Description

Feb. 24, 1931. J. BAYER DEVICE FOR SEALING BALE TIES Filed Aug. 1, 1928 Patented Feb. 24, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOSE! BAYER, F BARMEN, GERMANY DEVICE FOR SEALING BALE TIES Application filed August 1, 1928, Serial No. 296,842, and in Germany April 19, 1928.
The object of the present invention is to provide means whereby metallic bale and like ties can be efiectively sealed in a single operation, and the invention consists in depressing the edges of the overlapping tie ends so as 'to form corrugations thereon, and in bending the e ges of two oppositecorrugations so as to double the metal upon itself.
This sealing operation may be carried out by means of a tool having two pairs of slotted jaws adapted to cooperate with lugs on the supporting head for corrugating the edges of the overlapping tie ends, an additional pair of jaws, held betweenthe slotted jaws and pivoted eccentrically relative to the latter, be-
ing adapted, by a final movement, to effect the doubling over of the engaged metal.
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a side view of thesealing tool show- 2 in the elements in their normal positions,
ig. 2 is a side view of the operated tool, one of the slotted jaws being omitted,
Fig. 3 is a view at right angles to Fig. 1, Fig. 4: is a bottom view of the tool, Fig.5 is a top view of a joint which has 7 been scaled by means of the tool, and
Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the joint. The overlapping ends of a metallic bale or like tie are sealed according to the invention by depressing the edges so as to form a plurality of corrugations, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and finally bending the edges of two opposite corrugations so as to double the engaged metal upon itself, as shown at a in Fig. 6. I v
This sealing can be effected in a single operation by means of the tool illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4. The tool comprises a head 1 to which two pairs of jaws 3 and one pair of jaws 3a are pivoted. The jaws 3, which are the principal ones, are arranged on pitjaw 3w for each lever, the levers being controlled by a pivot 10 arranged to slide in slots 11 in guide rackets 12.
The overlapping tie ends are inserted, with or without a sealing sleeve 7 between the head 1 and the jaws. The latter, on being operated by means of levers 5, force the tie against the head and cooperate with the lugs 2 for corrugating the edges. The edges of two opposite corrugations a'(F,ig. 6) are finally engaged by the jaws 3a and bent over so as to double the engaged metal upon itself.
While the sealin can be efiected in a single operation, the deformation of the tie produced thereby ensures a perfectly rigid connection of the two ends.
I claim:
1. A tool for sealing metallic bale and like ties comprising a head, two pairs of slotted jaws pivoted to said head so that the jaws can be used for forcingthe overlapping tie ends against the head, lugs carried by the head so as to enter the slots of the jaws when the latter are operated and crimp the edges of the tie, and an additional pair of jaws held pivotally' between said former jaws, and means for givin said additional jaws a final movement to ouble the engaged tie portions upon themselves.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the additional jaws are mounted eccentrically relative to the first-mentioned jaws.
JOSEF BAYER.
ots 8, and each pair has one of the jaws 3a r between them. Four lugs 2 on the head 1 cooperate with the jaws 3 which act as dies and which are for this purpose provided with slots 4 for the reception of the lugs. The jaws 3a are mounted on eccentric portions 9 of the ivots 8 and perform a wider stroke than the aws 3. The jaws are all connected to a pair of operating levers 5, two jaws 3 and one
