To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CANUTE H. Fons- BERG and CARL W. Fonsnnne, citizens of the United States, residing at Patton, in the county of Ca'mbria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scraper Attachments for Various Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

It is the purpose of the present invention to provide an improved knife or scraper, for attachment to various brushes, such as scrub brushes, stove brushes, paper hanger brushes and paint brushes and the like, for the removal of dirt and other foreign matter, before scrubbing, or polishing stoves, or before hanging paper, and before painting or otherwise decorating surfaces.

Very often when scrubbing, painting or performing work of a similar character, it is necessary to remove some foreign matter, dirt or the like that would if left would not present a neat appearance.

Therefore the present invention further aims to provide an improved knife or scraper applicable to the handle of any kind of brush, and the blade of which can be easily and conveniently opened at any time, for the purpose of removing dirt and other foreign matter.

Still another purpose is the provision of a knife or scraper attachment of this character comprising a folded metal piece comprising opposed walls secured to the wood port-ion of the brush, together with a blade or knife pivoted between the walls of the folded metal strip, said blade being provided with means, such as a roll on the rear edge of the blade, so that its end may engage a notch of one of the sides or walls of the folded metal strip, in order to limit the blade in its open position.

A still further purpose is the provision of a roll on the rear edge of the blade, between which and the blade the edge of the notch of one wall of the holderfor said blade engages, for the purpose of limiting the blade in its open position, and thereby acting to relieve the lateral strain upon the pivot of the blade.

It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitat-ive and that while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modifications of Serial No. 541,556.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Figure 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the pivotal connection between the blade and the opposite sides of the metal strip, between which the blade ispivoted, showing theroll which cooperates with the notch in one wall of the metal holder for the blade;

Figure 5 is a cross sectional view on line -5-5 of Figure 4.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the handle of a brush, whether it be a scrub 7 folded strip of metal 2. This strip of metal is folded upon itself as at 3, and between the plies of the folded piece, adjacent the bight 7 thereof is a metal filler 4. Passing through the plies of the metal strip and through the filler, and secured in the wood portion or handle of the brush are screws 5, which secure the folded metal strip to the handle. Pivoted between the sides of the folded metal strip as at 6 is a knife or blade 7. This blade or knife may be any suitable shape, or proportions, preferably short and broad as illustrated, and is provided with sharp scraping edges 8 and 9, for the purpose of removing dirt and other foreign matter from a surface which is to be scrubbed, painted, papered or otherwise covered.

The rear edge of the blade or knife has an extension 10, which is rolled upon itself, and projects laterally fromthe blade. This roll may be any suitable length, preferably as shown, and where one end of the wall of the roll projects or turns toward the body of the blade, the edge 11 of a notch 12 of one of the sides of the metal strip engages. One edge of the notch is, curved as shown at 13, constituta cam, over wh ch the edge portion 01 one end of roll operat s, so that one edge of the end of the roll may engage the shoulder 14 of the notch, thereby limiting the blade or knife in its open position. roni the foregoing it will be seen that there has been devised a simple, ei'licient and practical scraper or knife to be used in connection with brushes of the various characters herein named, for the purpose oi. ettectively ren'ioving the dirt or other foreign matter from a surface which is to be painted, papered or otherwise covered.

The pivoted end of the blade 7 is pro vided with a depression 15, and one of the sides of the piece or strip of metal '2 is also provided with a depression 16. This depression 16 causes a bulge to form on the inner face or the side of said strip of metal, adapted to engage the depression 15 When the blade or knife is open, thereby assisting materially in holding the knife in an open position.

It will be noted that since the roll or er:- tension 10, where it engages the edges 11 and 13, is more or less resilient, and since this resilient portion bears upon one side of the sheet metal strip, the bulge caused by the depression 16 will engage the depression 15, assisting materially in holding the blade in an open position, and securely latched in such position. In fact the roll or extension the 10 where it engages the notch 12 has an action oi bearing down upon one side of the sheet metal strip or strap, and acts to draw the two pieces together, to insure holding the bulge in engagement with said extension.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is 1. in a scraper attachment, a folded strip of metal adapted to be mounted on a body, means for spacing the plies of the strip, a scraping blade pivoted between the plies, one end of one of the plies having a notch, and a roll extending longitudinally along the back edge of the blade and having a yield.- able portion to engage the shouldered end of the notch to limit the blade in. its open position.

2. The combination with a body, of a metal strip folded upon itself and secured to said body, the end of one ply of the metal strip having a notch provided with a shoul der, blade pivoted between the plies of said metal. strip, said. notch. having a cam edge, and a roll carried by the rear edge of the blade and having a yieldable portion to cooperate with the cam edge when opening the blade, whereby the end of said yieldable portion of the roll may contact with the notch and limit the blade in its open position.

The combination of a scraper adapted to be mounted on a body, comprising a holder to be secured to said body, said holder comprising opposite plies, the edge of one end of one ply having a notch, a blade pivoted between the plies of said holder and having a roll at one edge provided with a spring extension, adapted to cam over one edge of said notch, whereby it may engage the shoulder of the notch to limit the blade in its open position.
