CENTRFUGAL SEPARATOR. Application filed January 21, 1920. Serial No. 352,992.
To all fw kom 'it may conce/Mi Be it known thatl, AnoLrHn Gennaio, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Centrifugal Separator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the type of centrifugal separators utilized in the dyeing and cleaning industries for removing surplus liquid from fabric articles to accelerate the drying process.
The object of the present invention is the provision of a machine of this character in which the rotary element .is supported in such manner as to be properly balanced and facilitate convenient access thereto as is necessary in placing articles therein or removing them therefrom.
`With this and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds the invention comprises' the novel features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view, partly broken away of the impro-ved centrifugal separator.
Figure 2 represents a fragmentary sectional view through the bottom of the container illustrating the support for the lower portion of the rotary separating element.
liigure 3 represents an enlarged fragmentary sectional View of the side wall of the rotary member showing the manner of connecting the same with one of the arms of the drive shaft.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views the numeral 5 indicates a container preferably of cylindrical form and adequately supported in position for use. The cylindrical container is provided with a bottom 6 and an nturned top edge 7 designed to prevent the liquid contents from splashing out of the container during the rotary movement of the separating element at high velocity. A substantially inverted U-shaped supporting frame S is attached at diametrically opposed points to the container 5 and the horizontally disposed web portion thereof snpports a depending bearing 9. A horizontal shaft 10 1s Journaled at one terminal in the bearing member 9 and its opposite terminal vwith one of the vertical legs of the U-shaped supporting member 8, being provided outwardly of the supporting member or frame with a pinion 11 meshing with a relatively large gear wheel 12 carried by the crank shaft 13 which is journaled in said member of the frame 8 and is provided with a hand crank whereby the machine may be manually operated.
The inner terminal of the horizontal shaft 10 is provided with a bevel gear wheel 15 which meshes with a relatively small bevel gear wheel 16 mounted upon the separator drive shaft 17 which latter is journaled at its upper extremity in the horizontal web portion of the U-shaped member 8 and is connected at its lower terminal with the medial portion of an inverted U-shaped yoke 18, the extremities of which are bolted or otherwise rigidly secured as indicated at 19 at diametrically opposed points to the ange of the rotary separating element 20. An annular strip 31 having an inwardly directed flange is secured to the top edge of the container 2O to prevent accidental loss of the articles contained therein during operation of the machine and the rotary member 2O is arranged in spaced concentric relation within the container 5.
Owing to the construction and arrangement of the yoke 1S, the driving connections for the separating element 20 are located exteriorly thereof, affording a receiving chamber of maximum size and permitting convenient deposit of articles therein or of the removal of such particles therefrom.
rlhe bottom of the rotary member 2O is provided with a concentric aperture receiving a headed screw 22 and an internally threaded bearing member 23 is threaded upon the extremity of the screw 22 and is maintained in spaced relation to a bearing member 2d bolted or otherwise secured to the bottom 6 of the container 5 by bearing balls 25.
In the operation of the machine the articles from which it is desired to remove Water or other liquid are deposited in the rotary member 2O and the latter is rotated at a high velocity by the application of manual power to the hand crank 14 or by the application of motor power to the pulley 26 provided on the terminal of the horizontal shaft 10. Centrifugal force acting upon the articles contained in the rotary member 20 during operation ot the latter causes a compression of such articles against the Walls of the member 20 and'the liquid is carried out through the numerous perforations 27 provided in the side Wall of the rotary memberv and is retained in the container 5.
lVhat I claim is:
l. A centrifugal separator comprising a container, a rotary separating element the container below the flange, a bearing interposed between the lower portions of the container and rotary element maintainingthe same in spaced relation, an inwardly directed flange carried by the upper edge of the open end of the rotary element, and driving means for said rotary element disposed entirely outside thereof, said driving means comprising a drive shaft and arms carried thereby and connected with the rotary element at opposed points. v
3. A centrifugal separator comprising a liquid container,` an inverted U-shaped frame connected therewith, a rotary separating element mounted in said container, :ti lation reducing bearing interposed between the bottom of the container and ,the rotary element maintaining the same in spaced relation, and driving means for the rotary element partially supported in the frame and disposed entirelyoutside ofthe separator, said driving means comprising a shaftprovided with oppositely curved arms connected with the rotary element at diametrically opposed points. In testimony whereof, I aHix my signature hereto. y o
ADOLPHE GORNEAU.
