iiiange 13, against which the wall 11 rests and to which wall the flue sheet is to be secured.
The yrivet holder embodies a body'portion consisting of telescoping members one of which members 14, is in the form of a cylinder and the other member 15, comprises a piston which operates in the cylinder. The cylinder and piston may be of any desired size and configuration, and are adapted to be held in position by means of suitable itrame works so that when fluid is admitted into the space 16, between the piston 15 and the head of the cylinder by means of a pipe 17, to which a flexible pipe 18, is connected, the. piston and cylinder will be separated. A suitable valve 19, is provided for controlling the admission of the iiuid into the cylinder. i i
The framework for the'supportl of the piston and cylinder may be of any desired structure but preferably embodies two frames or portions. @ne iframe 20, is connected with the cylinder 14, to extend beyond the end thereof and the extremity 21, of the portion 20, is preferably tapered or reduced as shown. Connected with the end 21 of the frame 20 is a hook device 22, the portion 23 of whichfis swiveled in a suitable bearing 24, so that vthe hooked extremity ing block'24, to move the hook to any desired position.
A re-enforcing brace 26, may be provided for the framework 20, it desired;
the block and suitable fastening nuts 35,.
are secured to the shank on each side of the j block 'for holding the anvil in position. A
ln Figure 3, the rivet holder is shown in its extended position,..th=at isvvith the piston 15 at substantially the limitofaitsin- Ward Imovementinto thecylinder 14. I'
In use, the hook 25, is hooked into-fone of theiiue openings v537, in the vlfluesheet. 10, asishoivn more clearly in Figurew2, vand the anvil 32, is extendedlover the :edge ofthe Wall .11, so .ass to engageandrest against the head ,of a .rivet 38.* When .the` parts are in thisposition, fluidy is admitted yinto the space 16, in the cylinder 14, so. 'as to separate ,the cylinder and piston. 1 This'actionwill tend to.` .draw the zhook. 125., and the anvil 32.towvard each lotherf soi-as :to clamp or hold the head ofthe 'rivet yzagainst the outside ofthe Wall .11, and vthe fluid. pressure in .the cylinder is controlledfby the valve 19.
Vhen the .parts are in this position, thev rivet 38'is upset by theuse-ofthe ordinary -:pneumatic lhamm'er operating Lon itlre end of the rivet, the anvil 32, holding the rivetin position during this operation.
After: the rivet hasbeen thus set, the de-- vice may Kbe' removed by -releasingth'e fluid from the cylinder-16, Which-will permit the hook 25`and fanvil 32'to he separated, iafter which the `devicefmay be .readily detachedl and placed. in position tov upset another rivet.
l/Vith this improved construction it will be manifest that it is not necessary to v-place a .rivet holding bar or `other implement yin the Water space `as 'the apparatus is hung upon the flue sheet softliat the anvil 32jis the 'only portion of the apparatus -which proj ect'sain'to 1 the narrow( space thereby .ren-
dering it lpossible to facilitate the. upsetting otth-erivets.
stay `hol'ts or any fother "suitable: support. 1
.A handle 40, may ibefprovidedfon the de vice by means of which it may-be freadily transported:
While thelpleterred termici? the inventienf The free extremity rof the has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, Within the scope of the claims, Without departing, fromv the spirit-of. this invention.
Vhat is claimed as new is 1. A rivet holder embodying a cylinder having an open end, a plunger operating in and-.extending beyond the cylinder, an anvil 'connected with and extending beyond the endeoffonefoii theparts, a hook .like element swiveled to the other part, said hook and anvil being disposed. adjacent yopposite ends oi? the. said cylinder'I and plunger, a Huid supply pipe discharging between theuplun-v gerI and cylinder, and a valve tor `controlling thesupply of fluid, said cylinder and plunger operating under' the influence ofthe fluid to causev the hook like` elementand anvil to be drawn together.
2. Ay rivet holder comprising .a body structure. embodying telescopi-ng elements, a frame vconnected with each lof 1 the elements, the frame of'each element extending over and projecting .beyond .the end of theother element, whereby when the'said .elements arey separated the trames-will be drawn together,` a supporting lhook likeelement .connected with one of the said frames, an anvil'conne'cted With the other frame, saidfhook and anyilbeingdisposed adjacent opposite ends of the telescoping elements, means for delivering a fluid between the telescoping yelements to separate them, and means for controlling at will the said fluid.
3. A. rivet holder. comprising a body structure embodying telescoping elements,
I a frame/connected vwith each ofthe elements,
the frame oi. each element extending over and projecting beyond theendoff the otherelement, whereby when .the said Vvelements are separated the Jtrarne-s will be drawn to-l gether, a supporting hook like element having an axially rotatable connection` with one. of the said frames, an anvil-connected with the other 'fi-ame, said hookand anvil being disposed adjacent opposite. ends .ofthe telescoping elements, means for delivering a fluid between the telesccping elements to separate them, and .inea-ns yfor controlling at. Will'thesaid fluidi` 4.1A rivet holdercomprising a body .strue- `ture embodying -gtelescoping ele1nents,
