Application filed September 13, 1923. Serial No. 662,420.
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. STEIN, a citizen of the United States residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Brushes and Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to-a combined brush and scraper that is particularly designed for use in cleaning the surfaces of butchers bloc-ks, meat cutting tables and the like and the principal objects of my invention are to provide a relatively simple, strong, durable and compact combination tool that includes a pair of scraping blades and a brush, said parts being combined with and mounted upon a simple and convenient frame or holder; further to construct the holder so that the scraping blades are firmly retained in oppositely disposed positions for use, thereby forming, in effect a duplex scraper, and further to-provide a .combina tion tool of the character referred to that may be readily combined with a large brush having heavy metal bristles.
A further object of my invention is to mount the brush upon the frame or handle so that it may be readily turned from a position of use inwardly into an out-of-the way position while not in use.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, my inventionconsist-s in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts that will be l'rereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings in which Fig. 1' is a front elevational view of a combination brush and scraper of my im proved construction.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view of the device.
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of a modified form of the device.
at of Fig. 7.
Fig. 9 is a rear elevational view of the modification illustrated in Fig. 7.
Fig. 10 is a plan view of my combination brush and scraper applied to the back of a brush having steel bristles.
Fig. 11 is a sectional view taken on the line 11-11 of Fig. 10.
Fig. 12 is an enlarged section taken on the line 1212 of Fig. 10.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings and particularly to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 10 designates a bristle carrying brush back that is pivotally mounted on screw eyes that pass through ears 12 and the latter being bent outwardly at right angles from the end portions of a frame or holder for a pair of scraping blades.
This frame or holder is preferably constructed from sheet metal that is bent to form three parallel sections 13, 14 and 15. the same being spaced slight distances apartso as to form two narrow pockets, one open at the top or one side of the holder and the other open at the bottom or other side of said holder.
Removably arranged in the pocket between the plates 13 and 14: is a scraping blade or, plate 16 of steelv and removably arranged in the pocket between the plates 14 and 15 is a scraping blade or plate 17. These scraping blades project substantial distances beyond the edges of the holder in which they are seated.
Stamped from the end portions of plate 15 are ears 19 that are spaced apart, a distance equal to the width of plate 17 and thus the latter, when removed from its pocket, may be given a quarter turn and arranged on the exterior of the holder against plate 15, with the edges of said plate 17 engaged beneath the ears 19 and consequently increasing the length of the scraping blade from the lower edge of the holder to the active or scraping edge of said blade. (See dotted lines Fig.
When not in use, the brush may be turned over onto holder or from the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2, to the position shown in dotted lines.
The brush back is preferably square in lit cross section and to permit the same to turn as just described, the apertures in ears '12 through which the screw eyes pass are elongated as illustrated in Fig. 12.
I11 the modifiedconstruction illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the sheet metal forming the frame or holder is bent so that the plate 13 is relatively narrow and the ends thereof and corresponding portions of the intermediate plate 1 L are rebent to form ears 20 that overlie the scraping blade 1'? that is positioned between plates 14t and 15.
Formed on the ends of plate 14 just above the ears 20 are perforated cars 21 that provide means for attaching the brush and blade holder to the back of a steel bristle brush.
Formed on the upper corners of plates 14 and 15 are rebent cars 22 that engage over the ends of the scraping blade that is positioned between plates 13 and I l In the modified structure illustrated in Figs 7, 8 and 9, the frame or holder is bent to hold two scraping blades and in order lengthwise of the holder, small ears are punched from the lower portion of the intermediate plate 14: and said ears engage over the edges of the scraping blade when the same is arranged as illustrated in Fig. 9.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 10, 11 and 12, the ends of plates 1& and 15 of the holder are provided with perforated ears 2% in order that the brush and scraping blade holder may be secured to the back 25- of a steel bristle brush.
In this construction, small cars 26 are pressed from the intermediate plate of the holder and which ears engage over the side edges of the blade that overlies said intermediate plate.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a relatively simple, practical and compact holder for apair of oppositely disposed scraping blades and a brush, thereby providing in effect a device that may be readily handled and effectively used in cleaning the surfaces of butchers blocks, meat cutting tables and the like.
Further, the holder is formed so as to firmly retain the scraping blades in proper positions for use and the brush is mounted on the holder so that it may be readily swung into and out of position for use. 7
It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved combination brush and scraper may be madeand substituted for those herein described without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a combination brush and scraper, a holder bent to form a pair of pockets adapted to receive a pair of oppositely arranged scraping blades and ears projecting from said holder near one edge thereof which ears are adapted to serve as points of attachment for a brush back.
2. In a combination brush and scraper, a holder formed of sheet metal to form three platesthat are spaced apart to form a pair of-oppositely' arranged pockets that are adapted to receive a pair of scraping blades and ears projecting from the ends of said holder, which ears are-adapted to serve as points of attachment for a brush back. 7
3. In a combination brush and scraper, a holder formed of sheet metal bent to form three plates that are spaced apart to form a pair of oppositely arranged pockets that are adapted to receive a pair of scraping blades, brush back receiving ears projecting from one side of said holder, and a pair of blade engaging ears stamped from one of said plates.
4:. In a combination brush and scraper,a holder formed of sheet metal bent to form three plates that are spaced apart to form a pair of oppositely arranged pockets that are adapted to receive a pair of scraping blades, brush back receiving ears projectingfrom one side of said holder and perforated ears projecting from the ends of one side of said plates. y
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GEORGE w. srnnv.
