Description
A. 0. GATES.
Gas Burner. M No. 17,674. Patented June 30, 1857.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASA D. GATES, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
GAS-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,674, dated June 30, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA D. GATEs, of Binghamton, in the county of Broome, in the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Burning Gas Through a Conical Cylinder or Tube; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a gas burner in such a manner as to produce a better light with less gas than those now in common use.
By placing one of my conical cylinders or tubes on an ordinary four-foot gas burner it will produce as much light as a six-foot burner will do Without it. Therefore I am saying one-third of the gas and at the same time getting as much light as from a six-foot burner. My burner is also more simple in its construction and can be ut in any common burner; therefore can e furnished to consumers at much less than other patent burners.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 is a plan; letter A the burner in the form of a thimble and fitted loosely on the common burner, as represented in Fig. 3, letter E. This thimble 1s fitted on to the standard E without the ordinary process of screwing it to its place. The chamber for the gas in this burner, as represented in Fig. 2, letter C, is much larger than in the ordinary burner, so that the gas is impregnated in a manner with atmos heric air before combustion. By placing tiis thimble upon the ordinary burner When burning, you will find it will increase the intensity of the light full one-third Without additional burning of gas.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Attaching to the top of or slipping over the usual burner the conical or cylindrical supplemental chamber burner, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
ASA D. GATES.
