UNITED STATES THOMAS NOBLE, 01F QUATH-IASKI COVE, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
PUMP.
Application filed June 11,
1 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS NOBLE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Quathiaski Cove, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in pumps, and the object of the invention is to provide a means whereby the leverage available for operating the pump plunger is auto matically increased as the stroke proceeds, enabling the pressure to be increased as the resistance becomes greater and thus the pump is rendered much more powerful than ordinary pumps and being easy to operate individual effort is reduced to the minimum, so that it is particularly adaptable and eflioient for running board hand tire pumps on automobiles, pumps in power plants where expansive gas is pumped or for pumps of an analogous character and purpose.
This object is attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which the figure shows the practical application of the invention.
The illustration shows a double-acting arrangement; it will be understood, of course, that the device may be used equally well with one pump only.
1 indicates a pump cylinder of any ordinary type in which is the usual plunger litted with the pump rod 2. At its outer end the pump is pivotally connected to a station ary bracket 3 by a pin at so that it may oscillate thereon and the free end of the pump rod 2 is connected to a pin 5 secured to the upper end oi a rocking rod 6 the lower end of which is pivotally connected to a bracket 7 secured to a base 8, which base may be, for instance, fastened to the running board of an automobile, and the pin 5 is slidably mounted in an arcuate slot 9 formed in the operating handle or lever 10 at a point intermediate its length to secure the desired leverage, the lower end of the handle being pivoted on a suitably secured pivot pin 11.
1921. Serial No. 476,737.
The foregoing description applies with equal force to the construction on the opposite side of the handle or lever which is simply a duplication of that already de scribed for a double acting pump, and similar figures of reference are accordingly used to indicate the similar parts. Should a compound pump be desired one cylinder is made of smaller diameter than the other, or the position of the slot in the handle is changed and a pipe line with a non-return valve is connected from the larger cylinder to the smaller and to the outlet from the latter.
The operation of the pump will be readily understood as it will be seen that movement of the handle 10 back and forth reciprooates the plunger rod 2, causing the cylinder 1 to oscillate and the pin 5 to travel along the slot 9 governed by the rocking rod 6, and thus a steady increase of leverage as the stroke proceeds with corresponding increase of power is automatically obtained which would not be possible were the pin not so movable and not so governed.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A pump comprising an oscillating cylinder, a plunger operable in the cylinder a rod carried by the plunger, a pivotally mounted operating handle provided intermediate its length with an arcuate slot, a pin fixed to the said rod and disposed for sliding movement in said slot, and means independent of the lever for governing the movement of the pin in the slot.
2. A pump comprising an oscillating cylinder, a plunger and a rod therefor, an operating handle pivotally mounted at its lower end provided intermediate its length with an arcuate slot, a rocking rod pivotally mounted at its lower end on a suitable pivot, and a pin extending slidably through said slot connecting the ends of the plunger rod and the rocking rod.
Dated at Heriot Bay, B. Q, this 14th day of May, 1921.
THOMAS NOBLE.
