SUBMARINE BOAT.
Application led January 14, 1921.
To all fwhomit may con-cern.
Be it known that we, KURT voN SANDEN, residing at Kronshagen, near .Kieh G ermany, and HANS TEGHEL, residing at lKiel, Germany, both citizens of the Republic of Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Submarine Boats, ol which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to submarine boats and has for its object to produce boats of this kind which when submerged at the greatest depths practically possible will, notwithstanding, offer absolute reliability against the pressure-resisting hull being crushed. l.
This object is attained in accordance with the present invention by the fact .that said pressure-resisting hull is itted with a far greater number of square frames than was hitherto customary in shipbuilding and submarine boat construction; the distance between the individual square frames being reduced to such an extent that at its maximum it will be equal to only about one and onehalf times the value of the mean proportional between the mean diameter of the pressure-resisting hull and the wall thickness thereof.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates, by way of example, two embodiments ott. the subject matter ot the present invention and in which:
Fig. l shows diagrammatically the first embodiment in a longitudinal section through a submarine boat,
Fig. 2 is a crossfsection, on an enlarged scale, on line 2 2 in Fig. l, looking from the left,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through a part of the pressure-resisting hull, drawn to the same scale as Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4l is a like view of the second form of construction of the pressure-resisting hull.
Referring to this drawing, the submarine boat disclosed in Fig. 1 comprises vin the customary manner a pressure-resisting hull A of circular cross section and a thin-walled outer shell B, enveloping the said hull and having the necessary vessel shape. Within the pressure-resisting hull the mean diame- Serial No. 437,322.
ter of which is D while its thickness of wall is al, there are arranged a plurality of square frames C. In accordance with the invention the space between the square frames C, measured from the moulding-edge of the one trame to the moulding-edge of the adjoining frame, is so diinensioned that it will be equal to or less than lfm/Dd.
The 'form of construction illustrated in Fig. 4 merely diieis from the one abovedescribed by the fact that there are always arranged between two square frames disposed at a greater distance apart and having an angular cross section, two square frames having a horizontally lying rectangular cross section. However in this case too, the distance between one frame and the other is equal to or less than Lw/Dd. The arrange- 0 ment of alternately high and low frames will be found to embody the advantage, relatively to the construction illustrated in Fig. 3 in which the frames are all of one height, that the available room is utilized to an improved degree.
Vhereas submarine boats the pressure-resisting hull of which has been designed in accordance with the methods of calculation hitherto usual and in which the square frames are spaced as usual, will, when submerged at lower depths even than originally calculated for be crushed by the plates of the pressure-resisting hull being bulged-in between the square frames, the boatsA constructed in accordance with the present invention will be able to successfully withstand the pressure consequent upon any depth of submersion practically entering into consideration.
Claims:
l. In a submarine boat a pressure resisting hull, frame members for said hull, said frame members being spaced so that the distance between them vwill at maximum be equal to one and one-half times the value of the mean proportional intermediate the mean diameter of the pressure-resisting hull and the wall thickness thereof.
2. In a submarine boat a pressure resistin@ ing hull, a frame for said hull embodying members of low and high prole, the members of low profile being arranged between two members of high profile spaced a greater The foregoing specification signed at Kiel, distance apart, the distance between said Germany, this 25th day of November, 1920.
frame members being at maximum equal to KURT VON SANDEN.
one and one-half times the value of the mean DR. ING. H. TECHELL 5 proportional intermediate the mean diame In'presence of.-
