(GRANTED UNDER THE PRQ'VISIONS 3F A61 91? MARCH 3, 1921, 4;]. SIit'l. 11., 1313.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, EMTIi HorFMANu, a citizen of the German State, residing at tologne, lw iarienlnlrg liindenallee 62. in the State of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for the Connection of Metal Strips and the like (for which I have filed applications in Germany, March 29th, 1916, Patent Number 297,521; Austria, July 3rd, 1916, Patent Number 75,880; Switzerland, July 3rd, 1916, Patent Number 742,043; Netherland, July 8th, 1916, Patent Number 3,231; Hungary, July 28th, 1916, Patent Number 71.533; Denmarlnl/Iarch 11th, 1918, Patent Number 23,911; Sweden, March 13th, 1918, Patent Number 45,602; Norway, March 14th, 1918, Patent Number 29,184; Czechien, Slop-- tember 29th, 1919' Belgium, October 21, 1919; Luxemburg, bctober 1st, 1919, Patent Number 11,524; France, October 21. 1919; Great Britain, April 25th, 1920; Poland, April 26th, 1920), of which the following is a specification.
It is known to connect metal-strips :for tying of packages or parcels and overlapping pieces of sheet-metal by punching tongues from the strips or pieces, said tongues being adapted to clamp and hold said strips or pieces together. This method of joining allows to dispense with rivets, special clamps and the like.
The present invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a tool for the execution of this known method of connection. This tool is constructed of two members in such a manner, as to secure a tight connection of the strips or pieces by two closing movements of the tool-niembr-zrs (tongs).
The drawing shows:
Fig. 1 the opened toolmembers or tongs in side-elevation,
Fig. 2 the closed tool-members or tongs in side-elevation and partly in a longitudinal section of the tongs mouth as well as two crossed strips after performing the joint,
Fig. 3 a plan view of the tongs 01 Fig. 2,
Fig. 1 a plan view of two crossed and joined strips,
Fig. 5 a plan View oi two longitudinally joined strips.
In the u Jer elon ated )art (1, of the tonesmouth is pivotally arranged on a pin (Z a 7) at the .:losing inm'einent oi the tongs,
mouth. Within the tongsnnouth there is fixed on the part Z; a permanent or adjustable guide or stop-piece b for the strips to be joined, the upper part L of said guideor stop-piece being provided with a guide slot for the punching-die c.
With the tongs it is possible to oin crossed (Fig. 1) or longitudinally (Fig. 5) superposed strips as well as superposed pieces of sheet metal. For this purpose the strips are laid into the tongsmouth in the manneras shown in Figs. 2 and 3 by moving the opened jaws of the tongs-mouth sideways so as to grip the strips. l i hen the strip or strips lying parallel to the tool-members are in contact with the guide-piece t (Fig. 3) the jaws are closed and the tongs c of the punching-die c are forcing two tongues 9 (Fig. 2) out of the strips which tongues have an outwardly curved form and are pressed against the strips with the front part a of the tongsunouth by a second movement of the jaws, attaining thereby the tight connection without rivets, clamps or the like.
In Figs. 1 and. 5 g are the openings left by the forced out tongues. With the crossconnection (Fig. 4) the two tongues are forced out at such distance that the crossing strip f becomes partly cut out on both sides. These cuttings serve to avoid a lon gitudinal displacement of the strip 7 by the interlocking of the tongues g into the said cuttings after the peritormance ot' the joint.
1 claim:
1. A tool ior uniting metal strips, comprising opposed pivoted jaw members, a punching die movably mounted in one jaw member, a guide carried by the other jaw member for guiding the punching die and metal strips to be united, whereby in the movement of the jaws together the die will be operated to unite the strips.
2. A tool for uniting metal strips, comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaw members, a punching die pivotally mounted in one jaw member for punching tongues in metal strips, a guide carried by the other jaw member for guiding the punching die and the metal strips to be united, and means on one of the jaw members adapted to cooperate with the other jaw member for flattening and uniting the tongues punched by the punching die.
3. A tool for uniting metal strips, comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaw members, a punching die carried by one of said members, means for guiding the punch ing die, means carried by one of the jaws for guiding metal strips to be united, and an element carried. by one of the jaws for cooperation with the other jaw, whereby the punching die will punch tongues in the metal strips and the said element will flatten and unite said tongues in its cooperative relation with the jaw.
4. A tool for uniting metal strips, comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaw members, a die member pivotally mounted in one jaw member having a pair of points formed on the end thereof adapted to punch oppositely formed tongues and metal strips in the operation thereof, and a guide member for the punching die and the metal strips, one of said aw members being formed with a lateral projection for cooperation with. the other jaw adapted to unite the tongues punched. from the metal strips in the movement of the jaws.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature,
EMIL HO FFB IANN.
