UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM M. KIMBALL, OF ROCHESTER, NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 14,317, dated February 26, i856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM M. KIMBALL, of the city of Rochester, county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a full and accurate description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in preventing the overflow of the oil which takes place in common lamps and burners, and in adding brilliance to the llame by preventing the horizontal action of the air thereon.
In the drawing hereto annexed, in which thc burner of a locomotive-lamp is shown in section, double size, Ais the outer case of the burner, \V is the wick with its attachments, and B are the movable top, to which are attached the wires for supporting the glass.
My improvement consists in the annular recess C formed in said movable top, which rccess prevents the capillary attraction which would otherwise cause the oil to rise between the outer case and the movable top, and conjointly with the beveled edge E of the top prevents and overflow of the oil.
To prevent the horizontal action of the air, which has a tendency to cut olf the flame, as it were, I place a thin metallic ring or disk about a halt an inch above the wick. The llame passes through the hole in said disk, and, becoming thoroughly mixed with the air before combustion, gives a large and very brilliant light.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The recess O, operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
